Induction of Labor at 39 Weeks? The ARRIVE Trial Reviewed & Its Impact on Your Labor & Birth!

Has your doctor mentioned an induction of labor at 39 weeks (or a week before your due date)?? Wondering why? Look no further!! In August 2018 the New England Journal of Medicine published a large study called the ARRIVE Trial that looked at 6,106 women who were randomly split into two groups: ones that were induced at 39 weeks despite their Bishop Score (or how ready their cervix is) and the other that waited for labor to start on its own. They found that amongst those that were induced they had a 3.6% less chance of requiring a Cesarean birth for delivery. Now, it’s not quite that cut and dry! Does that mean that all women should be induced at 39 weeks to help avoid a cesarean? NOPE! BUT there are some considerations I want you to understand so that you can make the most informed, confident decision possible. Enjoy!

This makes me feel so much better about our decision to have an elective induction at 39 weeks. My husband works out of state and me going into labor naturally scares me that he won't make the birth in time and I'll be alone. Another reason is that I tested positive for GBS so I wanna make sure I get the proper doses of antibiotics before delivery. And the third reason is I need to plan for someone to watch our 22 month old for a few days while we're in the hospital. Update: Our elective induction went so well!! It was a very positive experience!! I had a 14 hour labor and baby girl was super healthy weighing at 7 lbs 14 oz. I hope this is helpful to someone out there because I know I was pretty nervous.

@@sheemabahadar6411 Hi there!! I've only ever been induced so I'm not sure, but I heard that too. Pitocin is a VERY intense drug that takes your contractions to a whole new level so keep that I'm mind. My first labor was not a very positive birth, but that's a whole other story. I think that if you're already planning on getting the epidural than you should be okay. I knew going in that I wanted the pain meds and I soon as she broke my water and the contractions started getting intense, that's when I got the epidural. I knew the pitocin was coming next and I wouldn't dare try go natural again without pain meds, like I did with my first labor. My second birth was so relaxing and calm. I actually got to take a nap for a couple hours before having to push 👍 My sister has had two vaginal, pain free births (which she loved and had wonderful experiences!) and with her third she got induced and they gave her pitocin and she eventually had to get the epidural. She said it was way more intense than natural labor. I know that the epidural can slow down labor for some women, but with my body it actually sped it up (both times). I think it was because my body was actually able to finally relax, which is important. So anyways, that's just our experiences!! I hope this was helpful in some way!! This has really put my mind at ease. I lost my daughter at 22 weeks gestation November 27th 2018. I’m due actually with my 3rd child on the day that we lost her, but we are going to be inducing me at 39 weeks (in a few days) so that I can be in a controlled environment and not freak out. I suffer with a severe panic disorder and I am terrified of something happening to me and my son, and this really made me feel so much better... I always get so much shit from people when I say I want to be induced, but my doctor really believes it’s the best option for me.

I had an elective induction and it was the best decision I could have made. it was not medically necessary. my cervix was already 3cm without any contractions and labor probably would have started on its own soon, but I had nine months of HG and was entirely miserable. I did it for my own comfort and because of it, I had an incredibly positive birth experience. baby was super healthy (apgar score of 9 at 5 minutes) and I definitely don't regret it.

I feel this. I have HG throughout and high blood pressure since 20 weeks teetering on pre eclampsia. Plus a loss last year at 26 weeks, which ramps up my anxiety the longer this one bakes. Kind of hoping this doctor is amenable to an induction as I’m now 38 weeks...

I was induced at 39+4. I had a blood pressure spike during my third trimester. It went back down but my doctor said I was ready and I could be induced if I wanted to. I was only in the hospital 2 days, including the night after the baby was born. For me it was a great experience.

Thank you so much for this video! I am an American living in Cairo expecting my first baby in Feb. Cairo has such an incredibly high C-section rate, because most doctors prefer it, and because there is so much cultural fear surrounding vaginal birth. I on the other hand, have loved learning about the birthing process (thank you for all your amazing videos!) and am excited to go through this process as naturally as possible. My doctor is one of the few doctors in the city that advocates for vaginal births, and so far he has been so very kind, understanding, and respectful of my thoughts, preferences, questions, etc. But this week I was thrown for a loop, and genuinely kind of discouraged, when my doctor told me that it is his practice to induce at 39 weeks. Thank you for giving us an explanation of this study, and for helping me think through how to continue this conversation with him the next time I see him.

