Lukas was actually a child actor. At 3 years old he was cast in a beloved family movie trilogy called Krummerne (which was amazing). He did some voice acting too as he got older before switching to music.

I always took the message of this song to mean that he came from humble beginnings without much money (not going shopping or travelling and people giving them hand-me-downs plus only getting shoes once a year) as a result as is the case many times unfortunately, he was picked on for it. So he is almost questioning his parents as to why he doesn’t have what other kids have. His parents answer is that although they are not rich in money, they are rich in love as a family. There is also a message of positive reinforcement that it is ok the life they have. They have somewhere to sleep, they have food to eat, they are loved and are well mannered and morally sound kids. Reflecting back as an adult, he sounds very grateful that he did have the love of good parents that encouraged his Hollywood dreams even if the other kids didn’t. The expensive clothes and other material objects wouldn’t have served him in being able to make it as an actor and a musician. The love, morals, manners and encouragement to follow dreams would and clearly did. Always loved this song. It very much resonates with me.
