The tiny details are just amazing. The serious glare on Landa's face in 2:05, turning into a serious frown, is the exact same facial expression Landa had at the beginning of the movie when he interrogated the French farmer and asked him "You're sheltering enemies of the state, are you not?". I'm sure that if he kept at it for just a bit longer, she would crack on the spot just like the French farmer, but he decided on having some fun since he knows the truth already. Waltz is such a great and intelligent actor. When he begins to burst in laughter it was as though he had been actually holding in the chuckles until he broke his grip. Thus making it more believable and his hysterical pop was that much more satisfying. Small details like this in a slew of multiple acts in his role here are what go a long way to building his performance.

At 1:40 I think Lada is asking von Hammersmark why she commited treason. The blank face after the question and Hammersmark's "hmm" give me the sense that they both know what's going on, and Hammersmark tries to excuse her behaviour by saying that she'll never do it again. I think the moment Lada begins laughing that hard is the moment she knows he knows and her mannerisms change from big gestures and smiles to more understated ones, so it would make sense for her to try and save her skin. She keeps the farce just for appearance until Lada says he's only joking, which she believes, perhaps attributing her lack in judgement to understandable paranoia. Just for it all to fall apart seconds later again. Maybe all of this is obvious, but I haven't seen anyone talk about it.
@xypher3213 жыл бұрын
Landa's hysterical laughter, to me, spoke of his disappointment. He knows that she was in Paris the day before, as that was when the pub shootout took place and her autograph was found. He expected her to pull out an extravagant and well thought out excuse, and she disappointed him. XD