Thanks for doing this, you have provided much more information than my doctor did even when I asked him where I could actually read the study myself, he couldn't tell me. Using the link for the New England Journal of Medicine I was able to actually read THE study myself not just articles in response to the study. What I learned is really important. The Arrive study compares moms who had Induction at 39 weeks to moms who are termed "expectant management" which means they were induced at full term 40 weeks. So the comparison is between two types of induced labors NOT comparing induction at 39 weeks to non-induced labor. That is a crucial detail. Pay close attention to Figure 1 of the study which shows the break down of what constitutes "expectant management". People who had non induced labor were excluded from the study, therefore there is zero data comparing induction at 39 weeks to non induced labor.

I did an elective induction at 39 weeks. My induction failed 😞, and I ended up having a c-section after 38 hrs of labor. I’m glad for all the moms on here who had a successful induction 🙂

Keep in mind that, as Sarah said, this particular study and the resulting statistics will not be applicable to you if you are being induced for medical reasons. This study only included women who were induced for no medical reason at all. Just a reminder :) But in any case, all the best!! And congratulations ❤️

I've been induced for all 3. The last was elective. Ask your nurses if you can stand and hold the monitor in place to get through the majority of your contractions before getting an epidural (if you're getting one) bring lots of stuff to keep you entertained. It's a lot of waiting around!

I love that you bring all these facts to us and give us both sides of the story. I think you're amazing! 🥰 Side note, I don't know if it's because I'm in Canada or if it's specific to my doctor, but my OB wouldn't induce before 41 weeks whether I had wanted it or not (unless there is a medical reason of course). That's their policy, which I suppose is a good thing.

The America College of Obstetricians recommend 41 weeks, as most mums will go into labour naturally by then. Fears of struggling to push out a large baby by a first time mum, are no longer accepted as fact; as Wanda Klaman, first time mum, used Aniball birth facilitating device to achieve 10cm birth canal diameter prior to birth and almost reached 42 weeks, so gave birth to a very large baby, 4.4kg, without foetal distress; so not requiring episiotomy or forceps. A 3kg baby is average. Please see Reviews both on Epi-no Delphine Plus and Aniball websites; Epi-no Delphine Plus -forceps applied to a baby's head, because baby lay across mum's tummy from left to right i.e. a transverse lay. The floor of muscle of the lower tummy had already be transformed into a trapdoor prior to birth, so no cut or tear to mum. Largest baby born to first time mum in UK was in Gloucester weighing 15lb (7lb average) and should have been a Caesarean section, nicknamed King George, by mum. Mums can do it, if helped by Birth Canal Widening to 10cm.

Currently 29 weeks and this video is SO helpful. My husband leaves out of state for work for 3 months a week later than our due date..and I’m so terrified of him missing the birth because I’ll be overdue... This is my first pregnancy/birth, we are low risk, and our dates are accurate, so I’m feeling much more pro-induction! Going to talk to my doctor about this option.

My first delivery was fast and natural without an epidural. The second was at 41 weeks and an induction to avoid a c section without and epidural. The third was an induction at 39 weeks without an epidural ( my blood pressure was high and water levels were low). I did have a great team each time and was allowed to have optimal results. My water broke naturally with baby #3 and it didn’t with the other two. I wish that more women were supported and given options that would work for them.

I find all of this so fascinating. My doctor discussed induction with me today (I’m 39 weeks and being induced Tuesday) but she mentioned my bishop score being low, she mentioned that it has increased risk of c section, and then she had me sign a paper regarding me understanding of increased risk of delivery cesarean with a 39 week induction. I plan to call tomorrow and set another appointment with her before my induction to discuss the obvious differences. I was never told about why 39 weeks was an option. I just wanted to get this baby out and I’m confident that a hospital setting is what I prefer. I have no medical conditions, baby has no known medical conditions or complications, and I have had care since 8 weeks pregnant,

I talked with my doctor about this a lot before having my baby in August. I ended up waiting to be electively induced until 40+1 rather than 39 weeks. I work in research and the data was convincing enough for me that I didn’t want to wait to go on my own past my due date.

To me this approach makes a lot of sense. Going past your due dates and waiting for "natural labor" has its own risks.

