Stam is little confused with the Indy movie timeline...Temple of Doom = 1935, Raiders of the Lost Ark = 1936, Last Crusade = 1938.

I wish Lucas and Spielberg would do darker movies again. Doom was One of my favorite movies growing up in the 80s.

One thing that a lot of people miss, about this film, is that, like Raiders, it is a greatest hits of ideas from other films. The opening segments have some gags that were originally intended for Raiders, but not used, like the raft ride and the hiding behind the giant gong. The musical number invokes Berkley, but the pilotless airplane is a bit of an homage to Lost Horizon. The Thugee elements are an homage to the film version of Gunga Din and there are more Republic stunt scenes, such as the spiked room moving to crush them (also referenced in Star Wars) and the water bursting out the side of the mountain.

Not only is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is my all time favorite of the Indiana Jones movies. It’s also my all time favorite Steven Spielberg movie !!!

Temple of Doom is my favorite of the 3 Indy sequels. I like that Indy is more of a mercenary, like Bond, who inspired the character in the first place. And I like that they showed him as a tuxedo-clad playboy, instead of just going for the tweed professor again. Steven and George later said they were disappointed with Temple of Doom, but it adds the most breadth to the character without spoiling his mystery. Then they did Last Crusade and completely destroyed the enigma, while making a slapstick comedy that doesn't fit with the previous two films. Holy Grail... pffft!

While Willie is not my favorite of the Indiana Jones love interests, I actually appreciate her character quite a bit. She is NOT "adventure girl" and clearly demonstrates this throughout the entire movie. She's a coward, she can't do anything to really help out much, and she's totally out of her element. And that's great because she's a friggin' singer, dancer, and entertainer stuck in the middle of a jungle!! Bugs and psychopathic cultists aren't going to be interested in her singing and dancing, so she can't employ her only skills that way, and she's NOT a badass fighter or explorer! I think that's great, and it makes her different from the other two love interests. I'm a morbidly obese table top roleplaying game dude...drop me in the middle of a cultist infested jungle and I'd probably be just as useless, maybe even more so! Temple of Doom shows what happens when a normal person gets dropped into one of these over the top action adventures!

In my head cannon, Willie left Indy after she found out he hooked up with Mata Hari. One eyed Willy's treasure was the one that got away for Indy, cause he wasn't a goonie. Also Short Round is Data's Grandfather, who moved to Maine after he found out that Indy had a son that happened to be Shia Lebuf. Also he thought Indy had finally lost it after the whole nuclear fridge, and alien talk.

George Lucas' films are always 'personal projects'. Pissed off with the amount of money he had to pay for Lucasfilm, no doubt, the opening scrawl of Phantom Menace starts with 'The taxation of Federation routes is in doubt' or something like that. Very inspirational.

All these years, and I never knew Temple was a prequel,

i just noticed that the club in the opening is called "Club Obi Wan". That's so cool!

The irony is that the PG-13 rating had the reverse effect. The PG rating was being pushed in the early 80's with movies like Beastmaster including a topless female scene. PG-13 was supposed to cover that. However, in the interim, the MPAA has become more strict and the marketing departments of the distributors have become almost as scared of the G rating as they are of NC-17. A PG movie today would have been G rated in the 80's and a PG-13 is the new PG. As a result, we're once again in a place where there's nothing between it and an R rating.

I went and saw it as a boy and loved it. It didn’t seem too dark at all. It was an exciting adventure. Blockbusters at the time often had scary or gruesome bits (eg. Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Raiders, Young Sherlock Holmes...) and this didn’t seem any different.

If you were very young when the first Indy flick came out it would be difficult to have a proper experience or recollection of it However if you were a wee bit older and LOVED Harrison Ford for this prequel/sequel then you would have been peak excited to see it in the cinema with your Mum and Dad You also would have thought Kate Capshaw was stunning and have been totally grossed out by the darker elements of the film Even now the opening sequence with the poison totally reminds me of the first time time I saw the film as a young un' Short Round was brilliant and really connected with the kids who saw the film on its release

Short Round is a cool sidekick, it's got another great score by John Williams and er... that's about the only things I really liked about this film. Rewatched it ~20 years ago and was bitterly disappointed. Thankfully Last Crusade held up well.

