I will give my tips to be able to recover from stress fractures based on my experience. I suffered from a stress fracture about 1 year ago.. it turns out that the main cause is because my calves and ankles are not strong enough to support my weight when running, so I have to rest my feet for 3 full months, every day I compress my feet with ice 2 times a day. 20 minutes per leg. after 3 months i started retraining my legs from the base, my calves and ankles.. i practiced hurdle jumps, box jumps, tuck jumps, jump squats, calf raises and going up and down stairs about 5 times a week..i do it more or less 1 month..after that I started to increase my training by endurance running from 15 minutes non-stop to 1 hour non-stop, I did it for about 2 months and even I didn't feel any more stress fractures in my legs..after that I started go into my main workout which is 5 km running, while I also do calf and ankle exercises and endurance running on different days..and NOW I am free from stress fractures, I never feel that way now..maybe this experience of mine can help someone others who have the same problem as me..as I said before, you have a stress fracture maybe because your calf and ankle are not strong enough to support the weight.. so focus on strengthening it..

Thanks for the video and for all the great work you guys are doing for the sake of safe running. I'm in a stress fracture disaster, not even getting a doctor to give me a proper look at the foot, a terrible experience. Felt weaker in general before it finely snapped. kept running too intensely despite the warning signs, was running fatigued and pushed too far too fast. Now I'm paying the price. Cheers and thanks again, can't wait to get back running!

Awesome video! I'm an avid and very experienced runner and have been doing so for about 10 years now. I was recently diagnosed with my first ever stress reaction, on my femur. I haven't been able to find much about preventing stress injuries in the femur or what physiological issue could cause them. Do you have other tips, such as mobility or strengthening that I can work on to increase my strength to prevent this from happening again?
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 жыл бұрын
I would say just making your training a bit more well-rounded and increasing strength in the hips will help remove some impact from the femurs. The stress reaction could be a simple result of tired or unfocused running form. Give this video a look specifically for hip strength: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNhkodeCr8qUkXk.html You could also give our 30 Day Challenge a look here: therunexperience.com/training-plans/30-day-challenge

Excellent yet conflicting messages. There was a comment about how swelling is bad for bone healing (which compression socks help) but at the end, we heard anti-inflammatory drugs prevent bone healing bc it prevents inflammation. Can someone help explain which inflammation is good and which is bad?
@swallow1106
@swallow1106 5 жыл бұрын
Not a physical therapist so maybe someone can correct me on this; however, inflammation has more mechanisms than just to make your tissues swell (which is a result of increase permeability that leads to more local interstitial fluid and blood flow) Part of it is also the mast cell producing cytokines that attracts other macrophages to help with removal of debris, which benefits from that increased permeability. Compression socks is more or less there to provide the pressure to push those interstitial fluid back into the vasculature or allow less room for fluid to build up that could have compartmentalizing effect. So in a way you still want to take advantage of the body's natural healing process that comes with inflammation while trying to minimize the localized edema portion out of the equation.

This video is pretty old so I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I am a mid-distance sprinter and recently developed a stress fracture. I obviously don't want to throw away my season, so I was looking for some guidance on how I can continue to train without any detrement to the healing process. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Can walking a lot also cause stress fractures , I’m on second metatarsal stress fracture this year ☹️ I’m not a runner but I exercise most days walking or gym ...,
@TheRunExperience

Sorry to hear that, Maggie! A number of years ago I was dealing with back-to-back metatarsal stress fractures, and I know just how frustrating it is. One of the mistakes I made was trying to come back to activity too soon after the first stress fracture and caused the second- oops! I'd suggest working with both a sports physiotherapist and a nutritionist. After some digging, we realized I was dealing with RED-S (formerly known as the female athlete triad), which was making me prone to bone injuries and can be a common cause of repeat stress fractures. Good luck healing and finding some answers! - Paige

I noticed that I come down hard on the lateral side of my left foot. I'm trying to change that, any suggestions? I can tell when my foot strike is off but not sure why I do it sometimes and not others.
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 жыл бұрын
The hardest part of fixing that is already over- you're aware of and focused on the issue! This could maybe be a result of lack of ankle mobility on the left side. Take a look at this video on the single leg squat- covers strength, mobility and control of the ankle and should make a big difference in your running if practiced regularly! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpN5a7io256xn4U.html

I have something very similar. I am doing strength training along with recovery and it is working fine. How long did it take to completely heal? I still have pain when I apply pressure to it so how long did that last?

Foot should land flat when running? Those with high arches generally land on.the outside and roll in to flat to.absorb impact. DON'T THEY
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 жыл бұрын
Landing "flat" is what we're going for, though of course we all have different foot/arch builds. Building the strength and endurance in the motion and repetition of that "flat foot strike" will help to enhance a safer, stronger running form. In other words, the exercise is in the CONCEPT of the flat foot strike, not the actual aesthetic of a completely flat foot (with zero arch) hitting the ground. Good question!