I watched your videos throughout my pregnancy and really appreciated what you do. Thanks to you and your videos even though I had a difficult birth/ recovery I was still able to have a positive birth memory and that really inspired me. I want to go back to school to eventually become a CNM however I have no idea where to start and I was wondering if maybe you could give me some advice on what path to take as far as schooling if the end goal is becoming a CNM. My doctor tried to offer an induction. I have no health issues, I don’t want to rush the process. Only way I would do it is if it was necessary. My first time and all of this is just scary to me . But your videos are very helpful so glad I found your page.

I appreciate you showing both sides! I have gone into labor naturally 3 times and had 3 vaginal deliveries with large babies- 9 lbs, 7oz; 10 lbs, 12 oz, and 9lbs, 12 oz. I’m a fairly small lady but my pelvis could handle it. For some reason with this pregnancy (#4), I started psyching myself out about a baby that feels to be very large and researching induction. However for now, after you presented the differences, I’m going to stick with being able to relax at home and go into labor naturally and then go to the hospital when I know I’m actively progressing . I like to eat, move, no wires. Unless of course, it becomes medically necessary. Thanks for the clarity!

I was scheduled to be induced August 30th at 39+5. I was so miserable and my body was in so much pain. My bishops score was 8 so I was a good candidate to get induced anyways. Luckily my daughter decided to come naturally the day before haha!

Thank you for this video. My fourth birth was my first induction (due to hypertension) and statistics aside, like you said, it was an incredibly different experience. I was in an wonderful hospital with unlimited resources and was super supported, thankfully with a vaginal birth as the outcome. I appreciate you breaking down the statistics and supporting parents to make informed decisions. I wanted to show moms just a little bit of the differences between an induction and a natural labor so I vlogged my birth. I’m not nearly as cute or fun as you, haha, but I hope it’s ok that I post this video here giving a direct view of just what an induction can look like. Love your videos, keep up the good work!

Found this at the perfect time. I’m a FTM almost 38 weeks and have had SPD the second half of my pregnancy in addition to my baby sitting on my sciatic nerve. I’m scheduled to be induced at 40+5 but I just don’t know if I can do an extra week and a half with the pain. I felt guilty about even asking about elective induction, but this makes me feel a lot more confident! Thank you!

I was aware of this research when I had my baby in August. It definitely was a deciding factor when I chose induction at 39 and 3. My BP was also high for the first time throughout my pregnancy, along with my anxiety due to pregnancy after loss. My baby was born healthy after 11 hours of labor with no pain meds and a vaginal delivery! She even had her hand by her head when she was born! Super fun for me!😂🤣 Thank you for making a video about evidence on elective inductions. I think it helps pregnant women make the best decisions for them. You're wonderful!

Did you tear badly a delivering her like that? Cause that's how my baby girl came out (and sunny side up) and I got a 4th degree tear. I also didnt get anything for pain. I was induced 39 + 6 by having my OB break my water. I was already 6cm dilated at the time

@@molecularbandit I didn't tear my perineum at all. But because my daughter's hand was by her face, she did tear the entire length of my vaginal wall with her elbow. I had to go to the OR and get sutured up because they had no clue in the delivery room where all the blood came from! I definitely had pain meds then, which I was good with since we didn't share blood anymore😀

Getting electively induced in 5 days! 7/20/21 (original due date 7/25- which i was really stuck on labor naturally) but I'm watching videos(this is my first one so far lol) and its really nice to hear positive things about it and reading comments!!! I had to be induced with my 3rd baby because my blood pressure was a little high and now I'm 36 weeks with my 4th baby and my doctor said we're planning an induction again. At first I was a little hesitant but with it being so close to Christmas, the success we had last time, the fact that my babies seem to get bigger each time, and now this video, I think I'm just going to go for it.

I had an induction with my first at 39 weeks because they thought he was big. My induction took 42 HOURS! Vaginal birth. He was only 7lbs 2oz. Needless to say I was not happy. I went into labor on my own with my second at 39+3 and labored at home 6 hours before going to the hospital. He was born 4hrs later no meds no epidural. Also vaginally birth. I would never electively choose an induction again.

