Without taking anything away from Elizabeth Shue, it's a shame that Claudia Wells didn't continue acting. She was delightful and played the thankless 'Girlfriend' role in a warmer way.

One of the greatest trilogies of all time.

What I remember noticing about the reaction to Part 2 was that many critics were completely confused by the time-travel story, even though the movie literally stops so Doc Brown can draw us a diagram midway through. Lots of reviews didn't get that the middle part was set in an altered 1985. They were greatly relieved that the story of Part 3 was so much simpler. It feels to me like these science-fiction ideas are much more mainstream now, to the point that a movie like Avengers: Endgame can do a really convoluted time-travel plot and expect that the audience will follow it well enough to enjoy it without patient explanation of everything. Just giving Doc Brown the romance plot in Part 3 was delightful.

When these came out in the theater, I was right there. The cast and the time travel theme is what brought me, but all the film makers skills is what keeps me coming back. I watch these Back to back at least once a year.

What I like about the trilogy is that while Marty is the main character, none of the films are about him. Part 1 is the tale of George McFly; part 2 is Biff, and part 3 is Doc Brown.

As a kid, Part 2 was my fave, but the 1st edged it out as I got older. But I still think it’s one of the best sequels ever. Weird to me that it got such a mixed response initially. 3 was one I was ambivalent on for ages but I grew to like it in time. I think it works as a love letter to Westerns and to Back to the Future itself. Making Doc Brown the lead was a wise choice. It just falls short in the details that made the first 2 greater. Good finale tho.

Fabulously conceived and executed review. "Ongoing 80's nostalgia that just won't go away!". So funny because it's so irritatingly true. Sadly, it says more about the creative bankruptcy of far too much current creative output than it does about that decade. Like a rear view mirror, it's useful in some instances but not for plotting a course forwards.

When I first saw 2 I through the Jaws 19 gag was absurdly hilarious. With an industry centred on lazy movie sequels, re-boots and franchises. I don't think it's so funny any more.

The envelope gag was perfect. You know this already, though.

Pt2 still remains my favourite of the trilogy

I have never seen any film associated with the "Back to the Future" franchise. That's why I'm watching your reviews of them, Mr. Fine.

Part 1: superbly-made, self-contained film which stands utterly on its own merits. Teases a follow-up which never needed to happen. Part 2: clever, yet confusing. The "New Coke" of the BttF series. Taken in the context of the whole trilogy, it superbly bridges the first and third film, creating links that are unforeseeable at the time, but patently obvious in retrospect. Part 3: far more a sequel to part 2 than the finale to part 1. The concepts of part 1, redefined and refined in part 2, are drawn upon to create conflicts appropriate to part 3. The genius is that every path seeded in part two is just as valid as any set in motion in part one. All paths are equally plausible from the perspective of part three. That's not to say that the results of part three are inevitable from the events of parts one & two, just that they are plausible when looking back.

Thanks for this vid! I love these movies truly a fun time. I only remember seeing Parts II and III in the theater. Part I was on Showtime and that was the first time I saw that one on the old cablebox. This vid spurned me to re-watch the what if Part IV from Channel Awesome's "Fanscription" series. It is worth a watch and is an interesting story.

The 1st is a classic, but as a western fan, the 3rd is one I stop and watch everytime I come across it.

Part 3 is under-appreciated

This movie came out when I was 13 and I loved it. I want to show it to my 13 year-old daughter, but I also don't want to burden her with 80's nostalgia. So I won't, and I feel sad about it.

Robert Zemeicks never wanted to go too the future. Treatment for BTTF part 2 was set in 1968

I think when I've watched these I've always felt: 1 - great saturday night film : 2 - great saturday night, but much later, and possibly watching while drunk film : 3 - not a bad sunday afternoon recovering from whatever happened last night film. With you on the "having to watch all the things, in order" thing. A friend said the other month "Just started watching The Expanse, up to second season now, it's great" - and I asked "Ooh, which episode are you up to". Later that day I thought I'd watch that episode just so I could engage in "Did you like the bit with X?" type conversations next time I texted. Anyway, suffice to say, I watched about 5 minutes of Episode 2.2 or whatever they were up to, and _was forced_ into going "nope, gotta start at 1.1" and two days later I'd binged all 5 seasons _again_ :)

How did you know I watched it twice? :) My brother and myself went to see it twice, we enjoyed it so much we went back the next day for another viewing. I also watched it when it got re-released. Must have been in 2010, the 25th anniversary.

I found, in books series at least, starting in the middle, watching to the end, then reading the first one, brings interesting and different views on a series.

BTTF 1 and 3 are bookends to ... a whole library.

