Dude actually apologized to us as baseball fans for handling his own business, weighing a pivotal life decision towards finding his next destination as a generational player. @@Schweini_1983 : Why though? If the argument is the one made by Brad Pitt in Moneyball about "rich teams, poor teams, fifty feet of crap, and the A's," you could make that case about nearly every North American major sports league. And it's not like the Dodgers wrangled the contract deferment out of Ohtani, he chose it as he wants to win and have a team around him capable of winning. And I say all this as a Diamondback fan without much of a dog in this fight.

You're such a great dad. Ohtani staying in a huge market that has a very diverse community is the right call for him. It's also a huge money maker for tv rights and merchandise for the Dodgers. Anyone who went to an Angels game since he's been there can see how many sponsors were from Japan.

Also at the same time it’s a big win for the dodgers. From a finance 101 perspective, $1 dollar today is always worth more than $1 dollar tomorrow (due to inflation and ‘opportunity cost’). It’s the basic concept of the time value of money. What this means is that it allows the dodgers to take advantage of the available funds to them now to save up for more expensive players, while also capitalising on the revenue from the Ohtani’s popularity with global fans and advertising BEFORE the next 10 years - ultimately making it the best deal both parties could have while building a winning team. Events like this will change the history of baseball and it’s probably what’s needed to make it more popular again.

Let's focus on what "Del Tufo" said about "Advertising". Name ONE Japanese company that WON'T WANT TO ADVERTISE AT DODGER STADIUM.. On Dodger RADIO, Dodger Billboards, Dodger TV broadcast. The Dodgers will be hiring a team of Japanese speaking market sales people and I honestly think, they will make "50 Million dollars a year". Japan is a wealthy country.. Ohtani is their GOLDEN BOY in the countries favorite sport. My goodness.. I lived near Tokyo (in Yokosuka) in 2006'-2008' and they love to advertise. Now those Japanese companies will have the ADDED benefit of Ohtani being paired with the DODGERS... I think the Dodgers GM and executives.. those who crunch numbers.. will make a NET PROFIT of 300 MILLION in the next 10 years.

I don't know what the Jays offered but suspect it was the same or close to the Dodgers offer. I saw a report that the Giants owner claimed they offered the same amount to Ohtani (though a fan said he was sure that's a lie). I think Ohtani was choosing between the Jays and the Dodgers as he mulled it over on that Friday night when he said he made his final decision. It's obvious that money isn't a priority for Ohtani.

BUT, jersey advanced orders are faster than they can make it 😂 700 million is peanuts compared to $355 MILLION (2023) a year of Ohtani sales revenue for the Dodgers. That $355 Million of last year will be easily hands down, surpassed by Dodger fans, NEW Dodger fans and international Shohei fans. Imagine a conservative estimate of $400 Million sales X 10 years = $4 Billion Ohtani sales revenue $4,000,000,000 😊 over $700 M

It didn't work out, but I'm glad they at least tried to keep Ohtani. Also their owner is notorious for squeezing every single dollar out of their farm system from the moment he took over, which is probably related to them having the worst rated farm system multiple times over the last 20-ish yrs, so what's the likelihood they could have developed any prospects?

I became a Pirate fan during the 1960 World Series. Listening to the games in my 6th grade class. It was a treat we earned by having a great day of lessons. Also, these were obviously day games. When Maz hit THE home run it sealed the deal for me. Pirates are my team. What broke the bond was the repeated giving up of hope and then players on a regular schedule that is tied to the clubs payroll. I don't have to list the gory mess taking place over the years. The same lame excuses blah, blah, freaking blah. Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen were the last straw. I stopped watching or caring about baseball. I missed it though. So I said to myself, "self, find a new team." So, I did. One that had a history of great players who actually are paid to win. The past few years saw the influx of great players to the team not getting great and leaving. A Mookie (he got paid). A Freddie (he got paid). Now a Shohei, and boy did he ever get paid. They have a management and ownership that actually seems to want the best for the community, their fans and the players. I will always think that Roberto Clemente is the greatest right fielder to play the game. I miss the Buccos but I am now happy to be back. I am excited about the upcoming season. YES!!!

It’s a reference to Bobby Bonilla’s deal with the Mets when they cut him. Rather than pay him the ~$6 million they owed him, they agreed to pay him > $1 million/year until 2035, even though he retired in 2001. It’s a spectacularly bad deal for the Mets and a running joke in baseball.

@@PaulMcElligott thank you for the context! Why would a team pay someone more than 1 mil/year rather than just pay him out ?
@PaulMcElligott

@@ZacharyJohnGBecause their owner was an idiot. The money to pay him immediately was tied up in Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, but the owner figured the returns from that investment would more than cover the payments to Bonilla. As an aside, every July 1, the day Bonilla receives his money, is a sort of sarcastic holiday for Mets fans, “Bobby Bonilla Day.”

My reaction was basically. Ohtani. went. to. a. team. that. won. the. world. series. 3. years. ago. How. exciting. I. can. barely. contain. my. excitement. Anyone asking "what is that voice" it was basically an emotionless voice akin to a sorethroat voice. I'm not angry, I'm just severely disappointed that it isn't just the owners that only care about money. Players are going where the money is instead of where they'll make the most impact.

the collective baseball world is salty cus their team didn't land ohtani - no buts or ifs about it. the contract is a bargain - Ohtani's lure pays for itself... AND MAJORITY of his contract is deferred - that means anywhere between 400-600 million is deferred. Dodgers are making bank for the next 10 years and EVERY OTHER BASEBALL TEAM's fan is salty they couldnt land him - don't blame the Dodgers for having a competent organization - tell yours to do better. Don't blame Ohtani for getting the bag and a comepetitve team - he's been a dodger fan for all his life and he made his dreams come true.

The angel's reported they use to make 25million off ohtani a year..so lets low ball it and say dodgers can make 30million a year. so they only paying ohtani 40million out of pocket to be a 20million hitter and 20million pitcher..i put money on it right now. ..Dodgers are gonna have some talk with ohtani to see if he's open to goin to the outfield if he can no longer pitch..which will basically paying Aaron judge money..

Not taking a shot and Ohtani or having a go, but post UCL tear he will likely never pitch consistently again. 700 million is a bit much for just his bat as good as it is.

This contract is extremely dangerous for baseball. MLB needs to stop things like deferred payments because it is such an unfair practice and it prices out all the competition in a very underhanded way. Fight me on it if you want. This is bad for the game.
