I was a TWA flight attendant from 1968-1977.......LAX&SFO.........Best memories, unforgettable moments, and the time of my life! I will always be proud of that occupation and learned so much. Flying was a very different experience then. Passengers dressed up to fly, were pleasant, and security measures as we know them today were unheard of......Sherryl Weber......

Wow! That must have been an absolutely amazing experience. My mom worked for DL in the mid 70s, and that truly was great time to fly.

I was a TWA flight attendant from 1977 until the very last day, July 2, 2003. I loved it and it sure made a grown up of me! And I absolutely remember what I was wearing for my interview. I was 19!

@@mywingedwords : You certainly were very lucky to have been hired by TWA as back then it was a fine airline for sure! It did start to deteriorate towards the end but that was bound to happen as its management was inept. Today, the flying experience has completely changed. The flight attendants are rude fat n lazy and nothing like they used to be in the 60s 70s and 80s! to be honest the airline clientele has changed as well and are as uncouth as the flight attendants are. The classiness of the profession is long gone now!! :(

Love the landing and takeoff shots of the TWA Boeing 707. TWA last used the 707 on October 31, 1983. The aircraft on that date was TWA 707-331B, N18710 departing from JFK Airport (Idlewild, N.Y.) and arriving at Chicago and finally Kansas City.

I remember in early '80's SeaTac airport had a lady agent or attendant that refuse to wear makeup! 💄 That actually made the news! Ugh how times have changed!✈️

Even though TWA isn't around, I think most airlines still use the same process. They get a plan for routes, expansion, consolidation, and new aircraft being brought into service all based on an annual budget for the year that is often distributed in January so February the Airline will start looking for aircraft additions to the fleet. So in March is when they start interviewing for training classes starting in April, May, June, and July. Flight attendants are hired for every airline purchase such as a 737-800 which is configured with 162 passengers (PAX) 1 Flight Attendant(FA) per every 50 seats (or exceeding more than a multiple of 50. 205 rolls to 250 means 5FA's on every flight of that 205 seat plane) So 162 = 4FA's thinking about most airplanes run 18-20 hours every day. 20*7=140*4.333333=606/30=20 FA's Needed for that 1 Aircraft. 20 hrs per day for the plane *7 days in a week * 4.33333 weeks in a month divided by 30 (common hours worked "on clock" per month) equals 20 FA's per month. This is a minimum number. Airlines add extra FL's to account for weather leaving a plane short a FA or other delay causing the flight crew to not be at the airport when needed. So then a reserve FA is called up to cover the flight if one is available at the present location. But you get the idea, there are a lot of people needed to be able for the aircraft to just get off the ground.

This is amazing. I was hired with TWA in 86 barely out of High School. I was laid off in 91 and went to American where I still am at. My passion for this job gets stronger I get older, TWA was the best. I remember my interview. and even in the 80s you had to be attractive. Today it does not matter how you look. And that is good. Calling some one unattractive is not nice at all. But TWA helped me so much. I was so young then my parents had to fly to St Louis on the weekends and buy me grocery's. TWA invested a lot of time patience and effort with me. They where very supportive in training . They where the best,, Eastern made a come back. I wish TWA would

I agree TWA was the very best ever. I was slightly senior to you and enjoyed every minute of my career. It was the best job and career one could ever hope for. It is not quite the same anymore but it is still a very valid and important career. I get what you were saying about dealing with the senior flight attendants. Sometimes I feel they would just act that way to test the new hires. Glad you are still flying, I for one appreciate all the hard work as I know it is not an easy or unimportant job because it is a great career. Fly safe and careful and keep on keeping on, it is and will be what you make it to be. Enjoy your career, there are many great benefits that come with it.

I had a friend interview for TWA in the mid 70's. She was nervous going in and her ,(male not that it matters) interviewer made it worse. First thing he said to her was, " are you willing to change your hair and fix your teeth?" Next told her to walk across the room, turn, walk back. Like a model on a runway. Then proceeded to ask her how tall she was. She assumed because she had platform shows on. Her hair was curly, but not umkempt. Her teeth were ok, just not Christy Brinkley straight and porcelain white. However, in no way grotesque. Slight overbite, nothing noticably bad, and teeth not corn kernel yellow. She told me her nerves got worse after what he said to her. She felt completely humiliated, on the verge of tears. Alas, she blew the interview. Completely. Never got the job. Yes, back then they wanted almost model perfection in looks. If you were blonde, blue eyed, porcelain skin, Christie's teeth , you were IN. I had another friend interview for TWA Walked in, the interviewer took one look, told her, she was in, see you next interview. Just to lighten her brown blonde hair more. No questions asked! She was 5'7" and 118 lbs. She got the job. Yes, it was discriminating back then..they looked for a certain , "type". If you didn't fit the bill, quick interview, shown the door .the weight restrictions were tough. Alot were on diet pills and diurectics. Weighed before and after flights. If you weighed over, I think 3x you were fired I'm so glad times changed! So much more diversity now. However, if your blonde, thin, blue eyed, still you have a jump on the rest .

I was TWA Flight attendant. from 1986-1991 then went to American in 91 as I enjoy my life long career to this day. I just want to say that I was 18 years old when I got on during the strike. I was a kid and did not have situational awareness time. I just want to say to the older Flight Attendants at the time. I did not appreciate being bullied. I was a kid. A senior FA at the time spoke out and told some Flight Attendants to back off because I was young and pass the torch on. At 53 I now understand obviously. I am stating this because I have never experienced nor expected verbal violence and borderline threats from people in this industry. TWA was the best airline in the world and you all where lucky. Any one of us can get fired at any time and we are replaceable instantly in this field. Many Flight Attendants think they have a entitlement. That is wrong. Think about all the other qualified people who never made it. They count. Your represented TWA thank you. I hope your proud of your selves.

Today they can not require by stating that applicants must be attractive. I notice back then there was too much emphasis on service and not enough on safety. I think safety really started even bigger roll after 9-11. I recall the candidates in my class where all attractive women and men. I was a very good looking 18 year old at the time. Many people that did not have the blessing of physical beauty where rejected. I felt that was cruel at the time also. I am a FA manager and recruiter. I have never favored any one based on there looks or age. Even if I knew the person , If I felt they where not a good fit for the job I would not hire them. The videos on line are intentionally put up by the airlines to distract people so when they go the the interview and training process they are caught off guard. This is done in order to determine who is qualified. I always like talking to Flight Attendants and it is safer on line because I can remain anonymous as a manager while trying to help people.

Hardly. Flight attendants are one of the few occupations that can never be replaced by technology. No matter how safe flying gets, there will always be a risk that something will go wrong, and the primary function of the flight attendant is to preserve human life when it does. No two air crashes are the same, and so a computer can't be relied on in the same way that human initiative can to arrange the best outcome in an unfamilar circumstance. So even though you think it's 'outdated', flight attendants will be around as long as commercial airlines are.
