Both schools put on a show. I have marched for a corp style band in high school and for a black university show band. Both styles are unique and entertaining. Both of these lines threw it down and I would say it is a tie due to the different styles and showmanship.

"They're two drum lines that take two different approaches. So it's not really fair to pick a winner." I agree, well said! Case in point are the way that each group interprets their changes and rhythm combos within their perspective cadences.

Aren't drumline battles supposed to be one part precision + one part showmanship? Every band competition I've seen have been based on both. If that's the case, while IU, one of my alma maters, was clean, SCSU completed the mix much better because IU was almost no show. And I don't care about the corp versus show band comparison, there are some corp bands which incorporate show into their battles and some show bands exhibit corp extremely well. Just saying.

I'm the section leader at Savannah State University and I have to say out of all the HBCU conferences the MEAC has the best drumlines. I'm glad to see the trend of the HBCU drumline wanting to be more technical...it's a good movement. (I wish FAMU would get on board with it.) But yeah Bango Brothers, MDF$, ColdSteel, Sudden Impact, and Krush Groove are the lines to look for in the MEAC! NICE BATTLE.

Are people saying there's a "Style" difference simply because it's a black line vs a Majority white Line? Both lines played very melodic material. The make-up of the lines aside from the tenor drums (single) was the same. They both had choreography and visuals. Are they not both playing percussion instruments. Don't see much of a style difference here. Just two good lines sparring musically.
@janellesouvane13808 жыл бұрын

I know that it's any drumline's goal to play as clean as possible because that's one thing that makes watching, listening to, & playing in a drumline fun. What I mean is show bands are more visual than corp style bands so it's no argument that corps style groups tend to play their music cleaner from player to player than show style. Both groups are very good, but like I said, I don't really think it's fair to say either one is better. They're both very good for their different performance styles

MDFS should have been in this to. I think both lines were excellent, well played. I'm also a drummer and I was impressed. They should have a big drumline competition and everyone should be judge together on cleanliness and precision and showmanship no matter hbcu or Corp style. The competition should be HBCU AND all other college bands together and I think they should also do a mass drum session like they do at the Honda BOTB. Let's make it happen because that's one show I will not miss.

SCSU snares were a bit more clean, and I noticed some scrambled eggs in IU's snares a few times. It wasn't difficulty level either, as there were straight 16th notes. Bass drums were cleaner on IU's sided, but that may be down to the pure numbers as HBCU's tend to use toned basses and like 4 36" bass drums for impact. Overall, I would have to give it to SCSU.