It's the middle of a trilogy, the Empire installment. It's not too dark. It's A Wonderful Life got dark too which this film uses as a reference for the nightmare alternate Biff future. The first third of the movie that takes place in the then future of 2015 is really the weakest part of the film, but the plot truly kicks in during it's middle section when they go Darkside to the future, and then becomes utterly sublime in it's last act when it goes into the first film and reaches a meta sci-fi Nirvana of creativity and greatness. Just the audacity of the idea is balls, but the fact they went for it and pulled it off is what makes Gale and Zemeckis true Hollywood legends. The third wild west finale to the series is a great flip side of tone and pace to the, going moch 2, full thermal nuclear, hair on fire breakneck sound barrier breaking speed of the second movie to this sweet, meditative, nuanced almost bottle episode type feel to the proceedings where we actually get to hang out and really get to know Doc and Marty which is all the more appreciated as this is their swan song to the saga before things go breakneck speed of light again in the third act. But, who has their picture stop to become a contemplative character driven piece on man's existential crisis with self and his role in the universe? In a summer tent pole blockbuster? Almost unheard of. Maybe the farm sequence in Avengers II: Age of Ultron. And that's it. I give this trilogy all the credit in the world. Even the original Star Wars trilogy dropped the ball in bringing it home strong for it's final film Return of the Jedi with a decidedly drop in execution, Ewoks and overall quality. A New Hope and Empire are 10plus masterpieces of perfect execution in all facets of filmmaking excellence. Jedi is a flawed finale, a 6 and a half to 7 to wrap up it's original legacy run. Back to the Future, by contrast, had a perfect first film, ambitious, sprawling second film of balls to the wall audaciousness that has some production flaws in the first third (the effects of a lot of the 2015 future were dated on arrival and just gotten worse in three decades.) and the Jennifer being shuffled around like a victim of human trafficking is such a terrible first draft placeholder idea that never got rewritten to give Jennifer agency and some motivation, time travel paradox central flaw of once old Biff takes the Deloreon and changes history, he couldn't return the Deloreon back to the original 1985 timeline he left for Marty and Doc to get back; he could only go forward into the timeline he now altered which is the one Marty and Doc visit in the middle of the movie. Once Biff grand theft auto'd the time machine to give himself the almanac in 1955, Doc and Marty as we knew them were screwed and these versions would sieze to exist. That stupid flying train at the end of three. With wild west tech. Did they fight a big mechanical spider while there too? Come on. All that said, they still manage to bring it home strong in the third and final movie with the heartwarming farewell to one another with Doc's now huge family. It's flawed but still perfect in it's own internal universe's logic. It's magical. The first film is a 10plus, Two is a 9 which is lower at the end of the first act like a 5, but act two and three are so strong it almost erases the first act to be a 10, and then the third film is a 10. It's perfect in it's execution of goals and wrapping up the entire three movie saga with insanely well crafted, interlocking screenplays that all are practically airtight and iron clad in set up and payoffs on every thematic, character, plot levels and all the other needed cinematic moving parts. This is heavy.

Like the original Star Wars trilogy, and the Dark Knight trilogy, the 2nd film of the Back to the Future trilogy was easily the best of the trio.

I no longer watch Back to the Future Parts II and III because 2015 is done now, but I certainly wouldn’t want to forget those movies either because if it hadn’t been for them, I wouldn’t have thought to turn a foreshadowed date into a party or decided that the original Back to the Future would be my favorite movie after that party!

The best and most perfect review ….. I saw part 3 in the States, in the UK I had a video shop and played BTTF every single day….. along with ‘the search for Spock’ and ‘the voyage home’.

Just one note, the idea to gamble on future sports events was mentioned first by Doc Brown in the first movie, right before the terrorists show up.

First one is A++, part 2 is an easy A and part 3 a solid A-, all excellent and able to be re-watched easily (I even have the OSTs for all 3, Lol)

I didn't much like Part II when I first saw it, but it has become my favorite. III is ok.

I love pt2 with its "all over the place" feel to the story & especially the alternate timeline. When I first watched it as a kid, I used to dream about the possibility of time travel & how good it would actually be to travel forwards in time, pick up my very own almanac & put bets on sport.

In contrast to The Matrix, Indiana Jones, and quite a few other trilogies, this one arguably improves with each following entry (thus, Part III is best, and the 1985 film, made while MJ Fox was concurrently starring in Family Ties, is the least best). the reason part 2 felt like it dragged on was because it didn't have a time clock unlike parts 1 & part 2 the part 1 lighting strike at 10:04pm & the part 3 8am train were basically set in stone so it became a marathon to get to the finish line

Urban Dictionary definition of SEQUELITIS: The condition that many sequels to successful films suffer from: re-hashing of plot points, shoving the best parts of the original back in your face until you almost hate it, ETC, all while trying to make the movie "bigger and better" than the original through the addition of an over-abundance of special effects, or new characters that you just dont care about (or, on some occasions, omitting major characters that people DID care about). Sequelitis can make one of 2 things happen: the third film will back off and be much better than the second, or part 2 will have been so awful that a 3rd never even gets made.

