Tragically, an American Airlines ramp worker was killed when she was sucked into a jet engine. In this video I share with you what the "ingestion zone" is under a jet airliner and why following safety protocols is so important while working on the ramp.

Great video. People don't realize how much air is being pulled in when these things are running. If these engines can push a 200,000lb plane into the air, a human body is just a speck of dust in comparison. Thanks for sharing. RIP to the ramp worker.

I mean right in front of the blades….I think the buckle on a life vest or some sort of outerwear caught the Cowling. Hope he went to church the following Sunday…

She must've had some really upsetting thoughts going through her mind and was totally absent from the situation, walking on autopilot.. it's impossible to walk in front of an engine like that, even someone that isn't trained understands the danger and stays away from a running engine and checks if it's running or not before approaching it. When I'm unsure if an engine is running, I walk past it on the trailing edge, slowly. The worst it can happen is you feel the blowing hot air and step back. *I work on an airport too.

@42j

No it’s not impossible to walk in front of a turning engine. I worked at the airport as a fueled at CVG which is Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International airport and I served in the US Navy onboard the flightdecks of the USS Forrestal CV59 and the USS America CV66. I can tell you that by my experience you must always be aware of your surroundings when working around jet engines propellers and rotors whether they are turning or not. It is very easy to become complacent working around aircraft and safety is definitely on you and your willingness to be serious about working with and around aircraft. I was so vigilant that I knew the sounds of jet engines whether day or night and I could know if the plane turned and jet blast was headed my way because the jet exhaust would muffle the sound of the jet engines. I believe that the airlines do a great job training their ground crews but ultimately it’s all up to you to work safe because jet engines and other parts of jet or prop driven engine are very unforgiving and your life will be gone in 2 seconds of less. By the way I have seen my fair share of guys go sliding or flying around on the flight deck and 2 guys go overboard and survive the 90 foot drop into the ocean back in 1989-1992

The Ramp worker is placing the chocks walking behind the turbine, he should walk starting from the nose gear, and along the fuselage, to prevent any type of accident that’s the correct way to do it.

A lot of this unsafe behavior could be eliminated if the agents stopped staging cones and chocks at the wingtip location. At roughly 3:45 we see a ramp agent approach from the side. All of the chocks and cones should be kept at a position forward of the aircraft nose. That way, agents are forced to approach the engines head on. Therefore VISUALLY VERIFYING spool down. Approaching wing mounted engines from the side is utter stupidity!
@davidsmiths5471
@davidsmiths5471 Жыл бұрын
That would cut into off load times! Plus no one on a ramp is forced to do anything!! Plus if the ramp is doing things correctly! The Marshaller gives the okay to approach aircraft!

@@davidsmiths5471 How many death's are you ok with for "on time"? What is the IATA hand signal for, "Okay to approach the aircraft"? In the interest of self preservation, I'm not relying on anyone but me to visually verify engine "spool down". As a ramp safety auditor, I was able observe the deterioration of safe practices, not so much for "on time", but because people became lazy. You take shortcuts around running engines, you end up dead!
