After I watched you video, I purchased a Juki 1181N - Walking foot machine. I used a Singer Heavy duty before and making canvas bags, dust covers for my equipment and now starting to make backpacks. The Singer served me very well. I did not have stitch quality issues like you mention. However, the machine strained on multiple layers of canvas and webbing combinations I used. The industrial machine makes light work of it all and the speed is an absolute pleasure if I need to do tent repairs etc where you sew really long seams! I never even dreamed of attempting the tent repairs on the home machines. Thanks for your advice, it opened a new world for me Julie. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this. I own an industrial Juki and several home Berninas. The Juki 5550N which cost me $500 used is a far superior machine to my Berninas. The quality and control it gives you for the cost is amazing. Home machines now seem like children's toys to me. The reason not to get one is not having the space. They are mostly maintenance free as well.

It is silent because it's a servo motor. We use servo motors at school. I don't like the older clutch motor due to the noise. The servo motor only makes a soft noise when you step on the pedal to sew. Unlike the clutch motor that moos like a cow whenever there is power supply, even when you are not stepping on the pedal. The clutch motor therefore consumes more energy due to its nonstop mooing. 😂🐮 This info is for readers who are not aware. 😊 I am ready to go and check my local dealer for this same model. 😍

Two biggest things you said that are not said enough. Feed consistency and stitch quality, if you have the room and do a lot of sewing, it’s worth the price of entry 👍🏼

Domestic machine is for personal purposes with many functions and features. while Industrial machine is for projects in case you want to. It's a heavy duty, low noise & long life. Yes I've been thinking about what do I do with more than 200 stitches and those childish auto-built designs of embroidery which computerized machine has. After watching your video , I made up my mind to buy this. Thank you very much. All points you braught up make sense to me.

Congratulations on your new machine Julie! My husband is always looking at these machines whenever we go to the shop where I bought mine last year (he worked in manufacturing before he retired) but I decided against it for many reasons. The space issue (I live in an apartment too) and I do want more features. My new machine (Elna Excellence 780) does have a specialized straight stitch function (HP) and offers something similar but has many of the other features I like too. I think for someone in fashion design like you, an industrial machine does make the most sense!

Thanks for this review! Very clear and informative. Also useful to know the price range. My Bernina has a good pedal, knee lift and stitch quality but it was quite expensive... for that reason I will use it until it works...hopefully another 10 years at least

You can always make button holes manually. Most sewing that I have used are that good making them anyway. I have a Pfaff 3.2 Expression IDT, and sometimes it’s great, and sometime not. Just depends on material and thickness.

That is a nice looking machine and it must work perfectly for large jobs like making clothing or quilting.

I have a USDM antique singer, 1930s, the kind that's all heavy durable metal, and i'm looking to modify it into an industrial-style machine...needs to work on vinyl, leather, upholstery, faux fur, etc with zero digital whizbang gizmos. Also looking for the speeds, my lesbian wife and fashion business partner needs to whip out our '70s inspired genderqueer fashion lines. I have years of relevant technical prowess and connections & money is no object for what I am building. What parts will i need to accomplish this?