Strangely Temple is my favorite, and I think it's because of the darkness of it. It really had a feeling of trepidation. The humor in it is nicely balanced. Everybody craps on Willie but we all have to remember she's just a show girl who's never been an adventure and the reality is most of us would probably react the same as her. The only part that I had a problem with as a child was the inflatable raft escaping the plane, of course that becomes possible after nuking the fridge. While I concede that raiders of the Lost is absolutely the best of all of them and absolutely the best adventure film of all time, there is something about Temple of Doom that I like. tend to watch that won the most. Last crusade which is most people's favorite was good and it tried to recapture raiders but at eighteen years old when I saw it in the theater twice, I just felt that it was trying too hard to make me laugh to the point where I didn't feel any kind of excitement on the adventure parts or the action scenes. Like I said the comedy and last crusade just seemed way too contrived. As far as Kingdom of the Crystal skull, if you cut out the groundhog's, if you cut out nuking the fridge, if you cut out the Tarzan swing and the monkeys that somehow know who the good guys are, I accept it as a good indie adventure But whenever I feel like watching a Indiana Jones somehow I always go back to Temple of Doom. Part of that could be that I've just seen raiders too many times. I can watch the whole thing in my head I love Temple and it is actually my favorite even though I recognize raiders is technically the best

Why did Mola Ram stare at the sacrifice's chest for a few seconds after he held his hand over it? 4. Why was Mola Ram wriggling his hand when it was going into the sacrifice's chest? In some ways this is the best Indy film. Not for the subject matter. I mean some magic Hindu rocks aren't as significant to us as an ancient Biblical artifact. But in terms of adventure, spontaneous action and humour, this is the best of the 4. Oh and I forgot to mention FUN, maybe not joy but fun! In this movie nothing is planned. They just fall into a situation and it rolls from there, and I like that about this film. That and we get a break from Nazi henchmen. Plus in this movie, Harrison Ford is at his most manliest, which is a bonus since he's an action hero.

It's grown on me over the years.But I think Last Crusade is the better movie.I remember seeing TOD at the State Theatre in Sydney. They had the entire cinema decked out like the Caverns where the Thuggee Temple was including cobwebs everywhere. Talk about putting you in the picture 📸

This is a great great film and better than the rehash of raiders …aka holy grails

This one is not as bad as many think. They were at least trying something different. New setting in India, new villains in the Thugges. Willie scott might have been annoying, but she was realistic. And it shows that other cultures have legends, magic and history. It is very scary and Mola ram is an awesome villain. At least it is original, unlike the last crusade which was a slapstick rehash of Raiders, that is for some reason forgiven for all its faults, unlike this ne, which is the second best in the franchise.

This film is structured differently than any other Indy film. It builds to climax after climax after climax. Rather than the other films that space out the action between long scenes of calm. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with why it is my favourite Indy film. I'll say that I grew up on the UK version, which was heavily edited to remove violence and gore. I first saw the full version when I first went to America and imagine that, had I seen that when I was a kid, I might well have been disturbed by it - growing up in the age of the 9 pm watershed. Which Indy film do I most enjoy re-watching? Temple of Doom, then Raiders, then Last Crusade, and I don't enjoy re-watching Crystal Skull. I can scarcely believe you rated it higher than Temple of Doom.

I had never realized that literally NONE of the main characters really have a pleasant time in this. Shows how a cloud over the writer's mind is fantastic at torturing their characters. Indy really was more of an ass here, but a somewhat younger Doctor Jones really does fit well with that demeanor. That said, Willie really was the most incredibly out-of-her-element character, possibly in the entire trilogy. Marion had a good gauge of what she was getting into with Indy and Elsa was... a Nazi femme fatale. Both of the latter were adroit in their adventures, although still refined enough to be very uncomfortable in portions. Thank you for watching!

