On Jim Starlin's 1991 Marvel event series, "The Infinity Gauntlet," the inspiration for Avengers: Infinity War and a tale of how the power of godhood in the hands of Thanos causes a power-mad villain to question everything he thought he knew about himself.

Jim Starlin was one of the writers at marvel who could go the most buck wild with the crazy cosmic shit but have it totally work thematically, at least most of the time.

This one was my first-ever big crossover story, sort of my Crisis On Infinite Earths. It always struck me that Thanos was always the true protagonist of the story while Adam Warlock was the antagonist. Even more uncomfortably, both characters were the flip side of how good and evil in comics are usually portrayed. Thanos bludgeons his opponents with raw power while struggling with his inadequacies while Warlock (whose name originally meant "oath-breaker") casually manipulates and checkmates his allies and opponents alike in the name of a greater good. Infinity War, I truly hope, will have that same sort of insight into Thanos.

This is fantastic analysis! I completely agree with your interpretation of their roles in the narrative. I’m hoping that Thanos is a complex character in the film, but I haven’t seen any of that in the trailers, so I’m not sure what they will do with him. But it will easily make the film better if he’s a layered character like in this comic.

I loved Thanos Quest, Infinity Gauntlet not as much 'till the end, it kind of felt like the heroes where just gadget addition to the story to remind us that this take place in the Marvel Universe, most instrumental figures to the plot being relatively obscure characters becoming popular through the event at hand. I've seen Thanos come back in the comics here and there I didn't have the occasion to pick up the more recent stories and I don't know why or how he leaves his farming retreat but it didn't felt really right tu bring him back as his usual death loving power hungry villain after the closure he got at the end of Infinity Gauntlet.

Starlin is releasing his final Thanos project for Marvel sometime this year, it will be the last of a 3 graphic novel set he has been releasing since last Spring: Infinity Siblings, Infinity Conflict and the rumored last title of Infinity Ending. 13:30 On a side-note that's Gamora not Nebula.

I loved this comic along with the Thanos Quest and Adam Warlock comics written by Jim Starlin. Alot of people think that Thanos merely did this just to appease death, but his character in regards to his utter nihilism is more in search of purpose and certainty in regards to his conclusions about the void. Its interesting how both Thanos and Adam Warlock are characters locked in existential crisis. Thanos in my observations is obsessed with idealized versions of concepts like death, love, etc but realizes through his obtaining omniscience and omnipresence that power doesn't create meaning and he isn't as strong as he thinks he is. Its interesting at the end of Infinity War comic when Thanos saves Adam from his Magus personality, Death arrives and comments if he kills Adam Warlock she will give him the love he so desires, in which Thanos weighs his respectful friendship/ rivalry with Adam Warlock and refuses. It was nice when Starlin tried to expand on the character from someone who was obsessed with power to a character trying to find his meaning. Keith Giffen and Ron Marz tried to do this by exploring Thano's journey for knowledge and redemption. Thanks for the video. Great stuff.

The movies missed the point with the Snap. The point wasn't that he was able to wipe out half of all life, the point was that all it took was a snap of his fingers. In the movies they make it look like a struggle to do it which goes against the whole point.

@@cardboard_hat In the comics it's quite simple. Thanos pines for the physical incarnation of death in the universe. And is willing to do anything if it would mean gaining her affection. In the movies it's driven by a more impassioned battle to prevent other worlds and pretty much the entire universe from suffering the same fate Titan had. Which was simply a case of extreme overpopulation, and the Mad Titan having been shaped by his trauma from losing his entire world felt the only way to prevent such a tragedy from happening on a universal scale was to simply cull half of life as a whole to stop the overconsumption. Now eternals kind of takes a bigger jab with that, because the movie explores how there is a Celestial fetus embedded in the Earth, and that if it were not for intervention from Thanos, the fetus would have completed its gestation cycle and then emerge from Earth as a newly-formed Cosmic entity and the emergence would effectively tear the planet asunder killing everything on it. And there's a lot of speculation saying that he knew about this threat once he had the stones and basically tried to hit the snooze button on the celestial emerging. At any cost. That was their way of trying to help explain why simply doubling resources in the universe wouldn't help because that would only speed up the clock and likely result in galactic overconsumption of resources that much faster

Infinity Gauntlet has the benefit of being a self contained story allowed to freely explore its own chosen themes that nothing else was building towards nor building out of, whereas Infinity War and Endgame needed to be the culmination of past stories and a conclusion to a long running storyline while trying to tie into the story it's adapting albeit loosely. It needed to satisfy the arcs of a handful of protagonists at once whereas the book quite literally uses ALL those characters as simple chess pieces while focusing exclusively on Thanos. Those movies were doomed to be a bit of a mess in terms of focused storytelling but for what they were intended to be I feel like they did a damn good job.

I never understood why the MCU didn't adapt the comics closer. The comics focused so much on Thanos himself as a character, showing the burden it took to even have that power, I liked Infinity War, but it felt like they had gone out of their way to change every little detail, including the color of the gems themselves.

Brother, this is just fantastic stuff. I'm really hoping you do a philosophy segment on Dr. Manhattan's psyche since Geoff Johns' "Doomsday Clock" maxiseries is (in my opinion) our generation's "Watchmen." So far the comic is a modern art masterpiece. Even my lit professor believes that if the writing is strong enough when Superman has a conversation with Dr. M about optimism and cynicism, about hope and despair... All I'm saying is, the comic is bound to be taught by scholars, so it'll only make sense if someone (you) took a leap and provided a layout for that future front so that the teachers of tomorrow have a video that dissects Frank's and Johns' DC in some way. Ideas for videos: - Dissecting Dr. Manhattan's philosophy/psychology - Analyzing Chapter 9 of Watchmen - Exploring the heroic physics of Superman and optimism Anyway, keep up the great work. This is amazing.

I'm a little confused, Thano's had the gauntlet for a brief moment of time, at least much less than Adam Warlock has, yet he knows the truth that godhood is beyond any mortal. Yet you then say that Adam Warlock doesn't understand this yet? Obviously, he does. Just because Thanos, or any other being with selfish motivations, cannot hold the power of godhood its clear that Adam Warlock can, otherwise he who lives in all times at once would realize his own fall as well. Seems to dispute the crux of the video.

xToxicInferno There is one critical difference between Adam and Thanos. The former is an artificial being, created by scientists he judged unworthy. So technically he's not actually mortal like Thanos and his existence outside the usual rules gives him his different perspective. Oh and he died a couple of times before this story started, once in Jesus fashion.

Also, if you remember Nebula only whished things, like she had a genie at her service. That made me think that the conection with the gems only goes as deep as the wielder allows it. She just comands them, Thanos is aware only of his proximity and when usurpies Eternity's place he is not really prepared for omniscience. Warlock suposedly is, at least for this story, since in the inmediate secuel, the "Warlock and the Infinity watch" series, the living tribunal makes him divide the gems among other wielders.
