One of veteran cops commented that the cartel that did it was being merciful, and when Calderon asked "How is this merciful?" the veteran told him "They're letting the families have the bodies to mourn over."

The film is a masterpiece, shows a terrible truth and asks questions without pretending to know the answers. A relentlessly realistic thriller about the incredibly brutal drug war in Mexico.

SPOILER ALERT: Brolin's character is a CIA Special Operations Group leader and he can't legally operate on American soil without being attached to a task force headed by a non CIA asset (they used Blunt's F.B.I. character to circumvent that law by attaching her and keeping her in the dark about what is going on). The USA gov is morally reprehensible to some degree in this fictional movie because it's doing everything it can to put a specific entity back at the top of the drug chain by eliminating specific individuals (with the help of Del Toro's character - a former Colombian prosecutor/now CIA trained assassin). They are doing so, not to stop drug flow into the U.S. (they view that as a losing battle), but to reduce the violence that has erupted with the cartels competing against one another in the drug trade. In essence, the U.S. wants one cartel - not a dozen - and they are using the CIA to achieve that goal.

My wife is from El Paso which is practically across the border from Juarez. It’s a nice place to visit during the day time as long as you stay in certain touristy spots. But you definitely want to be back north of the border before sundown.

Other Villeneuve movies worth watching are his french-canadian movies. - "Incendies" (2010). A mother send her twin children on a search for a brother they never knew and a father they thought dead. (Adapted from the Stage Play by Wajdi Mouawad) - "Polytechnique" (2009). About the 1989 Montreal's École Polytechnique shooting. Should be watched in the original language (french), with english subtitles.

When watching this movie it helps to understand that Kate isn’t the main character Alejandro is. She is the antagonist who did everything that Alejandro and Matt said not to do. I had thought this would be another movie lead by a strong female lead. Nope it isn’t at all. Great way to subvert expectations.

There is a sequel to this 3 years later.

The sequel is pretty solid as well.

Fantastic, highly suspenseful movie with a haunting score and gorgeous cinematography.

Kate claimed that Matt used her as bait. He told her that she did it herself, and reminded her that he told her not to go into the bank. Kate is typical F.B.I. She won't follow orders. Then she blames the repercussions on the man whose orders she disobeyed. Her own boss told her that there was nothing illegal about what they were doing. She ignored him, too. Then, Kate broke the law. She re-entered the US at a point other than a Point of Entry, when she returned from Mexico through the tunnel. I believe that's a felony.
