Welcome to my journey.
Today's video is was inspired by the personal finance lessons that I have learnt through my time as a creator about money and also advice that I have given to my younger siblings who are in the film and entertainment industry and earn in a similar way to creators in certain aspects. If anything, I want you to take this as encouragement to become a creator whilst protecting yourself against the potential financial risks 🤍

I love you guys! Thank you so much for all the positive comments, I was actually quite nervous about publishing this video because it's quite different from my usual style and I really wanted it to come across in as something positive and not negative - so thank you for actually taking the time to watch through the video Side note: If you see random blurs in the video, KZfaq studio is not trying to cooperate with me! I didn't realise my mic would pull on my top, but we are mainly girls here anyways nothing new here 😅

I honestly believe it’s good to have various ways of income. Having a 9-5 as your main source of income then have a few other things you do to earn money. There should be a balance but this video was great

Thank you! And yeah I would agree that regardless of what your main stream of income is, it’s always good to diversify for your own protection. Im all for people taking their passions full time though, we wouldn’t have a lot of the great creators that we know today if they weren’t full time but even then as you said, it’s worth striking a balance with some other streams of income too

Agree with this, as someone who known quite a Few creators. My advise is for them to use their current big income to start a business and also invest income producing assets such as property and dividend paying stocks

Having multiple streams of income is important. Especially when it comes to passive income streams.

Fully agreed, and that's something that I was thinking about lately. It's not easy to stay "hot" and trending online all the time, especially when you're not a celebrity who drops music, act in movies, or a reality star (even for them it's not that easy). It's funny that you mention Jackie Aina and Patricia Bright because while they're doing well right now, I'm really curious to see what their career will look like in a decade when they'll be in their forties, which is still young in real life, but "old" online, especially as there are always more creators coming up. The difference between a 9-5 is that provided you're decent at your job and you don't have any medical/ family situation that makes you quit, you will still be able to get money through whatever you're qualified for, even if you don't have a thousand of income sources. But creators, and by extension, anyone in the entertainment industry don't have that stability. The money can be EXTREMELY good but if the public starts losing interest and the gigs dry up, then that's it for them. There are celebrities that I see on the red carpet that may be famous, but who I often wonder if they're truly making bank. Same for influencers. The reality is that if they're not constantly working, then they probably don't earn as much as people think. Last year's strikes (actors and writers) happened for a reason. Also, what people don't realise is that the more you earn, the more you spent (e.g., say you have kids, you will almost certainly send them to very expensive private schools, your home will bigger but also more expensive...etc). In addition, if you're famous, it means that you have to maintain your look. It means spending a huge amount of money on dermatologist, facialist, botox/ minor cosmetic adjustments, fitness trainer, dietician, make-up artists when going to event, nails, hairstylist to have healthy hair and for events, stylists, and that's without talking about the part of your pay that goes to your agent/ PR/ manage, It's a lot of money, but people are surprised when celebrities/ influencers keep on working despite health issues/ old age or when they sign up on any gigs that comes their way.

Lifestyle Inflation is so real especially when you need to maintain a certain lifestyle as part of your brand! with Jackie & Patricia even if the influence declines they still have businesses/investments which they should be able to fall back on. It’s like with the example I gave of Caspar, he doesn’t post at all & is doing very well financially. I think what will be interesting as well is seeing what happens as the audience ages too, now it seems strange for 40yr olds to be influencers but in 10 years time a lot more of social media users will be 40 too so that might translate positively but only time will tell I guess 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m not sure about Patricia - I think most of her money now comes from her investments and real estate rather than online. Jackie Aina has pivoted to IG but is using that to promote her own candle brand rather than others. It’s important to see that the OG KZfaqrs aren’t even making money from creating anymore they are making it from business / investments

im very happy for them. content reation was their visual resume and it allowed them to pivot into something else that is sustainable for them in this new phase. when Austin mcbroom mentioned that he wanted to pass his channel off to his kids I legit laughed, even I knew that it would be impossible trends change so much, he's essentially passing off debt or something that isnt as valuable anymore.

Great video 🙂I definitely agree about content creators who should invest in more traditional offline avenues. I started my own channel and while I don't know where this will lead me, I also invest in more traditional assets that don't require my personality or image. At the end of the day, it is all about enjoying the journey and learning as we move forward. I do like the stability of my 9-5 job so definitely a balance is needed.

Love your work Lamide ❤ I think surviving the 9-5 vs Creator economy is about being agile and diverse. The 9-5 route is equally volatile with many job losses and, cut backs across industry due to disruptive and rapid technology advacement. The shift towards a 'porfolio career' will become the new norm for many people across the world. Where building personal brand, diversifying your skillset and service to the work place, community will be a necessity. Existing creators in the creator economy are learning how to pivot and spot trends early.

I like what you said about risk; deciding to be a creator full time is a risk and just like any other financial decision it's important that we discuss the pros and cons so that people can make informed decisions. Really enjoyed your deep-dive into this topic

Hey Lamide, this fundamentally is the lesson of the book ‘who moved my cheese’. This video shows you’re very reflective and strategic in your thinking. One life lesson, I always remind myself is ‘Move’ & ‘Change’. Anyone who gets too comfortable with where they are is bound to be ousted or overtaken. Keep being an inspiration ❤ @LamideElizabeth

Such a good video and you made a great point about all that money being made in a specific time frame so it’s best to amortize it or start a business that doesn’t involve your face/you being physically present to make $$.

As a coach I tried B to C using social media and the overhead of commitment to understanding social media outlets was too much. I ditched it went back to traditional sales in B to B coaching for companies. The income is steady and I have my mind back and my socials and my work are delightfully separate.

I think lots of creators found it easy to make big money with lack luster or sub par content, but times have changed and the hustlers and go getters have upped their game and this market is over saturated. I see so many influencers that are lazy and their vlogs are not consistent and the content is boring and not informative at all.

It’s definitely become more competitive to become a successful influencer, barriers to entry as so low especially with platforms like TikTok