Ugh my doc litterly made me sign the paper for to be induced at 39 weeks too , she said my baby would die or be paralyzed if I wait till the due date if the baby was too big or could step on the cord and die inside of me I felt like crying hearing that so I signed the paper but ugh I hope my delivery goes okay she said I could have a c section and be there for like 4-5 days i wanted to just have a natural birth no meds on my regular due date but I guess that’s not happing one part of my head says yeah the doc knows best and I don’t want anything to happen to my baby but apart of me wonders , like ok woman have 10 pound babies no problems

39+5 and I go in a few hours for an elective induction. I've been 3cm 80% effaced for almost 3 weeks (2nd baby) and I'm soooo uncomfortable. It's hard to walk, I can't sleep, I'm nauseous and I've been having painful, irregular contractions for weeks. I am so glad they gave me the option to do an elective induction ❤ Thank you for the info!

My doctor (also) brought up induction at 39 weeks. It was nice because he was really calm and said "we see with first-time moms a decreased need for c-section if they don't go to term", but didn't shove it down my throat and I knew I could 100% call the shots. I've decided to induce mostly because I'm impatient haha. She's a healthy girl and I am so excited to meet her. If she decides to make her way early, that's great!

@@menomeno69 my comment was so long ago, I’ve actually had 2 inductions since then! So with my first, I was electively induced at 39+3, labor was about 12 hours and it was intense. However, I didn’t have good coping skills, I went into labor thinking I could just wing it (wow I was so wrong!!). I wanted to go without pain medication but I ended up using IV drugs and they attempted an epidural but it failed. It was a rough experience for me and I ended up with some complications from the epidural. My baby was completely healthy and had no issues through the experience. With my second induction, I was also 39+3 and the doctor decided to induce because I had gestational diabetes and he was concerned my baby would get too big. Looking back, I regret listening to the doctor on some level because my baby was NOT too big and I really wanted to experience spontaneous labor. Overall, the experience was much more positive than my first birth. I learned a lot more coping skills and I was able to use a tub and the water was so helpful. I actually used the breathing techniques from one of Sarah’s videos and they worked so well to keep me calm and get me through the different stages of labor. I made it to 9cm before getting IV drugs and we didn’t attempt the epidural because I was so traumatized by my first experience with it. The only really bad part was that my cervix wouldn’t fully dilate so the doctor ended up using her hand to push the last little “lip” back over my baby’s head and it was so incredibly painful. But after that I was able to push and it was over! My second labor was around 15 hours and my baby was perfectly healthy throughout the whole thing. I haven’t experienced spontaneous labor but I do believe that being induced with pitocin does make contractions more painful. If you look into the differences between natural oxytocin vs pitocin, you’ll see what I’m talking about. With my second induction, they tried using a Foley balloon, which is a medication-free way to open the cervix and potentially induce labor but in my case, it didn’t send me into full labor so they used pitocin after the balloon came out.

I had read studies that the risk of stillbirth went up past 39 weeks if the mom was over 35 (I’m 38). I was still leaning towards waiting for labor naturally (while paying very close attention to kick counts). But reading this study a few months ago made me much more open to induction. Plus at my 31 week ultrasound they estimated baby weight at 5 lbs 8 oz! The decision was taken out of my hands though with a pre-eclampsia diagnosis at 35 weeks. I was induced from 0 effacement, 0 dialation, and -3 position. Delivered vaginally 40 hrs later with forceps (pushed for 4 hrs - magnesium counteracted the pitocin). Baby was 7lbs 5 oz. She did spend 10 days in the NICU - she was a feeder/grower. Lungs, temp, blood sugar were all good:).

Does the study cover anything about the use of an epidural (or the addition of pitocin in that case) for the expectant group? If that wasn't taken into account I would wonder how much that influences things?

My wife was induced by our OB/GYN at 39w 2d in October of 2018 because her doctor was a proponent of the arrive trial (we asked her, she did not bring it up - I work in the field and had been reading about the study). Pre-pregnancy she was 86 lbs and 5'5" (extremely tiny). She delivered vaginally and our son is perfectly healthy. She did require a suction aid to deliver and did tear a bit. She was also induced a year later with our daughter at 39w 3d, starting her pregnancy around 95 lbs and delivered vaginally again, with a much shorter delivery (20 hours vs. 10 hours) no suction but she did tear... again our daughter was also perfectly healthy. We were very happy with the outcome. Just one story but I thought I would share it for any teeny tiny expecting moms out there - its possible you can deliver vaginally and this method might be the difference. As explained to us by doctors and nurses, there are two reasons... 1) Your placenta is healthier and can support a longer labor at 39w. The placenta starts to degrade after your due date and won't support the baby as well during labor. i.e your baby could experience decells which require them to perform an emergency C-section during labor. 2) The baby is smaller and is easier to deliver. Baby is gaining about a half pound a week. Our children were 6 lbs 11 oz and 6 lbs 5 oz respectively. Smaller babies are easier to fit through the birth canal. Disclaimer: this is just our experience and may not apply to every situation and my wife's second delivery was not technically an ARRIVE trial birth since it was not her first baby - but our OB/GYN based on her medical opinion thought it was best for us and we agreed.

