it blows my mind to see him working on taped fedex boxes. Mark has surpassed a lot of the so-called 'best' inkers in the business so to see him working on something that...low tech.....is kind of crazy

I love the videos when you guys talk about the tools of the trade. As artist I'm always trying to figure out what the other guys are doing.

Crappy paper, ink and nibs. No wonder why lots of people are switching over to digital.

Well, yeah, Hunt nibs are pretty shoddy, Bristol board isn't as good as it was BUT I think digital kind of strips away the evidence of the human hand and that quality of "happy accidents" that you get with nibs and brushes...I'm not knocking digital per se, it's a tool like everything else (personally I think it's better for painting and colouring than it is for b & w linework because it still can't replicate the marks traditional inking tools make with 100% fidelity) but for comics I think it can suck the vitality out of linework. Like, nibs are scratchy and shit, a bit unpredictable! Most digital pens are boring, either far too slick (i DID use a really good one my mate downloaded, some manga thing which came the closest to replicating a good #3 sable--it still looked slightly "off", though) or just kind of lumpen and dead. All my favourite cartoonists still work with ink on paper and I'm glad.
