For the longest time in American entertainment, The Simpson’s Apu was the only major Indian figure on television. Depicted primarily as a convenience store clerk, Apu has long been the center of criticism by the Indian-American community for his shallow representations of Indians and Indian culture. And after 30 years on air, the voice actor of Apu, Hank Azaria, recently announced that he will no longer be voicing the character going forward. But while the Indian-American stance is well circulated, are you curious as to how people in India feel about the Apu character? We hit the streets of Mumbai to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indian population.

The point of the Simpsons is to be offensive. It is meant to be politically incorrect. All characters are stereotypes.
@Ichigokeeki.

exactly, all characters are equally presented in a very sarcastic and exaggerated way. If it's Abu or Flanders or Homer, they all are portrayed in the same "offensive" way. Also it's a cartoon made by and for adults. I don't think theres one (grown) person on earth who honestly believes that real people have bright yellow skin.
@kdpak

The thing is, when an American roasts/stereotypes Americans, that's generally deemed acceptable. Still, many black Americans might get offended if a non-black American makes fun of them, and vice versa. Already the western world propagates a very negative image of developing Asian countries in general, so adding such offensively stereotypical humor layer to it is bound to not go down well with people who are at the receiving end; Indians, in this case. And it's not limited to Indians. I've seen several instances online of Americans or Europeans getting very offended when Asian people roast them. It's natural.

@@IndoManiac90 What makes you think Indians are more diverse than westerns, have you ever studied the history of the western world to just make that subjective opinion? And personally I've watched The Simpsons since I had common sense, and I've never thought that all of the people of one country are the same, that's not racism that's stupidity to think that way, and I've never heard anyone who watched that cartoon say: Oh all of Indian people are like that!

@@IndoManiac90 You're correct, but the thing is, that's a systemic problem with American media. For a LONG time, there hasn't been good Indian-American representation on TV. So Indian Americans are pointing the finger at Apu as being bad, because he's the #1 most well known Indian on TV, and he's a stereotype. I understand the logic, but I think it's unfair. Apu isn't a problem. The American media as a whole has problems.

You know, these guys do have a point. People who watch satire tend to believe that everything that happens on screen happens in real life. Take Monty Python for instance, they represent cheese shop owners in a very negative light by suggesting that they never have any cheese. They do a massive disservice by massively oversimplifying the job of a cheese shop owner. I would love it if there could be one show that really dives deep into every facet of being a cheese shop owner like placing cheese orders, filing taxes, cleaning the shop, paying bills, dealing with boring customers, waiting around all day. It is truly riveting stuff that is sure to garner the attention of the masses for its attention to detail and the thrilling nature of the job. Hopefully you guys understand that comedy is comedy. Anything you see done in a comedy show should not be taken seriously at face value because it most likely purposely misrepresents the subject matter for the sake of comedy. If you want a factual and true telling on something, go to school, read a book, speak to an expert, or watch a documentary

There are still adults, old people, many local language only people and working class, who are not so open like a city, middle class English taught teen towards western humor that shows sensitive topics that people are actually trying to curb. Like for example consider the show showing actual slave trading, homophobia and black person shown to be just a gang member who keeps stealing things, in general these would have a message type portrayal of situation that shows how wrong they are but they didn’t do that for these sensitive topics because of lack of knowledge. Plus one guy made a good point, this portrayal affects Indians in America a lot more with bullies and a standing history of racism.

It's a contrast thing. The more foreign something is to someone, the harder it becomes to distinguish between things. It works both ways too. @@abbyalphonse499 part of the problem is most Indians learn British English to begin with because of the country's history. This makes it even more difficult when speaking to Americans. Their pronunciation is an attempt to emulate a dialect Americans themselves have trouble understanding even though it's the same language. On top of this, the way Hindi and other Indian languages are structured, it lacks phonemes critical to English. Perfect example is the letter H. Most Indians will pronounce it like "hatch" when it's more like "eech". I've noticed they have trouble with G too. Then when you get to words that are both portmanteaus of Latin and Germanic languages, it breaks down completely.

I understand in current scenario with racism it’s tough for Asians ...but Apu was a much loved character among ppl who’s been watching Simpson since childhood...despite his stereotypical character. What millennial Indian Americans say about Apu is that for a long time he was the only reference point in American media for what Indians are like, so a lot of American perceptions about Indians were based this exaggerated caricature. I personally don't find Apu's character to be very offensive, but our opinions aren't relevant.