I was high risk due to my HG and fibroids. I am no longer considered high risk because my HG resolved and my fibroids did not grow too large. I’m 36 weeks now and my MFM doctor has deemed my pregnancy healthy and has recommended induction at 39 weeks. I didn’t know why but now I do. I’m happy to be induced in 3 weeks because I’m tired. I was scared at first but this puts me at ease with my decision.

My mom is a OB nurse & brought this study up to my doctor since my husband and I were both huge babies (I was 10.16 my mom ripped completely & I fractured her pelvis) & the doctor acted like he never heard of this in his life. He told my mom to stop pulling things from google 🤣 He refused to let me get an induction before 41 weeks although my OB back home had recommended me to be induced @ 39. I had communicated to him too that I was willing to take the risk because I felt that if I progressed further I would need a c section and all I wanted was to avoid that. I was stuck @ 1 cm dilated for a month & my body wasn’t progressing. I ended up going into labor the day after my membranes were stripped. 24 hours laboring, baby boy weighted 9.6 but I delivered vaginally w minimal tearing. This was my firstborn ❤️ I hate to admit that I had a better birth experience following his orders & am glad that he was right in my case, that i was able to have my baby naturally. I like that this conversation is starting to happen though & hopefully it does allow women to have more control over their body. I can tell you it feels like absolute shit being told you don’t have any options! I was miserable @ the end of my pregnancy & if my doctor wouldn’t have stripped my membranes I don’t think I would have progressed as fast.

This is interesting. When you first shared the results I said “Why??? It doesn’t make sense.” But when you suggested the induction group may have received some unintentional extra effort towards achieving a vaginal birth, that made sense to me. My preference is to go into spontaneous labor to help achieve a medication-free birth. Fingers crossed that it works out for me 🤞🏼☺️

After going through 2 inductions with my first two babies I can firmly say "HELL NO" to an elective induction. I've never been so uncomfortable in my life. Y'all need to realize that pitocin contractions are NOT normal contractions.

I've been given Pitocin with 6 of my 8 labors and I dont feel like my contractions were any "harder" then my labors without pitocin. 🤷‍♀️ all of my induction experiences have been fabulous!

The pain isn’t more painful, your body just has less time to “warm” up to the intensity... so yes, if you’re opting for a more natural labor with no pain medication, then yea I can see this being a nightmare.

I've had 3 inductions. The first was 5 days and we tried the oral pill(2 rounds but baby reacted horribly), 2 rounds of cervadil(did nothing) pitocin for like 24+hrs then broke my water and then over another 24hrs on pit before finally delivering after less than 10mins of pushing. My second was just 2 (not even a full second) rounds of cervadil and she nearly delivered herself. Then my third was just pitocin. The last was kindof elective (I had some medical issues going on but I could have tried and waited to go into labour naturally.) My husband is one of 10 and all vaginal and without pain med relief so my husband had a specific picture of labour and delivery in his head and he brought up getting induced this last time. Firstly we were commuting 4hrs for the dr, second he didnt think anyone could handle the panic drive to the hospital, and once I start progressing I go super effing quick. So quick he almost delivered my second even though we were in the hospital.

It must depend on the person because the two times that I had pitocin the contractions were way more painful... To the point where with my third birth I didn't even know I was in labor and I thought the contractions were Braxton Hicks because they didn't hurt bad enough to be the "real thing"... Literally didn't think I was in labor until my water broke after 6-8 hours of contractions... when my water broke I went straight to the hospital and he was born 2 hours later... I had gone shopping, made dinner, done laundry, with no thought at all.

My doctor tried to induce me at exactly 39 weeks and it’s didn’t take so stayed in the hospital for 48 hrs but then got sent home still having contractions. cause she didn’t think it was going to do anything so she had me come back to the hospital 3 days later and try again. I had my beautiful baby boy on 9/17/19 @ 9:17pm!!

