In your history classes you may have been taught that socialism was conceptualized by Karl Marx and later spread across the world in the 20th century. Additionally, we as Americans like to pride ourselves on the fundamentals of free trade, capitalism, and individualism serving as the backbone of our culture. Thus I find it quite ironic to discover in today's adventure that the first true socialist experiment was not in Russia or China or anywhere else one would think of it to blossom. Rather, one of the first settlements in which its inhabitants actively intended to practice socialist ideals, lies right here in America, in a small Indiana town known as New Harmony. We'll be getting the chance to dive deep into the history of the New Harmony colony, the story of its multiple iterations, why the settlement as it was no longer exists today, and the legacy it carries on behalf of American history. All that, and me getting lost within a labyrinth of shrubs.