That's true! The Simpsons make fun of everyone and portray stereotypes from all countries! Apu was not portrayed in a bad light, but he, and this episode in particular, were heavily stereotyped. These stereotypes do not harm (white) Americans, whereas they do harm Indian people. While The Simpsons does make fun of Americans, they are showing it to a primarily (white) American audience, who know that it is a joke, and can understand that the stereotypes because they themselves are American. When these stereotypes are of an oppressed group, it gives (white) Americans an excuse to be racist and all-around bad people! Or at least, this is what I thought, but I never really watched The Simpsons and I don't live in America either.

I feel like the interview is a little unfair to Apu's character, considering he's a recurring side character who had a whole story arc and this is a pretty old episode (as in tough this was a major plot point for Apu, his story did not end here). His marriage is just one episode and there is a lot more to his character than just that. He's smart and well-educated, he's an entrepreneur who loves his job, he's charming and romantic, he became a father (which stressed him out because after desperately trying for a baby they end up having 8), he taught Lisa you can't force your views on others (when she became vegetarian)... Some people in the comment section need to stop accent shaming Indians. An average Indian speaks about 3 regional languages(could be more). Accent is something that you cannot control when you grow up speaking so many languages. It's the mother tongue effect. So stop making fun of Indians if they speak English with a heavy accent. And yes... Apu's accent is definitely exaggerated. Only Indians could tell this. It may sound same to non-Indians. Also, it would be justified if you conduct this interview with the American Indians. The Simpsons isn't even popular in India. You can't judge a character by few clips.

Shaming ≠ making fun of I think many people genuinely enjoy Indian accent because it sounds funny and entertaining to them. It's different and recognizable. People can't shame or insult you if you don't care about what they think. While in normal social context that is a recipe for trouble, in this case the opinion of other people shouldn't really matter, true? The accent is part of you and other Indian people and it doesn't harm anyone. It's not up to Americans or any other nationality to decide if it's good or bad, so why should you feel ashamed or insulted if someone outside of India doesn't like it? It's unfair to expect other people to change the way they speak when there is nothing inherently wrong about it. ... However, just as I said, I think most English speakers actually enjoy the Indian accent. It just sounds characteristic and defies their expectations in relation to their native accent so people find it funny and people like to make fun of funny things. It's not the only accent that people poke fun of, not even close. I'm not sure if there is need to take it too seriously, because it doesn't negatively affect on how Indians are seen. Even in the Simpsons Abu is probably the sanest and most likable character.

I will say this. As a a Sri Lankan I was often mocked by my white peers at university with an Apu accent. I’m Punjabi Indian born in UK..but have been back to india a number of times throughout my life (I’m early 40s). Although India has modernised in some respects over the last 10-15 years…there are still arranged marriages..overwhelmingly! Young people have relationships outside of marriage of course..but it’s still quite hidden. There are exceptions of course. Attitudes towards women in Indian Society hasn’t radically changed..even in the big cities. A lot of it has to do with culture and lack of education overall. You have to remember the size of India in population..and although there are many educated people in India..there’s many that aren’t. I’m not sure how factual the literacy rate of over 70% of Indians is according to last census..as only 4.5% are educated to degree level. By the way I’ve met both educated, semi educated and illiterate Indians. I may not live there..but I believe I know enough to form the opinion I have.

To be fair I don't think Indians in India can have a full understanding of why Indian Americans might find Apu offensive. They don't have to deal with the people around them only having an idea of their culture from a cartoon that makes jokes about them. And obviously it'll even be different for Indians in America and whether they live in a diverse community or somewhere where they could be the only Indian person in the town.

First, it's refreshing and reassuring that a good number of the people interviewed sees this as simply cartoon humor. I mean, apart from maybe Marge Simpson and the baby Maggie, I don't think you'll find too many characters that qualify as upstanding role models to be emulated. The whole point of the show is to point out society's flaws, though usually in a fairly light-hearted way. After all, Apu is (or was) a beloved character.

Our history is political although other countries history is political but not like ours! A lot of real Indians in America were reclassified as African America or Black Americans for political purposes by the democrats! Indians are not pale we come in different shades of brown. Those so call Indians that are pale are descendants of khazar Turks an are not indigenous coming from the original authentic stock!

So I guess that's why they have a similar self burning humor. And I think that is beautiful. The Flames can't burn you if you ARE the Fire.