I have never seen a film hit the ground running like this but unfortunately, it slows to crawl until we get to that awesome temple. Overall, this is an Indy film that doesn't quite measure up to it's predecessor but it's a damn good time at the movies. Also, this was last time Indy was a flawed character. From Last Crusade onward, he basically became a rugged, Mr. America, good natured everyman. Ugh. Lucas did as much to Han Solo after The Empire Strikes Back.

I think you were brutally tough on this film, I think it's a fantastic Saturday morning serial type romp.

I always find it weird how people think temple is "dark". Other than maybe a minute or two in the middle section it's probably the zaniest, cartooniest and most "kiddy" movie in the series to me.

I think you capture it quite well. I can watch Raiders over and over but this not so much..

It's not that Indy is a dick, it's that since this movie is a prequel, they are literally showing us when and how Indy "became a hero". When he says the "fortune and glory" line, it's not in jest, he means it. He was a profits driven opportunist. He is slowly becoming "the Indy" we already knew, and the process began with the slave children and he "emerged complete" when he broke the black sleep. More than one "spell was broken", the 2nd being the spell of selfish pursuits. And, btw, the "joyless-ness" you pick up on is partly emanating from his unfinished character. When you realize this, you'll see the whole movie entirely different. I just think that Lucas/Spielberg really made this aspect just a tad too subtle.

Willie isn't Rey Skywalker with all the super powers in the first movie, Luke still wasn't even a jedi until the third part of the trilogy. If Willie was Rey then Mola Ram would be toast

Nothing anyone can say will convince me this is NOT the best Indiana Jones movie. The other three get bogged down in Nazi or Commie melodrama... But this is just straight adventure from page 1 and it doesn't stop to let you take a breath.

Just think if George Lucas had been happier when he came up with this film

Temple of Doom is so much better than the Abomination of Crystal Skull. The Overthetop Cartoony acting of the entire cast, actually swinging with CGI Monkeys, and don't forget CGI Ants!! ToD was the least of the 3, but don't put it below Crystal Skull.

Concur with your ranking. While both this and KCS are highly flawed, at least the latter is more enjoyable to watch.

What bothered me at the time with this movie was the violent intent between children. A fair amount of this (excepting Willie) I got into, but that kid trying to stick another kid stuff was off putting.

Film has moments, but fuck me, it’s all over the place in tone. I never hated Short Round, or Mola Ram, even Willie Scott since Capshaw was only doing what was asked of her. But I never connected to them or the story the way I did with the other two. I’d say it has the exact same problems as the Star Wars prequels. Inconsistent tone, mean spirited humour (as opposed to dark humour, which still requires empathy) and some dumbass stereotypes that, while not maliciously racist, are still kinda racist. I will say tho that Harrison is prime Harrison in this, and it still feels part of the series more than Crystal Skull.

So I hear they're making another Indiana Jones movie........When Indy was giving the 'I'm too old for this shit' speech in flippin Raiders, in 1980! \🙄/ I do sincerely hope it's good though, I still think with some reworking they coulda (mostly) rescued 'Crystal Skull' (....At the least, getting rid of those god-awful CGI monkies! A little known fact that is most assuredly not true; Kate Capshaw lodged a formal Complaint with the Producers, for the portrayal of her character as always complaining. When her complaint was ignored, she complained to Steven Spielberg. Mr Spielberg changed his name and moved to Somalia. And so Kate complained to George Lucas. George made a clone of Steven, modified to love complaints. Kate and the Clone married 2 days later...

“Willie doesn’t endear herself to anyone......Kate Capshaw has only one fan.” Rinse. Repeat. Yawn, and “boohoo”. The main problem with ToD is the almost non existent plotting. It’s an extended pre title sequence and then a dinner scene a torture scene and then an extended chase. With the bare minimum of connective tissue. If it didn’t have a precocious little twerp and an annoying glamour girl, not to mention buckets of “eeeeew” the movie would have been trite as hell. I can’t argue with matters of taste surrounding aspects of the movie but many of those elements are what actually make it worth rewatching. It’s not as good as Last Crusade or Raiders. But it’s at least as good as Crystal Skull. A movie with arguably too much plot.

It wasn't a bad film, but it was the worst of the 3 movies! There were only 3 Indiana Jones films and the last one has the Holy Grail, and i am unanimous about that!