I had to be induced at 36 weeks because I was leaking amniotic fluid for a week (very minimum leaking that made me unaware that it was my water)... this was 2 months ago and long story short... after hours of being admitted they wanted things to hurry along, they ruptured my bag at 2cm and IMMEDIATELY started pitocin and PROMISED me that since it was my first that it would take hours and hours and hours until he would arrived. No. They ruptured my bag at 4:45am, then pitocin, and at 7:04am he was born. As you can imagine it was intense (and no one believed me of what I was feeling). I was so confused why they didn't let me just labor after rupturing the bag instead of starting pitocin right away. Yes, I was at risk of infection, sure, but damn. Additionally, no time for any loved ones to even have a chance to be there with me... so I didnt have anyone to back me up that I wanted to see how labor would progress WITHOUT pitocin right away... blah blah blah, they also diagnosed me with preeclampsia that same day. It was a shit show. So, I told my friend that if i had the chance that i would have let him come naturally.

One more thing! I thank my sister for hounding me to do hypnotbirthing... it was so useful with the physical and mental stress of my entire experience. It was useful enough that the staff was in shock that I demanded out of no where that HE WAS COMING. Checked me and I was fully dilated and everything got chaotic. Phew. Childbirth is unpredictable.

I think the bishop score is still really important. I had two elective inductions both at 39 weeks. I was already 5cm dilated with my first and 4cm dilated with my second. My labors were 9 hours with the first and 6 with the second from start of pitocin to delivery. I only was okay with being induced because I was already progressed a good bit, I don’t know who would want to be induced and possibly have to be in labor for days.

My first child was 11 days overdue, took 21 hours to be born and I was 2 cm dialated. Many times I thought I was gonna end up having cesarean, nurses said she was too big , she pooped inside and she had the cord around her neck. My induced child was only 16 hours long starting at 0 dilated . They are 8 years apart. Now on my 3rd baby I am contemplating induction at 39 weeks.

I’ve had 2 non medically necessary elective inductions 39 weeks and 40/3. 1st was longer but fine, 2nd was short, sweet and amazing! 7 hours, no tearing, no pain, best birth experience. Will have a 3rd if my son doesn’t come by 39 weeks again in August.

Do you know if they’re going to do this study again or further collect data? The small percentage between the two groups doesn’t really sway me or seem like a reason to have an induction, especially since fetal mortality was not a difference at all or even something that came out as a positive/negative from the study.

Thank you for breaking this down so well! I gave birth two months ago and got so tired of people claiming that ARRIVE says going past 39 weeks increases the risk of stillbirth. I can’t tell you how many “discussions” I had with people who told me going past 39 weeks put my child in grave danger. I think people just use this study to justify induction when they don’t want to be pregnant anymore. It’s great that elective induction for FTMs doesn’t bring cascading interventions. I will say though that my 41+1 baby is alert and nurses like a champ whereas a lot of the babies in my pregnancy group who were induced at 39 are lethargic and “wouldn’t” latch. That’s anecdotal of course but I’d love to see a longitudinal study that looks at outcomes of expectant management versus elective 39wk induction. I’d guess that there are benefits other than cost alone to letting babies come when they’re ready (up to 41+6 after which the risk of stillbirth does increase).

The problem is that if you wait until a first time mom goes into labor naturally it could be 42w which means the placenta is not going to support a long labor and so she may need an emergency c-section. Also the baby is 1.5 lbs heavier (baby is gaining .5 lbs per week) and may not be able to be delivered vaginally which again would require an emergency c-section.

@@raytownloc The America College of Obstetricians recommend 41 weeks, as most mums will go into labour naturally by then. Fears of struggling to push out a large baby by a first time mum, are no longer accepted as fact; as Wanda Klaman, first time mum, used Aniball birth facilitating device to achieve 10cm birth canal diameter prior to birth and almost reached 42 weeks, so gave birth to a very large baby, 4.4kg, without foetal distress; so not requiring episiotomy or forceps. A 3kg baby is average. Please see Reviews both on Epi-no Delphine Plus and Aniball websites; Epi-no Delphine Plus -forceps applied to a baby's head, because baby lay across mum's tummy from left to right i.e. a transverse lay. The floor of muscle of the lower tummy had already be transformed into a trapdoor prior to birth, so no cut or tear to mum. Largest baby born to first time mum in UK was in Gloucester weighing 15lb (7lb average) and should have been a Caesarean section, nicknamed King George, by mum. Mums can do it, if helped by Birth Canal Widening to 10cm.

