Have you ever dreamed of having fresh kitchen herbs growing on your countertop? A little hydroponics growing system might be the answer. We were invited to review the Yoocaa LED Hydroponics Growing System (Model: YO-SPD12-001) and I had a lot of fun.
In this video, I'll show you how to set up and operate the Yoocaa Hydroponics Growing System and how it produced plants in my home.

I love that little Yoocaa grow system. We had one similar to that, but as you said, it does not make room for larger plants unless you use only two to four. The Tiny Tim Tomatoes (I have 3 in 1 quart pots of dirt under grow lights in the house) could be planted in that Yoocaa System, if you used only two plants per system. I think they would be lovely in there, but they get bushy, so I wouldn’t do any more than two. They get about 1 foot tall. We get tomatoes all the time off of them, so they are great little plants. We have a large 4’ x 6’ hydroponic system (and others) in storage. We actually grew the entire bed full of crops one year to see how it could be done. It worked great, and we had the appropriate grow light over the top of the bed. I thought it was fun, but even though we got veggies, like cherry tomatoes and even cucumbers, the plants were not the same as in the garden. Leaf plants would be great in any hydroponic system. You need room, you need lights and fertilizer and electricity. If the grid goes down it is not sustainable. For right now, while the grid is still up, if you wanted salad greens, chives, herbs, cherry tomatoes, you could do that easily with the Yoocaa. You would need about 6 of them at least, and probably 8 to continually keep the seeds going, for different lettuces. The good part is that you could place them all over the house, wherever there is a table to hold it. Another good part is that the house is an even temperature and the plants should thrive. If the grid goes down though, and it is winter, that would be a problem. All in all, you could have salad growing in your house. That is fun and healthy. I much prefer the Kratky system. It is the same thing as the Yoocaa, without the light and you can do it with any size bucket by cutting a hole in the lid, adding a 2” or 3” basket and stones or hydroponic balls. We do this in the greenhouse and get wonderful lettuce. MHPGardener describes and shows it and the results on his channel. He also does wonderful greenhouse hydroponics, in a fashion I have never done! This is a great video and a very cute little system.

Nicely done. I like the “it’s adorable” description. I think I’d probably agree. Seems cute (adorable), but maybe not sustainable, like you said. Everything isn’t for everybody…but, you guys are great about showing the community so many options of so many things available. So, again, nicely done! 🥰

Thanks for the review. I have 7 hydroponic indoor gardens, but not that one. Incidentally, the baskets that hold the growing medium can be reused. And while I generally use the plugs, you can use other things, including pool noodles cut to fit.

We have two units identical to this one. It is excellent for growing lettuce, specifically Buttercrunch. We did not have to purchase salad lettuce for several months. I let my last couple of plants go to seed in it and I am refreshing the set up with seed I harvested. We'll see how that goes. I have successfully reused the peat inserts, but have also purchased additional ones. One drawback I found is the timing of on-off with the lights. Both of mine are 14 hours on and 10 hours off, as opposed to the advertised 16 hours on and 8 hours off. We have had limited success with other herbs, not because of any failure with the unit, but because we have a cat who likes to eat herbs and thinks it is her personal salad bar. It's a good thing she doesn't like lettuce.

You must like BPA in your suppose to be HEALTHY growing? I wouldn't touch anything "silicon." To each his or her own I guess. I just wish people would do research instead of blindly trusting whatever goes on the market as the latest and greatest trendy thing.

Get yourself a double stack of racks to fit 10x20 grow pans and you can grow an absolute ton of microgreens. Some, like peas, can even be harvested twice. Microgreens with LED lights and a timer are extremely low-energy and efficient. I think you would benefit by looking into them more. I found it almost impossible to eat enough of mine even though I like dinner salads and a salad at every meal, as well as sauteeing the greens, etc. Setting up microgreens is way more knowledge-intensive than what is gotten into in this video, but the productivity is profound! And the nutrition is amazing. And it is not hard at all. Now think about staggering your planting times and getting a standing shelf unit for microgreens and buying seeds in bulk and you will never lack for fresh supremely healthy greens ever again.

Fertilizer: Hydro-garden Chemgro is a powdered hydroponic fertilizer. I recommend their 25lbs bags which are potent and an can last for years. I bought two bags and have not used them up after 7 years. You save much more money than buying liquid version, but you need hot water to easily mix and dissolve the powder. Their Hobby formula is general purpose and only need to add epsom salt. Tomato formula is good for fruits, but need both epsom salt and calcium nitrite. 25lbs bag used to be $50 five years ago ago, now is more expensive due to rising cost, but even at current price will last a very long time. You want to store them in a bucket with air sealed lid because moisture can make the powder clumps, but it's not that bad. Follow the instruction, don't over use fertilizer as it is counter productive to the growth and waste money. Starter plugs: 1inch Rockwool cubes. Buy 200-400 rockwool cubes at a time and it last many seasons. Airpump for oxygen: Technically you don't need them, "kratky method" is no airpump just leave an air gap for some of the roots the breath. For low electricity, not sure how well it work, but try a USB airpump powered by solar. Air stones choice is important. Cheap tiny air stones do not put out much bubbles, try cylinder ones. Fixing Flickering LED light: Look up videos on how to fix flickering led light, a video called "Aerogarden LED Repair". I bought 2 Aerogarden from 2014 or 2015. Approx 2 years later the lights start to flicker (probably by design). I just had to unsolder the three bad radial capacitors and solder in new 25v 1500uf ones, now its 2022 and the units are still working great. UFO Grow light: The main growlight I use right now the TopoGrow UFO. they have 300w or 600w option (the actual electricity usage is less). It's full spectrum, fanless, and the light color is yellow. It cover a wide area and is very convenient to raise and lower. I highly recommend not buying pink or purple grow lights which is a great way to invite police and criminals to your property for obvious reason. My favorite plant to grow with my Aerogarden is the lettuce leaf basil, Migardener called it Mammoth basil.
