Yay Ian! Great Interview!! I am the Set Decorator he is talking about on Parks, LOVE and Good Place. He's such a fantastic Production Designer to work with. And yes the "Open Pit" Sign I hung in Donkey Dougs apartment was a Parks Throwback. ;)

I feel like production design is one of the most important, yet most overlooked part of achieving the film look in micro budget productions.

well, it is a common adage among producers to "put as many dollars on the screen as possible"

‘8½’ Federico Fellini, script: 275 MCU: ...Pan follows as he walks forward, looking to the right and left. Agostini’s voice can be heard in the background reciting names and figures. Guido speaks with some degree of irony. GUIDO (CONT’D) What a wonderful production team!...

I loved this even more because I’ve seen all 3 shows. Watching Parks & Rec & the Good Place are just so much fun to watch, so seeing behind the scenes of what a production designer actually does is super interesting.

Very interesting details! For me as a German these supposed to be messy places in american movies look all the same... :D

Much like careful lighting, production design really shows how much of the Cinematic Look™ budget filmmakers try to achieve is a matter of taste and expertise rather than gear or budget. So many of these details are very cheap to implement, but they still make a world of difference. The first time I heard of this concept was a D4darious video where he says to avoid shooting against white walls, and that plain white walls are a hallmark of amateur filmmaking. Once he said it I started noticing it everywhere - you don't see white walls in movies anywhere as much as you do in real life. EDIT: Right after I posted my comment I got to the part of this video where D4darious actually shows lmao

Very funny spaces. It helps to understand the weird decors made to fit cameras in and to improve our own home design without those uncanny sets and stages to get ecological, vegan, and zero waste lifestyle spaces. Thanks.

Idk if it’s the best... but if anyone wants to become a production designer u can search up a script example then try to get creative in photoshopping app (or drawing it) u like then try to create the script example scenery, so u can practice. hope this helps! Edit: or if u like, find a real movie script a movie u don’t know about on internet then try to create what u think the scenery might be and compare it to the real movie scenery to see how accurate u got

Especially because their are such cool and impossible sets from The Good Place, talking about the kinds of ones that would be on any show just feels like a waste

here is a really good question no one has asked and i hope you can find someone to answer it... We know that all these music video clips are been recorded in 4k, so why is 90% of the music video clips being uploaded in full hd? they even don't look at good meaning it also get uploaded at a lower bit rate, so why even recording in 4k if you can record in a higher bitrate in full hd and still has the same upload quality?

4K usually have the advantage for post-production teams when doing VFX like keying green screens, rotoscoping, adding & tracking elements, delete flaws or people out of big scenes and also zoom in if necessary because there are more points, details, sharp edges to cut or track.