I think each circumstance is different and each woman and her dr should be able to make the best decision for her and baby. Elective induction may be the best option for a woman even if there's no "medically necessary" reason. Just my own personal opinion

My doctor is retiring at the end of the year so he indroducted induction at 39 weeks or I would have had to find a new doctor and I did not want to do that because his C-Section rate is the lowest in my area! But also was worried being induced would increase my C-section rate so hearing this has put me at ease a little!

I’m looking into an elective induction and hoping my doctor is okay with it. We’re military and it’d be great to have a set date to have the baby to have family come help. My first labor I was medically induced at 35 weeks and it lasted 6 hours, and my second I was in labor for 30 minutes and pushed for almost an hour so I’m really worried to go into labor myself. I was 5 cm dilated at 37 weeks and had him on his due date waiting. I wish my doctor would of helped with my second. So fingers crossed this new doctor understands my concerns since we’re 45 minutes from the hospital.

This is so frustrating! I am 39 weeks and 2 days today, I requested to be electively induced this past Monday (exactly 39 weeks), and I was exactly 1 cm dilated. The midwife could even FEEL his head! However, they said since my cervix wasn’t favorable, I would be more likely to need a C-Section. I have no medical issues, I have had a healthy pregnancy, and had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks to confirm due date... This is insane! I feel like I wasn’t heard at all’s

I go to a group of CNM, they are great, being onduced was only brought up with my first when i got to 42wks, and with my second, induction was brought up at 39wks cos baby wasn’t doing well while on the monitor. I am pregnant with baby #3 and we are all on the same page, avoid an induction unless needed. Being induced is so intense, and this pregnancy has been smooth, so we are all working towards spontaneous labor, but flex and flow 😉

I get that this is a high quality study, but why does it uproot all the pst studies showing induction increases c-section rates? Why aren’t we looking at this as an additional data point? There are OB’s in the practice I go to who are pushing for everyone to be induced at 39 weeks due to this study, and I’m not so sure about it

I am currently 28 weeks pregnant I have an 18 month old daughter. When I had my daughter I wanted my c-section scheduled on a certain day that was important to our family.. and my doctor told me they could not do the C-section before 39 weeks. That in New York state unless it is deemed medically necessary.that New York state says the baby's lungs are still developing and every day counts so you are not allowed to have a C-section unless it is medically necessary before 39 weeks.. he said that if you want to be induced it has to be after your due date.

I am totally for an elective induction if there is a medical reason for it. I had preeclampsia for my first birth so had to be induced at almost 39 weeks. I'm 31 weeks pregnant now and I'm hoping for a vbac and I rather go into labor naturally. It's truly better and healthier, if there's no medical reason, to trust that our bodies will go into labor naturally. They were made for this! 💖

Just became a dad on Christmas. So this is as recent of an experience as it gets. My wife did NOT like induction of labor. I was there with her during her entire labor period so I can vouch for that. Harrowing experience both for me and her. One huge thing that I feel is the difference between natural and elective induction (as a dad / partner/ human being) is during elective induction, you are on a clear liquid diet. So depends on how long your labor goes, by the time you're pushing to get the baby out via normal vaginal delivery, my wife was just super exhausted due to both sleep deprivation and lack of regular healthy solid food in her belly. Maybe her body isn't made for induction. But honestly mamas, just go for a regular delivery. Eat food before you go to the hospital etc. This was the first video of Ms. Lavonne that I watched and became a fan of her extremely informative videos. Thanks Sarah!

In NZ it’s very hard to get an induction unless medically necessary or over 42 weeks. They refused me an induction with my first son, kept telling me “babies come when they’re ready” despite me being in tears begging them and telling them how I kept going into labour and home and not progressing. Finally at 42 weeks I was induced and it ended in a very traumatic emergency C section which I needed to be put under for. My son came out dry, squished and swollen. OVERDUE. They said he was way too big and I never would have progressed naturally. Next time I did a VBAC and by the grace of God got a midwife that went above and beyond to get them to agree to induce me at 38 weeks. I was induced and had a perfect 8 pound 9 ounce baby. Any longer and it would have likely ended the same. Because I was listened to, I was able to give birth to my second son without a traumatic emergency surgery. Can’t say how rare it is that I was actually able to get that induction though.. long story short, pregnant people should be listened to more and babies DONT ALWAYS COME WHEN THEY ARE READY.

