@@niero4201 I always heard it a different way. When he goes into the lines about how he loves and hates us, needs and fears us, the collective silence of the crowd is them comprehending what he was talking about and coming to terms with it. When he gets to the "laugh while he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself" line, the crowd's hearts break, and when he goes into the chorus right after, the cheering isn't laughter, it's collective support from everyone, trying to show him that no matter what he does, whether it's really funny or very real, he will have the support he needs to keep going, even if he sometimes hates and fears it. The crowd cheering right there is a symbol of hope, understanding, and kindness, and is, I feel, the most impactful part of the song. Bo's problems are real, but so is everyone's wishes for his health and happiness.

The part that always gets me is when he is singing the "i dont think i can handle this right now" part, but then he says "I should probably just shut up and do my job". Then he sings IN THE SAME MELODY about the burrito. Then, he finally says "you can tell them anything if you make it funny, make rhyme. If they still dont understand you then run it one more time" THEN goes back into the "I cant handle this"...he is literally mocking everyone saying that I am here expressing that I am declining mentally but youre ok with it as long as youre entertained.

Did you catch how the Pringles and chipotle skits are metaphors? When I think about this, I think about Robin Williams. We laugh and we appreciate Bo Burnham's art, but I really hope that one day we don't hear about his suicide. The Kanye aspect of this gets overlooked so much and very may well be the most impressive part of it. He absolutely nails every beat of this Kanye West impression, but he does something interesting; what starts as parody turns into an homage. By the end he's doing exactly what he was making fun of Kanye for doing; pouring his heart out using autotune & lighting to trick the listener. One of the great pieces of art ever created IMO.

Bo specializes in carefully manufactured spontaneity. One of the big themes of Inside was turning the editing process of a performance into a performance itself. Instead of trying to refine a given thought into a crafted statement, he puts his criticisms and adjustments into the piece itself. He shows us the tools he uses to make his art, because they're all he has on hand to talk about.

If there is one thing I've learned about comedy and comedians over the years it's that every single sentence is carefully crafted and timed. When they start out they'll get like 5-10-15 minute "sets". They time every joke. They know exactly how much time they need to perform routines they want to do and they're usually timed down to the second. There are a few comedians who go off script though, but that usually doesn't happen until they are famous. Bo Burnham might be one of those comedians. The only one I know from personal experience that extends his show is Gabriel Iglesias. He kept going for well over an hour after the 2-hour show was supposed to be over. I wouldn't be surprised if Bo does the same thing.

Bo Burnham makes me cry with his realism sometimes. We all think being rich and famous is what we want. But it all comes at a cost and when he talks about the burrito, he says, “why didn’t you tell me? @66maybe66
@66maybe66 2 жыл бұрын
This is just a tragic paradox of being genuine about pain with your audience. Especially in live shows. The audience can't all stand up in unison and say "we appreciate you." The best we can do to show our support for what he says is to cheer for him. But at the same time, cheering is also how we applaud a regular comedy act. If the audience cheers, is it because we care? Or because we're blindly lapping up his pain for our amusement, like a circus animal? if the audience doesn't cheer, is it because we understand his message? Or is it because we didn't like what he said, and think he wasted our time? After all, Bo said himself in this song - and even in the name of the special - that he wants to make us happy. He wants to put on a memorable show that we'll think of fondly, even if part of that appreciation is of how honest he is about a dark topic, not just simple laughs. He just finished pouring his heart out to us. It wouldn't be right to just sit in silence. Judging by the "look at them, they're just staring at me" line, he doesn't want that. And this sort of alienating distance between artist and audience goes both ways. A lot of the anxiety and self-doubt he expresses in Inside comes from the nagging sense of dishonesty he feels for using mental illness as part of his act. Bo had real panic attacks on stage, and expressed that in his art through this song, but he probably wasn't actively in the middle of a panic attack every time he sang it. I'm sure there were nights he had to stand up in front of a crowd and sing "Can't Handle This" - a song that's powerful BECAUSE it comes from such a dark place - even on one of his better days. I can't imagine how that might eat away at someone. He already doubts whether his audience even cares about his feelings, and now there's room to convince himself he's lying about his feelings for comedy act. It's common for people with anxiety or depression to feel guilty and beat themselves up, telling themselves that they're not really sick, they're just hamming it up for attention. For a professional comedian like Bo, those thoughts must be even worse. Anxiety is damn good at convincing you that you're the bad guy.

Everything is a metaphor in this.. bo is a phenomenal writer.. Pringle can metaphore: the Pringle can is a metaphor for his life and how he can't fit his hand in the Pringle can so he want to have a daughter who can fit her hand in the Pringle can and fulfill his life. Like the Pringle can is the fulfillment of his life so he's not satisfied and he's not even sure if the daughter will satisfy he's assuming that would be the next logical step as a adult is to have a kid and than maybe his life would than be satified. It not about the pringles its about that he's not satified with life even at the hyper successful position that he's at, there's just something thats missing. He tries to get EVERYTHING out of the Pringle can(life) and everything just spills out on his face, you know more than he wanted. So his number one problem is fulfillment in his life and he can't feel that fulfillment. Chipotle burrito metaphore: the burrito is a metaphor for trying to get too much outta life and its gonna coz you to have a mental breakdown, like noone was there to warn "me" that get to this position and trying to get as successful as you can nobody warned me "i" couldn't take this mentally. "I" wouldnt of done half the shit "i" did if "I" knew "i" would of been in this position where im extremely unhappy and not in the mental space I need to be. Like "i" wouldnt of done half this shit if I knew i couldn't handle it.. Then he REAL RALKS the audience about how they are his biggest problem. The wanting to please them and how it affects him. The love/hate dichotomy

Actually the pringles and chipotle was just it….just about pringles and chipotle. It was to take pressure off the audience and then hit them with the seriousness which is what he usually does. 1. Burrito is a metaphor for mental health and being overloaded 2. Panic attacks are improved when considering the sensation is the same as running. Racing heart, shallow breath, sweaty palms etc. When he had these panic attacks during this special he was expelling a lot of energy singing and dancing around. It was full on physical effort so the panic attack was kind of inevitable since you have to retrain your brain not to freak out when you do "exertion", he hadn't got that far in his journey yet.

