Thank you. This infrared heat paint removal is really one of the best ways and it is hard to find a demo online.

have you used infrared before? Compared to alternative paint stripping methods it's quite fast. One machine on this rail system can strip 14 foot runs in about 15 minutes. Add additional machines and the speed increases further. 👍

I'd be interested to know if you've or anyone else has used this for overhead stripping while standing on a ladder. All the demos I've seen (for the smaller Cobra model) show the heater being used while someone stood over a workpiece on a table or support. Even though I have some horizontal wood siding like yours, I am more interested in the smaller Cobra model because the worst parts of my scraping job involves small, boxed-in areas -- i.e., the rectangles created by the the intersection of the roof rafters and the cross beams under the front-porch roof. Next summer I'll be tackling the bakc-porch patio covering which is just a series of crossed beams and a LOT of rectangular spaces that need to be scraped and painted on the inside and outside.

Hi, yes due to weight, I use my Cobra for all overhead work, the 1100 is too heavy to hold for extended periods...hope this helps!

How would this rack work on a side of the house that has a sloped roof? Do you install the rack on a slope as well? Also, how does the rack attach tot he house siding? Screws?
@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke, yes the rail hangers screw to the highest point on the side of the house OR you could pop a few additional holes in the top of the Rail and mount it overhead to the soffit. The roller and vertical rod has a lot of range of motion in/out amd side to side so the work surface doesn't have to be perfectly flat - Check out the video and pictures where I have it mounted. 👍

Thanks for the video! After stripping would you still recommend some sanding, or do you think the scraping method provides the right amount of roughing up for the paint? Thank you.

Hi Mark, definitely some sanding (40/60 grit then 80 grit to finish) and general repairs. Best practices here - www.myoldhousefix.com/blog/exterior-paint-failure-9-critical-steps-long-lasting-paint

What if there's lead paint under there? @@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix 7 ай бұрын
@tjtewshews5531 I always assume that lead paint is present and take the following steps for lead safe work - cover the area in plastic to catch all lead paint removed, use infrared heat to strip paint (low heat won't vaporize the lead and it comes off in soft clumps vs dry dust cloud) , sand with HEPA dust collection sanders, and clean up with a HEPA vac. These tools and safety equipment are common around Old House work 👍@@tjtewshews5531

Will latex paint chip and peel like this over time, or just lead based?
@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix Жыл бұрын
not quite as bad because latest is more flexible, but it will dry out and crack over time. Also depends on the foundation primer. I use oil based primers still because they bond well with old, dry wood. So to some effect, this will happen with most paints, except linseed type paints.

No down time. Proceeds to wait for it to work.
@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix Жыл бұрын
No down time compared to the hand held method is correct. For the initial heating, of course you have to wait, but after that you are scraping while the tool is heating. If you have used these type paint strippers that are hand-held, then you already know that - you heat an area for one minute, put down the tool, scrape, pick up the tool, re-heat another minute, and repeat. This alternative is much more efficient. I should know because bith methods were applied when we stripped the entire exterior and repainted 👍

With new lead abatement laws, many "old house" contractors do use infrared paint strippers more now. I average 14 feet stripped in 15 minutes. Now, the hand-held method is slow.
@nathan3368
@nathan3368 2 жыл бұрын
Super slow process, I would personally use a mirka sander or similar with dust extraction to speed up the process
@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, there are multiple methods for paint removal, all with pros/cons...especially when lead-safe practices are involved. The hand-held method is definitely slow, which is what prompted me to build this hands-free attachment. For every 15 minutes, I can strip 14 ft.

correct, thats why proper PPE, respirators and paint removal methods such as Infrared are better options than dry removal that creates clouds of lead dust. 👍

@mick2spic 2 жыл бұрын
@@myoldhousefix I agree, it does seem like a cleaner method because you’re scrapping it all off. And it’s not coming off in dust. I’d like to see it work on siding with many thick layers of old paint, see if it can remove it all in one pass

Still seems laborious but might look into it as the heat gun method takes a long time.
@myoldhousefix
@myoldhousefix Жыл бұрын
@jaygee1979 to your point, the hand-held method is extremely slow as you cant hold the stripper and scrape at the same time.It gets heavy, fast. That's why I built the InfraRed Rack. It enables you to heat while you scrape. I can strip 14ft clapboards in about 15 min, each. I've been using Speedheater tools for 12 years now. The Infrared heat won't vaporize lead paint amd is less fire prone vs a heat gun (convective forced heat).

This type of infrared paint stripper has been used for over 20 years here in the US. It's also the best option with dealing with lead paint abatement. Additionally, when paint is 50-100 years old, at some point, it has to be removed to get a quality paint job and make it last 15-20 years. Like a house, your paint job is only as good as its foundation. This hands-free system dramatically speeds up the paint stripping process. 2 units were used on my house to strip the entire exterior. For example, we stripped a run of 15 foot clapboard siding down to bare wood - 15 board feet stripped every 15 minutes. 👍
