6 months ago, I bought a like new, one owner, 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis from a private seller, for $10,000 cash. It had 36,000 actual miles on it. These are 400,000 mile+ cars if properly maintained and not abused. It came with a stack of maintenance receipts. The only thing I could find wrong (I am a recently retired lifelong mechanic) was that it needed new windshield wipers. You need to stay away from really late model vehicles for two reasons. One, they are complete JUNK, and two, despite that, they are the ones with the crazy high prices.

It is getting harder and harder to find a nice accident free vehicle that is clean inside and out, no maintenance lights, for 5k or less. Some high risk vehicles like anything with a Nissan CVT, dodge 2.4L, traverse/enclave and other junks can be bought. But by the time you pay fees and basic reconditioning you won’t make any money. The other issue is, these customers coming in wanting the 5k car, expect a 2014 or newer with 80-120k miles. They won’t buy an 07-11 car. They are actually the pickiest buyers. Way pickier than my 10-15k dollar buyers. So I am at the point where I don’t even talk to those customers. They are high risk, tight financially, and one mechanical problem away from blaming you for losing their job due to having no car.

The problem is with some of these vehicles is people run them off the manufacturer oil change intervals which is too much in between oil changes. Ive seen better success with these if you change oil every 3k-5k with a quality full synthetic oil (not pennzoil or quakerstate) and a good filter. Now thats not the cure for all these makes and models just some.

For almost 25 years, our Rotary club had an auction. Two of the three local car dealers would donate an older, decent running car or van for us to auction. We would usually sell them for $2500-$3500 each, sometimes more, sometimes less. Of course, Covid put an end to the auction but one dealer did donate a car in 2021 which the club sold on-line for about $4,000. Now, when 12 year old Corollas with 130,000 miles on them are selling for $6,000 or more, the dealers just can't afford to donate to us. The cars just aren't there.

There are dependable cars for 4-6K. You just need to know what to buy. Older Camry's like 04-10, Corolla early 2000s to 2010 and 05-07 and 08-11 Ford Focus are super reliable. The Focus can be had for 4k or a bit more for a real good car. You just have to look around. The auction and car lots might not be the place to look. Look at CL or other and search owner only o dealer. They exist. Not to pound dealers you and a few others are really good. Even CQA has 4-5k cars that are dependable.

The only thing that's holding vehicle prices on the $5,000 to $15,000 price up right now is tax refunds. Once the refunds are gone the market will dry up for awhile except for those who have accidents, repos or have major work to be done with their present vehicle that have no choice but to buy a different vehicle. It's getting harder to get auto loans unless a person has stellar fico scores, guaranteed income and tremendous income to debt ratio for those seeking financing. Should be a decent month or two on sales.
@gimne

It’s going to stay there, interest rates are going down which means people who have been holding off to buy cars will buy and since prices have come down since last year even increases it.
@glenshepard6960
@glenshepard6960 6 ай бұрын
@gimne the rates might go down some later. As I mentioned, they will have to meet the criteria with the bank to get a loan. Plus, it's possibly as much as 30% down payment. Maybe more depending on the loan and the loan institution. The fed could lower rates a couple of times this year, maybe a quarter percent each time. Only time will tell. Used car interest rates are high and depending on the loan institution, the creditworthiness of the borrower, and the length of the loan.

I recently bought a car for $2,700. It is a 2004 Toyota Carolla CE. It required exactly $0 to be Safety Certified. Runs perfectly. At this moment in time there are several good cars for sale here in Barrie, Ontario for under $6,000CDN.

Priced Mopar SRT, R/T, 300C and Hellcat cars in my area on Autotrader earlier today. Most were priced at or below MSRP with some exceptions. I bought my 300S new nearly 4 years ago from a dealer in another state, so I've relied on a local dealer for service and warranty work. Sadly, my experiences with the local dealer in question (one of six) has been poor at best, an understatement. I also noticed the dealer in question had all of their Mopar performance cars priced well above MSRP. None of the local dealers have a good reputation for competent service I'm hearing, trying a different dealer at the next opportunity.

To your point I got a 2006 GMC Canyon 4X4 that had 112,000 miles for $8,000. It had a lot of issues that they didn’t want to deal with, I put around $5,000 in parts and fixing it myself. Has ran perfectly for the almost 30,000 miles I’ve put on it. Gonna ride it out till the wheels fall off, but yeah finding sub 8,000 vehicles with nothing wrong is an impossibility I feel unless you know someone. Maybe estate sale.

To find your target vehicle (under $6K, reliable, etc) you might have to look toward something like a Toyota Yaris 1.5L (hatchback or sedan). You can find many that fit the bill, although far from exciting. Those little cars can last nearly for ever.

Do not kid yourself. It is the buyer that determines the market, not the seller. That and the loan companies. If dealers are selling cars higher than a bank will finance, then that dealer will eather be sitting on their vehicles ,losing money or have to drop the price. The money grab at the dealer is done. People cannot even afford the car loans they have now. Expect to see an influx of junk, beat up Repos no one will buy, and banks demanding more for these vehicles to recoop their loses. As a buyer, you know these vehicles will glut the auctions. No one is going to buy them.

I think that dealers will be forced to come back down on their prices over time. Prices will likely never go all the way back down to pre-pandemic prices, but they still have a ways to come back down yet. That old saying that prices go up like a rocket and down like a feather. We have certainly passed the up like a rocket phase, and are slowly coming back down to earth now. It’ll take time, and the tax season will certainly skew numbers. But in my opinion we’ve still got a ways to come down.
