my best tip for making world maps is to make sure to finish the map before worrying how it looks or trying to fix mistakes. get a general idea about where things are supposed to be in a way that the map is still usable first and then go along and make fixes and changes. if you try perfecting your map before even finishing it then you're gonna be trapped wasting time on things that you might not even like once its all done.

I love Inkarnate. I use it often for my book's maps, but I do have one complaint: I really wish it would autosave the map you're working on. I frequently listen to music while creating a map, and if I need to skip an ad, I often forget to save. I know it's human error, but it would still be a nice addition to the website.

Interesting... I explicitly avoid equal stamp sizes and other settings. What I do is add a minor amount of variation throughout all stamps from that same set. So for example; I'm making a mountain ridge, I make small variations in size (few ticks up/down), rotation (-3 to +3 deg .. keep it reasonable), and some minor hue/saturation/brightness variations. Or for large forests, reduce the brightness a step or two the more you get to the densest part of the forest.

A variation of sizes for terrain stamps makes total sense. I do the same for mountains and hills.

Always use a grid. Especially for treasure maps or handouts. You know how medieval maps all had squares on them.

During point 7 you talk about how crossing styles is not advised unless i change things hsbc(?)-wise. I googled that, but i am almost certain you are not talking about the hongkong and shanghai banking corporation. What does hsbc mean (if i even heard that correctly)?

Its no longer called HSBC. It was confusing for our users. When you select a stamp if you check the Left tool bar options and select the COLOR options you can change the HUE, SATURATION, BRIGHTNESS, & CONTRAST.

I have made so many mistakes... I knew my maps looked flat and bland and didnt have enough detail. My world map is riddled with theses mistakes except the mountains and trees clipping of the egde still super crap tho.

Hello, I have a question regarding the creation of maps in Inkarnate. So creating a new fantasy world and it's continents is relatively easy, assuming it's a new world and you decide what is what. But my question is how do we draw real world maps? Like for example Europe or USA? Do you use some sort of import tamplete? Or we draw it on hand.

My suggestion would be to import a map as a stamp then trace over it with the mask tool.

@@inkarnate7021 Thanks for the advice, but I find it hard to find a way to import something into Inkarnate, I don't see it in the tools like an option or the menu settings.

@@user-gs5uy3hm5u Select the universal tab in the catalog, then select the upload button. Uploaded art will show up in the universal tab.

isn't this square grid extremely misleading? Most likely your map is a projection of a globe, so depending on your projection, distances will widely differ between equator and the poles. Is there a way to have the grid adapt to at least the mercator projection?

Sure it can be just use a scale stamp instead. It's a matter of personal preference.
