@@mediocremaiden8883 you’ve forgotten that he was in Don’t Mess With the Zohan in 2008 and put on a bunch of muscle for the role. Plus we’ve already seen him swinging in Happy Gilmore. To me the casting makes perfect sense. Guess it was probably an availability issue.

It's very interesting that Aldo says "Dammit Hershberg" because remember, they only allow one survivor. And so he's not mad about killing him but rather about letting him die an easy death. Also there is some risk the last survivor would also die for country or not know the information or give them false information so shooting him should have happened afterward not before getting the info- but I like to think it's because Aldo didn't want to be done being an Apache.

@@brandong550 Seven out of every 10 nazis that died in WWII, died on the Eastern front. If you see what they did to the peoples of Russia and Eastern Europe, it's difficult to imagine any sympathy (especially if you imagine it being your mother, father, sisters, brothers being butchered in their homes by an invading army.) As an aside, 'The Unknown War' was a 20-part A&E documentary series from 1978. Before I watched it, I never realized that there was so much actual video footage of WWII. Most productions are remakes/reenactments or docu-dramas, or at best they might have a few pieces of footage that they simply replay over and over. I thought I had seen everything there was to see. Thousands of feet of film from both sides of the conflict had been stored, and it was the only time it was all released together. There wasn't a single episode that was boring or even uninteresting. But one thing's for sure, video footage can be very telling.

Props to your old man, my grandpa was in the Pacific Theater. But I 100% agree with you. There's some great scenes in this film but overall it left a bad taste in my mouth. I mean, what was Tarantino's intention here? The German NCO comes off as an honorable soldier who deserves respect. Our supposed protagonists feel more like serial killers than anything else.

@@BULL.173 None of the soldiers were SS, none of them were wearing Nazi party badges, just combat badges, and badges for bravery, so they were Whermacht. They also were all prisoners and no longer combatants. Killing them was out and out murder, and a war crime. No different than the murder of US POW's machine gunned at Malmedy. I understand the supposed good guys here had no way of handling POWs, so shooting them was really the only choice, but there was no honor here, and beating a POW to death was shameful.
@BULL.173
@BULL.173 10 ай бұрын
@@corbinhbucknerjr558 My gramps fought the Japanese and their overall disposition was often the polar opposite of the Germans. They hardly ever surrendered in the first place. And when they did it was still pretty dicey. In that respect the Japanese were a lot like the maniacs I had to deal with in Afghanistan. "Surrendering" usually meant they were playing possum. You had to be very VERY careful. If something felt wrong we did what we had to do. But even then, if an insurgent was disarmed and taken into custody we basically owned them. We were legally and morally obligated to see to their safety and well being. If they kept up their end of the bargain and behaved, we saw to their basic needs and never abused them. But unlike the Weremacht the insurgents in Afghamistan had zero honor yet we still always did our very best to be professionals. What bugs me about this scene in Inglourious Basterds is that I don't believe there is any nuance or subtext to it. Again, I can't understand what Tarantino wants from us (the audience) in this scene.

I love the nuance of this scene. The Nazi soldier doesn't show fear. He accepts his death like a man. This almost noble heroic music is playing as Donnie comes near. The line "bravery" frames him as a hero. Then it all goes away when the bat cracks him in the head. Donnie just beats his skull around like a polo ball. Fucking hilarious

I see Inglorious Basterds as kind of an anomaly. It has these brilliant vignettes that, on their own, contain some of QT's greatest directorial achievements. The prologue with Waltz and the French farmer WILL be remembered as one of the greatest scenes in film history. But a movie is the sum of all its parts. When I reconcile the ledger I've never felt Basterds adds up to a great film. Like this scene for instance. What exactly does QT want us to take away from all this? To feel empathy and respect for the god damn German? Because that's exactly how it comes off. Our supposed "good guys" look like serial killers, not soldiers.

@@HAPPYFUNTIMEx2 I hear you, but is that really what he intended? I'm not really sold on that. This feels more like killing as a means of achieving catharsis.

That's kinda the point. Ambiguity of righteousness and heroism is what war is. You inherently seem to have black and white views of righteousness and virtue being only attributed to the Americans. There were millions of German people who saw the German soldiers as just as righteous and virtuous at the time. And yes it was brutal and cathartic murder. It is a theme of the movie along with being tactical battle plans revealed earlier in the movie. Brutalize them and leave one to tell the tale to instill more fear in their enemy.
@BULL.173
@BULL.173 10 ай бұрын
@@andrewk7611 Cathartic to who? The audience or the sadists on the screen? My point is that I don't personally believe there was any real deeper meaning to the scene except to show a highly stylized murder of a POW. And no offense guy but I was kind of in a war myself so I'd be careful before proclaiming you know "what war is."

The Bar scene along with pretty much any scene with Landa are better than this scene. The Basterds were second, possibly third fiddle in a movie they headlined.
