This was filmed at La Scala in 1967 and how astonishingly beautiful Pavarotti sounded in those days amazes me every time I listen to this.

I was lucky enough to hear him while he was in his first innocent bloom. Although he continued to be magnificent there was a special quality in his early performances before the world had intruded as it always does with exceptional artists.

How young he and Karajan are. A lifetime has passed and for me it feel like only a few years. That world is gone. There are always competent singers, musicians, artists but now they are mostly tools of marketing for profit. Then it was about perfection, genius and artistry. There were true Divas and Maestros. Now just performers and mass production. .

What a great singer he was . He could bring tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. To hear him live gave his voice an extra dimension. When I saw him in Boheme I sent a letter to say that the 16 of us who went to the ROH enjoyed the performance. A few days later 16 autographed photos arrived with a nice letter. We were all taken aback that LP had taken the time to do this. This was in 1975. Henry Webb

What a wonderful memory! I saw him in recital in Sarasota, FL twice - the first when he was young, before the great fame, but just after a lot of recording (Sutherland and the Requiem). I have the LP of this performance but it is wonderful to see him. He had the low range when written, but OH his top. And then, rare among tenors, he actually sings the pianissimos Verdi intended. He had voice and musicianship.

When he was singing in Philadelphia, I had an opportunity to play this early "Ingemisco" for him. He tended to be critical of his own performances, but he seemed pleased with this until the 3:12 timing mark, when he muttered "No! I make diminuendo for 'dextra' but I close 'ah' and sounds like 'oh.'" Only when he heard the final "in parte dextra" did he say, "See? Dex-TRAH. Is correct there."

His natural vibrato is just perfect. Some go over the top with theirs, but LP's is natural, never contrived or overblown for operatic effect. A lot of other tenors also sound like they're in a box while trying to make their voice opera-ish...but LP was a natural, like he was riding a bicycle. Had the fortune to see him live in 1998. He came out for five encores. Every jaw was dropped....no one wanted the evening to end.

And for those below spewing filth about size: while it's true that having the belly helps, it should be noted that in Pavarotti's early days, audiences expected him to sound terrible because he was "too thin to be a tenor." Find one of his 1963-66 recordings and tell me he sounds weak, or too quiet. The man could blow the doors out in a concert hall even then.

When coming to the high notes, you can see the endeavor in the face of many tenors. When watching Pavarotti, there is nothing - he just opened his mouth a litte mit more. You recognize the easiness of his perfomance, the notes just coming out of his mouth naturaly. That´s the difference.
