great vid gray, you always make them very fun and engaging with beautiful end products. I'm a industrial designer that is about to enter their second year of college and was wondering if you had any tips on how you expose yourself to design and designers. I feel like my knowledge of design would be greatly expanded if I studied other designers, where do you start and how do you stay on top of designer and trends?
@somegraythings
@somegraythings Жыл бұрын
That’s a great and also difficult question. For the newest stuff, Instagram and Behance seem to be where designers are posting their newest work, but maybe TikTok gets bigger in the future. But one thing that really helped me when I started was looking at a single designer’s entire body of work for a few days and getting a feel for their style. There’s so many great designers out there so it’s really fun to discover them. Some of my favorites I talked about in my 7 questions video.

Design for Repairability is not a detail. It is a fundamental way of designing and engineering a product. It has impact on shape size and many more aspects. If you do it roperly it is not a detail, only if you try to fake it.

Most of these industrial designers know nothing about engineering evidently. A true industrial designer has to take into account physics, chemistry, biology(biomimetics), materials science, metallurgy, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering at the minimum. There is one pro that could come out of IDs without technical knowledge = first principles thinking.

@@somegraythings It's hard to teach something that requires so much discipline and even harder to convince someone that it will be worth it. At the minimum, I'd recommend people to learn about all the physical phenomenas that might occur in daily life. That alone will take design to the next level. Also, making it a point to browse sites like phys or eurekalert can and will help you make more informed decisions regarding material choices, new phenomena breakthroughs etc. I believe designers need to know more about the technical aspects of what they're trying to create and not just be "concept artists" and engineers need to know more about design.

my desire to become an industrial designer was completely oblitterated by the realization that everything i would be eployed to create would be subservient to the concepts of planned obsolescence and "aesthetic expiration dates" ... i also realised that if you're a person interested in creating products and tools of quality that last a lifetime, instead of manufacturing "desire" then this is the completely wrong field to do so...... become a furniture carpenter, and stay true to yourself

Good call! Or be an industrial designer and change the system 🤘
@9an13l

@@somegraythings The system won't be changed by industrial designers, but by those who employ them, and their ever increasing need for efficiency and streamlining within development and production processes will go so far that even the industrial designer will fall victim to this and be made obsolete. It's just a question of time, machine learning and computer processing power....

A bit of an oversimplification in my opinion, most of the small business I work with don't follow these principles and are conversely quite mindful of trying to add some form of sustainability into the product and/or packaging. Desire is one aspect of ultimately trying to get something to work and solve a problem, if you only work at the conceptual end of the process then you may not get too involved in the technical design aspects depending upon the company structure however. Very few products could ever last a lifetime, especially anything with some form of embedded electronics. The goal here should be to enable repair as mentioned, and also provide guidance to clients on how best to provide these services to customers. Unfortunately, until our governments get their s*** together and start providing infrastructure to manage electronic waste domestically, end of life for these kinds of products is going to be an ongoing problem.