Thank you for this. My doctor kind of threw this at me and I wasn’t sure how to respond. He put it in a way of health of the baby first experience last and I totally agree with health of the baby first but all of my instincts were screaming no to induction. Especially with covid going on I planned to labor as long as I could at home (have to wear a mask during labor at the hospital) and wanted a natural labor. But he put it in a way where if I don’t choose induction at 39 weeks I’m choosing experience over baby and so I agreed to it. Now I’m dreading the experience when I had been looking forward to the challenge of my first birth. Still have some weeks to go so I’ll be more prepared next time I see him

This is the exact same thing I am going through. My instincts are saying let your body do its thing. but my doctor is saying that something bad could happen to my baby. This is my first child. I have a low risk pregnancy.

@@kimroddy943 I’m sorry you’re going through that. It was hard going against my doctor but he literally treated me like I knew nothing. I ended up going into labor on my own 4 days before my due date. I was doing good without an epidural, my nurse told me about it at the beginning and then said she wouldn’t mention it again. A few hours later the lady who sets up the birthing table came in and got in my head saying things like “I wish women got the epidural…I hate seeing them in pain…you know you don’t get a trophy for doing it without painmeds” 🙄 so a few hours later I ended up getting it. I was a 7/8 when I got it and then everything stopped and the cascade of intervention I didn’t want happened. 7 hours later the oncall doctor came in and checking me broke my water but said if I haven’t advanced in an hour we need to talk c-section. An hour later it was pushing time and I wish I had read more about that because I did everything not to do. I was straining and bearing down and 2 1/2 hours later my baby came out. I ended up getting a 4 th degree tear and the worst part of it all was the damn doctor suturing me up for 15 minutes and I felt everything. She kept telling me not to pull away but it was so painful. I wish I had advocated for myself and asked for a local. In hindsight, next time I want to have a doula. Someone who will actually advocate for me. Trust your instincts, if being induced at 39 weeks is something that makes you go…wait this doesn’t pass the smell test then don’t be pressured into doing it. They used to do routine episiotomies and now realize it’s best for mom to tear naturally. I have zero regrets about not being induced. I wish you all the best of luck with this amazing experience! Make sure to sniff that beautiful baby head and cuddle and bond. My baby’s 10 months now and I’m just so in love with her

Hey thank you so much sharing your experience. I am so sorry that you went through that kind of birthing experience. This last week I decided that not only was I going to not be induced but that I would hire a doula. She encouraged me to stand up for myself and take my power back. I cancelled the rest of my prenatal appointments and told her office exactly why I was cancelling them. I will go to labor and delivery to get the rest of my prenatal care before I go into labor and explain to them that I found out that my doctor will not be in town for my due date and that she was trying to convince me to induce labor without being upfront about not being in town and that I no longer trust her as my obgyn. It turns out that not only was my doctor not using evidence based communication and trying to use fear based language to convince me but she won't even be in town in my due date. I found this out at 37 weeks when I went to schedule a week 39 and week 40 appointment. I didn't even hear it from her. It was just a sorry, she nor the other doctor in our office will be in town to see patients and no, we don't know who the on call obgyn will be. I plan on filing a complaint with the hospital after my son is born and things have settled. I can't believe how far we have come as women in this world but how primitive some attitudes about child birth can be and real women.

Question: what would be considered early fetal gestational age determination? I was given a first ultrasound at 12.5 weeks so I wonder if that’s early enough to be very accurate.

Yikes! I’m 38weeks! I’m told to schedule for induction at 39weeks. It feels like they’re looking for an excuse to get me induced and they seem forceful about it! Their reason is, I have lots of fluids! I’m healthy and so is baby, her heartbeat rate is perfectly fine and healthy with lots of daily movements! I do not want to get induced but I’m going in tomorrow for consultation 😳😕

Hi @@DoladoDK My OB supported my decision on natural birth considering my and baby’s health and that our tests were on point. I Trusted my doctor, my mommy guts and my body🙏🏽❤️ then voila! I had a natural birth on full term, no complications! I still have a healthy beautiful baby girl she will be 15months in couple weeks!🥰
