I could only imagine hearing this for the first time again. Man... this tune has been with me for decades. The only classic band that will never, ever reunite. No one ever thought the Pixies would, and they did, but I suppose there's not much hope for The Smiths. Tragic. They'd sell EVERY venue out in minutes all over the world. I enjoyed watching this, so thank you very much.

Someone who never gets his due credit: ANDY FUCKIN ROURKE. Marr's compositions would be nowhere near as good without Andy's bass lines. And Morrissey obviously is a fucking genius. His solo work is also brilliant, check out Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself from his masterpiece Vauxhall And I.

It's called Alliteration, a repetition of sounds to give it a rhythm or a cadence. In this case the sound of T: "if a Ten Tons Truck kills the both of us..." And is perfectly dropped in the beats. This song is amazing in so many ways. It's a kind of romanticism literature, with the presence of the death as something conscious, inevitable. The liberty and dying of or for love is the maximum aspiration.

The Smiths is very much a band that really benefits from experiencing them as a teenager in the 80s, especially if you felt like a bit of a loner or outsider. A lot of what you would now call "emo" kids felt Morrisey was speaking both directly to them, and about them.

One of my all-time favorite songs! I love The Smiths, and this is peak them! Morrissey is quite the character. I own two unused tickets to two different Morrissey shows that he claimed illness and canceled. He’s exhausting, and sometimes a d**khead, but that VOICE. Johnny Marr is the guitarist. Lightning in a bottle when those two met! I’ll share my favorite Morrissey exchange/quote: Interviewer: Have you heard t.a.t.u.’s cover of “How Soon Is Now?” Morrissey: I thought it was magnificent. Absolutely. Again, I don’t know that much about them. Interviewer: They’re the teenage Russian lesbians. Morrissey: Well, aren’t we all? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

"Ah, but I was so much older then \ I'm younger than that now" Bob Dylan, "My Back Pages" (1964) The Smiths made up a major part of the soundtrack my senior year of high school back in the 1980's. Flash forward thirty odd years and, as strange as it may seem, The Smiths remain quite popular among the Latino community in Los Angeles, California. There are even mariachi bands who play covers of their songs. "Catholicism, guilt, second-class citizen -- it's almost the same being an Irish descent in England, what it is of being Mexican or Mexican descent living in the United States," is what the singer from El Mariachi Manchester said about it in an interview six years ago. When you're ready for more from The Smiths, check out "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" or "This Charming Man" for super-smooth bass lines, "Bigmouth Strikes Again" or "What Difference Does It Make" for slick driving guitar jingle-jangles, and "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" for making two minutes feel like five in a good way.