I've never seen Back To The Future I or II, but I've seen most of III because it was at a theatre I was working at. Call me ignorant but I just never "got" them.

BTTF dates relate to me alot. In the dark alternate future Biff created, on the gravestone of George McFly its said he died March 15, 1973. March 15 is my birthday. Now the date they do in the future October 21, 2015. It wasnt until the news stations make big deal of it on that date in our reality that I ever realized their movie date (October 21) is my wife and I wedding anniversary (we were married October 21, 2000). The BTTF date October 21, 2015 would be our 15th wedding anniversary.,

I don't mean to be funny, but if they remade/rebooted/sequelised Back To The Future in my lifetime I would be very pissed. Probably start a whole revolt against 'New Hollywood'. Even if Zemeckis decided to make a Marty vs Tannen recut (that was a 'Sly' joke teehee) I wouldn't be interested.

2 was the first I saw all the way through, so was for years my favourite, but now it's my least favourite by a long stretch. 1 and 3 are nice little character pieces with a tiny bit of time-travel action stuff at the beginning and end. Whereas 2 is just a complete odd-one-out with so much sci-fi, action and time-travel crammed in, that until I got to see the others I just assumed that it's what the whole trilogy was like.

My theory is that Marty's new more affluent life, created when George knocked out Biff, resulted in him growing up into a bit of a cock. First thing he's interested to know when he gets to the future is if he's a rich rock star. "I am rich though?". His inability to keep his cool when called a coward and his decision to buy the Almanac are the repercussions for him altering the timeline.

Older Biff couldn't Go back in time in the second film because the time machine wasn't refuled, unless he he did it off camera which we don't see in the film and by the way how come doc didn't notice The top part of buff's cane as he got in the car and noticed that something loose was his feet? LoL there are alot of mistakes in all 3 films

You struck a chord with this review. Stating how the trilogy has remained popular since it's release. Because the original production remained true to it's original vision. I imagine if this trilogy gets rebooted into oblivion, the series will be less well regarded. Kinda how I feel about most rebooted content today. *Cough*Matrixresurrections*cough*

I remember watching part 2 in my late teen and how disappointed I was....the first movie had been so great, soundtrack and all. Part 2 was complicated, aging make-up on the actors terrible....I hated it and the reason why I did not bother with part 3.

Couple theories . 1. there were 2 time machines in 1885, although the circuit boards for flying and time were fried on the dead machine , they could have harvested gas for the 1955 machine since the 1885 machine was only sitting for 8 months. 2. Doc must have been thrifty in the 1880s , ice service was available but he chose to make a vaccuum pump refrigerator the size of a house. 3.. gasoline was available in 1885 , but in an unrefined variant that may not have run a 1980s engine .. Easy. 2nd is the worst and the first is the best. But that is relatively speaking. Compared to most movies, the 2nd one is awesome on its own. It’s just compared to the BttF trilogy does it Paul in comparison

In a odd way, even though parts II and III were made back to back (slightly different style and a lit bit better than say Superman I and II), it would work if a TV network, non commercial, of course, were to show all three parts together, a small bit of editing and change the end titles to include Back in Time and Double Back, then the simple white on black background format would allow a mix, if timed right to not ruin the orchestra theme, in fact, they could slip that in between. The odd thing is, people would be wondering what happened to the first Jennifer unless they knew before viewing.

Great video as always S.F. I lived through every moment of the 1980's. The music was mostly awful, it was the era of the McSingle for most of the bands of the 1970's. The creativity in movies was replaced mostly by noise and violence. T.V. was either ra-ra about America or taking the piss out of it. I have no nostalgia for that time.

Part II I just found frantic, noisy and mechanical. I know Zemeckis and Gale were working under a very tight schedule when writing it, but it feels like a traditional bad sequel that lacks much of what made the first film engaging and memorable. Part III is an improvement, but definitely it was time to finish the series for good. I really, really, really disliked the continuing McFly past and future family in the sequels and (while Thomas Wilson always gave his best) Biff Tannen always being the villain. What was a cute and clever McFly family focused storyline in the first film, just felt repetitive and derivative the longer the series went on.

Part 2 is by far the best, it makes you want desperate to see part 3, and with a nagging desire to re watch part 1!!
