The world trend against smoking is unknown in Indonesia where 60% of all men smoke and tobacco firms target small children. The Government avoids grappling with an industry widely seen as out of control.
Tobacco is a $6 billion industry in Indonesia but a means of livelihood is rapidly becoming a nation's addiction and children are not exempt. Children like Irwan are legally allowed to smoke as much as they like. He sees it as 'freedom' and bonding: "I can hang out with my friends and we can smoke together." Tobacco companies target young crowds and a law to ban advertising is stalled by opposition from the tobacco industry. There's a legacy of bribery and disbelief in the associated health risks. Harjo, a cigarette factory owner insists "the poisoning comes from...pollution" . Change may slowly come as a tobacco representative insists they want "clear regulations so that children can not access cigarettes" but until that day children like Irawan can smoke what they like.

When grow up around smoker, kids will start as can see smokers enjoy it. My parent both heavy smokers and me my brother always wanted to smoke growing up, started when 10, bro 11 and no regrets. Everyone in family smokes inside and great that partner heavy smoker too and will never quit and likes how everyone can tell we smoke and smell on us

@@leonardoarcher2318 3 to 4 packs ain't that unusual for heavy smoker. I smoked pack a day and did up to another pack in chain (2-3) hours when outside with friends. Problem is because that guy whines how unhealthy and addicting it is and doesn't do anything about it. It's his own weakness. Anyone can quit and noone has to start if they are properly educated.

Because some countries seem to think use of a herb that has a death toll of zero deserves the death penalty, but on the other hand couldn't give a shit about toddlers puffing on tobacco mixed with chemicals and has a death toll into the millions. It's all about money, and the failure to realize the financial benefits of the legalization of Cannabis, which would equal, if not topple those of tobacco. Legalized, taxed Cannabis could pay many countries national debts within 5-10 years.

In Indonesia, illegal drugs are super frowned upon and the trade & possession of them are harshly punished. Even though tobacco's physical effects are worse than cannabis, that knowledge is not widely known. There's just a lot of taboo with illegal drugs and alcohol (also because they're mostly Muslim), but not so with tobacco. Cigarette company owners are some of the richest people in Indonesia, so they have the power to create this bias in the media and bribe the government, etc. It's only in the recent few years that there's a huge warning put on each cigarette pack.
