Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has apologised to the victims of the infected blood scandal, saying it was a "day of shame for the British state".
Mr Sunak said the scandal should have been avoided as he gave a statement in the House of Commons after the publication of the Infected Blood Inquiry's final report.
The document blamed "successive governments, the NHS, and blood services" for failures that led to 30,000 people being "knowingly" infected with either HIV or Hepatitis C through blood products - around 3,000 of whom have now died.

No, the shame falls on the companies who supplied the contaminated blood products, the NHS, and the politicians who failed to call it out and stop it... repeatedly.

It started in the early 1970s... I doubt many people initially involved are still alive, and yes it lasted 20 years, so people would be in there 80s and 90s by this point

@arfgrogue5735
@arfgrogue5735 13 күн бұрын
This started as early as 1970 to 1990... so the people initially involved are most likely dead now. And for once, the current people within the government would also not be to blame since it ended over 30 years ago, current MPs in place would not have had the role they're in now. So unless ur suggesting stripping the titles of dead people or people in their 90s, your response to this would end in vain.

The greater shame is that the government is taking no steps to investigate the manifest problems relating to covid vaccines, which could easily be as needlessly tragic as the blood scandal. Will we have to wait another two or three decades for that day of shame?

@@alexanderde-sowah857it starts in 70s but the NHS continued to infect people right up to the late 1990s. That's how they killed 3,000 of us. I was infected in 1974 but in 2024 I'm lucky to be here. So it didn't start or end in the 70s and there are some reports that the harvesting of blood from sick donor's in American prisons continues to this day. The German government is very concerned about Bayer blood derived products and their safety.

Is US accountable for providing tainted blood and destroying lives globally? In 1980, my father was given a tainted blood transfusion at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas during heart bypass surgery. He immediately turned yellow in intensive care and suffered for decades until his death. Houston Methodist Hospital admitted error, but refused all accountability. He was abandoned without treatment and left on his own to suffer without care. Will the UK hold US accountable for tainted blood?

The NHS didn't know until it was too late. The execs at Bayer knew it was contaminated and pulled it from the US market and dumped it across Europe and Japan to turn a profit on a product that they couldn't get away with selling in the states. Their own internal memos proved they knew all about it.

What a utter shameful thing to happen to anyone especially when this is a first world country with state of the art screening facilities unlike third world countries that do not have the facilities to screen the blood properly . This was preventable and the government of the time is largely to blame going back to the 1970’s in the failure of funding for the NHS staff and facilities

How can it be calculated how many died? How can it be calculated how many infected? How can they be paid when Great Britain doesn't have the solvency to do so? How many times was HIV passed on through sex, or given to the unborn from mothers, with someone wrongly blamed? Who knew tainted blood was mixed with clean blood? Who can be held accountable for something that happened 30 years ago?
