Christie Sides, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith talk with reporters Sunday afternoon following the Indiana Fever road win over the Phoenix Mercury, 88-82.
They trailed 14-2 after the first four minutes of the game and went into halftime trailing by 11. But then they outscored the Mercury 29-15 in the 3rd quarter and got several late stops to complete the comeback.
Caitlin Clark was one rebound short from becoming the first WNBA rookie (and Fever player ever) to record a triple double: 15 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists. Boston had 17 points and 8 rebounds, Mitchell scored 16 (all in the second half) and Smith added 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Clark did not talk postgame because she felt ill throughout the entire game. But here's what she said before the game • Christie Sides, Caitli...
This was the Fever's fourth straight road game; the final game is on Tuesday in Las Vegas.
0:00 Christie Sides
05:29 Kelsey Mitchell
10:37 Aliyah Boston
15:20 NaLyssa Smith

17:30 Do you understand basketball? She was taken out for defensive purposes. I love CC. But I don't let my love for her blind me to her weaknesses. She is a poor defender. There's a reason why opposing teams isolate her on the offensive end. In this game, the player she was guarding kept blowing by her too easily and compromising the defense. She will improve. But in a close game at the end, when they have a lead, she needs to come out for a better defender. Anyway, what's more important, her getting a triple double or getting a win?

Never watched WNBA before Catlin Clark. I'm loving this team. Young, talented, and lots to learn. They were thrown into the fire at the beginning of the season, and it made them a real team. they are learning every game. Regardless of the seasons results, they have talent that is very young. I especially love Alyah Boston. A 2nd year and becoming a quite leader how just does it by example. Today's game vs. Pheonix was a real test, and they came back and won it. Very exciting.

Bigs really showed up in this game. Lyssa killed it on the boards, AB was AB. Temi in the lineup gives the Fever that good 3rd big who can play 4 or 5, and offers that mobility and footwork. KM hit big shots, CC distributed like she was Caitlin Clark. Great comeback, important road win.

It made zero sense to have Clark on the bench in the last couple of minutes. It's as if Christie Sides is way too concerned with Caitlin getting all of the credit and being the only narrative of the game. It's not even necessarily about the triple double. Clark had played the entire game (every second) up until that point and was the obvious MVP and difference maker. Why not let her play the whole game? The reason, I believe, is because Sides doesn't want the narrative to be that the Fever needed Clark to play every minute in order to win. She is hyper concerned about things like that, especially as it relates to the egos of some players. Caitlin Clark played her tail off and deserved to finish out that game on the court. Instead, this will now fuel a narrative that she needs to be subbed out for defensive purposes in crucial situations

Clark led them back from 15 down, and as they say, the best defence is a good offence, PS they can not score when you have the ball, and when will they stop dropping passes. Sides pulled her as a defensive move, by the way, Clark had 9 Rebounds 2nd best on the night, and N Smith had 12 rebounds - PS Do not dump your best defensive player But what really must have hurt Diana Taurasi the most was the fact that Clark walked out to a standing ovation - having your house do that is the worst way to eat crow.