About the specials, why not make a video after talking about how your perspective changed seeing them as an organic whole? I think it'd be an interesting idea. Much love Cliff, I have anxiety and bpd issues so I get the struggle fam. Have a great day!

And you yourself seem to be managing your own issues very well! Have a great one!

I just became a massive fan of Bo Burnham!👏 And I've been a massive fan of Cliff from his first Harry Mack video. Bo said he's trying to give the fans the happiness he cannot give himself. Cliff struggles with anxiety+, and yet he offers help to everybody else who's having a difficult time. Respect to both these men for their openness, and for continuing to improve the lives of others. But specifically Cliff--extending your hand to people by offering one-on-one interactions to those who aren't in a good place, and not getting the support they need...you are truly the best of us, brother.🙏

What's even deeper is the fact that he named this special "Make Happy" So he can always make the audience happy and provide laughter and bring us out of our downward spirals for an hour or two at a time. But it will always come at the cost of his own mental health. It's very much a modern day proverb. If killing one person to allow hundreds or thousands of other to live on. Is one comedians mental health and potential suicide justifiable if it allows hundreds or thousands of others to live on and continually laugh at his pain?

While it's still a controversial issue, when the US was founded, the Founding Fathers asked themselves a similar question, and after an insane amount of discussion and thought they decided that even if a hundred guilty people got away with a crime if they didn't also punish one innocent person, they would let them all walk free. It's the trolley problem all over again, if you pull the lever you chose to kill one person, but if you don't five die but you didn't choose to kill them. Knowing what it's like to deal with depression and anxiety, I wouldn't wish it on even the most cruel person to exist. Mental health problems are so overlooked, but they have the potential to destroy and kill people by the millions, and dying of suicide because you're tormented by your own brain, is about as horrific of a death as you get. No. No matter how many people benefit from the work, it's not worth an artist, musician, or comic's life. That's just my opinion though.

Now that youve seen it, go back and listen to it again and knowing how it ends, it makes it so much deeper. Like now you realize its not just him rambling about pringles, and burritos etc, theres so much more meaning to it. Like pringles meaning that hes doing everything he can to be happy and he just cant seem to get there no matter how hard he tries, and then wanting a child, thinking that will make him happy etc. I think Burritos was talking about his career\fame, and how he wouldnt of done it if he knew what it would lead to and that it wouldnt do for him what he thought it would (make him happy) and how it all came spilling out (his panic attacks). But thats just my interpretation, and with bo, you can take it so many different ways! Awesome reaction as usual!

When I saw this pre inside, I really didn’t know how bad his mental health was and this song was so jarring to me. Knowing what I know now about his 5 year break and him making inside, this hits soooo deep. He struggles to make other people happy so much that it gets to him and as he says he can’t handle it. Bo is an absolute genius and I connect so much with his content. I hope some day we can see him happy and in a good place, because he deserves it and he’s touched so many people with his art

Man quickly I just wanna say so many people are reacting to bo rn but I think you’re one of my favourite to watch, not just because you’re a fresh bo listener but your reactions so genuine and you actually listen and get really in depth. I think you should definitely watch his specials on Netflix, maybe even consider trying to react to what. on KZfaq as it might be allowed up because the whole is on his KZfaq channel but idk. If not, strongly strongly recommend Words, Words, Words or Oh Bo! Also E.T.A, for context this was his last song before quitting comedy for 5 years. Makes it so much sadder, but he came back so good!

The fact that this was his last performance before going silent for 5 years really makes you think about how much he was feeling while performing this. I wouldn't doubt that those screams at the end were less planned and more of an actual panic attack 💔

The entire song is very emotional..but the “i hope youre happy” at the end, and just the title Make Happy. It shows how he will do anything and everything for his fans just to put a smile on their faces even if that means that hes crying on the inside. It hurts so much to see this man in pain and during the part where he gets real everyone is so silent because most of the time mental health is sadly a topic that many people are not ready to talk about yet and he sensed that so when he started back to his comedy bit thats where people started cheering again.. i feel for this man on a deep level and i sincerely hope that he gets to a point in his life where hes truly able to be…happy.

Love your reactions and breakdowns man. Keep up the great work. I did want to mention that the last half of the song is typically the focus, and for good reason. But I’ve always felt the bit about the burrito holds a much deeper meaning… as he moves through the line at Chipotles, he asked for all these different “ingredients” - for example, the “lettuce, cheese, peppers” - but I try to view each of those ingredients through the lens of his very unique and personal journey and ascent to stardom. Fame, money, criticism… Eventually it simply becomes too much to handle. Consequently, the “tortilla”, possibly a metaphor for his capacity to effectively “contain” and manage the turbulent ride, and which also holds other ingredients that themselves could be interpreted as a variety of things - for example, his health, his meaningful relationships and, ultimately, his happiness - becomes overwhelmed and perhaps even left towards the bottom of what turns into his “burrito” (possibly a metaphor for his mental state), which bursts from the immense and building pressure, much like an overinflated balloon. Had he known this would be the result, he wouldn’t have asked for “half the shit” because of its eventual effect on the end product: his life and well-being. It could be that I’m way off here, but that’s how I’ve always interpreted it. And I don’t want a messy burrito.
