I can only support you in this way! I don't know what sport you like. But on my side, I did no sport until 19yo, 1991. That year we discovered the inline skates in Europe. I tried once and became instantly addict. Had fun since the first minute. Even if it was a (very) cheap pair of skates. 51yo now, and skating still brings to me a feeling of freedom. So welcome back! Guess you realized that we now can choose so much different skates setup: urban, fitness, speed, freeskate... Aggressive, 3x125, 4x110, 4x100, 125-110-110-125mm, 5x90, 5x84mm... Do you now what you'll choose?

Nnnice have to learn this two-skates-slide. Longer skid makes it easier?
@skatingdoctor3 ай бұрын
It's worth it 😉. It's the parallel slide. Lots of tutos on YT. But I didnt learn with a tuto back in the 90's. Only by watching other riders do it. And in reality, this slide comes naturally when you go downhill : while carving, the skates must slide a little bit or they dont turn. So if you tighten your curves more and more, the skates slide more. En finally, it's a parallel slide 😉. About 5x84mm, it's not easier, but it adds grip and stability. Maybe it's easier to learn with a 4 wheels setup. With 3 wheels, it's definitely harder. The balance is harder to find because of the bigger wheels and less grip with only 3 wheels. Finally: if you hear that you must fall to learn the parallel slide, that's wrong. I almost didnt Fall in this learning processus. Sure I fell sometimes, but only when I push the limits and then I know it can happen 😉. When I stay in the 50% of my capability like in this vid, chance of falling is 0,001!

For 4 x 100mm skates or 3 x 125mm skates what wheels would be the best to slide without a high risk of „catching the edge” and falling to the front? The asphalt around my parts is rather rough that’s why I’m using larger wheels to reduce the vibrations. I’m very confident sliding on skis and snowboard but the asphalt makes me nervous
@skatingdoctor4 ай бұрын
The bigger the wheels, the higher the risk of a high side (catch ing thé Edge as you say). So 4x100. The setup with almost risk zero of a high side is my favorite setup for downhill, ie 5x84. But it's not very confortable on a bad surface.
@torsteinlunde39317 ай бұрын
Nice, how often do you need to get new wheels? I usually use the back break...
@skatingdoctor7 ай бұрын
Thanks! It depends how often you ride. During downhill races or freeride weekends, you can finish your wheels in 2 days. But usually, I must change my wheels every 2 to 4 months (hard to say precisely because I am using regularly 6 to 8 pairs of skates as you can see on my channel. I have 3x150, 3x125, 4x100, DH350 (125-110-110-125), 5x84, 6x80, and also SUV tyre wheels (3x125 and 3x150)

@@skatingdoctor I do urban skating, but my city is quite flat, in the north shore of Spain, so I´ve never been in the need to develop a strong slide braking. I went to The Netherlands and had the chance to skate organized routes of +20 km with big groups of people and it was amazing (also flat land too!). I´ve been skating for 11 years on 4x80mm wheels. @@skatingdoctor🎯 I see, thanks 🥇
@skatingdoctor4 ай бұрын
@@Ka17788 You welcome! I know that 5WD flat setup seems a vintage setup. Why is it the best for downhill with 5x84? Because you have more wheels, so more grip for carving and braking. Also more secure : if one wheel slips, you have 4 more wheels. And because smaller wheels give more maneuverability. Then, if you want an actual setup, you should consider 4x100. But you must know it's more tiring than 5x84mm 😉. And finally, when choosing a frame, the longer the better for downhill. Ideal lenghth is... the one of the 5x84mm 😜. From middle of wheel 1 to middle of wheel 5, it's 340mm, with total length of 420mm. So if you choose a 4WD setup for downhill, better choose a longer frame than the minimum length of the 4WD you can find.
@Ka177884 ай бұрын
@@skatingdoctor oh many thanks 🤗 for 420mm I think it's impossible to find 😔 and if I do, I guess it might be at a premium price! I'll check for used hopefully I can find something reasonable, again thanks for your time and for your honest recommendation 🥰 best wishes!

@@Ka17788 What do you mean impossible to find? You mean a 4x100 setup of 420mm total lenghth or a 5x84mm? I just saw a fellow rider 2 days ago. He found on Ebay an almost new pair of speed skates with 5x84mm. Because in 2000, 5x84mm was the only setup for races like marathon. Now it's 3x125mm. So you have plenty of old skaters with 5x84mm hidden somewhere 😉

@skatingdoctor7 ай бұрын

Not on purpose 😂. In reality, my balance is altered because I'm riding with the Insta360 and the pole settled at 1.5m (5ft). So too much weight in front of me. Without the camera, I don't do this 😉

By "he", you mean me 😉? For a powerful parallel slide braking, the key point is wheels with maximum grip. Here I have the classic Rollerblade Hydrogen 85A. They're good. And about how to learn parallel slide, you have a lot of tutos. But personnaly, I learnt by myself, watching the others. And I learnt by practicing carving in a not-too-steep slope. When you carve downhill, in reality you must let your wheels slide a bit in every curve. The more you tighten the curve, the more you'll slide. And in the end, it's a parallel slide. And finally: you don't have to fall to learn. I rarely fell during the process. But let's remain careful: always wear gloves. The remaining gear is optional, but it could be good to wear knee pads, a hip protection (you often can fall on the side), and a helmet (but in reality, you almost never fall on your head when you don't ride too fast: skating is not biking...)

@@stargirl5194 No sir please. We're all riders 😉. The key for fun when going DH is to master speed indeed. If you have a quite wide road in a steady slope, it would be perfect. When carving, you must learn to put weight 50-50% on each skate. Practically, you must put the inner skate slightly in front of the outer skate at the very beginning of your curve. I.e., if you wanna turn right, you put your right skate in front, put weight on it, lean forward, and here you are 😉

Very skillful skating, but very irresponsible to go so close to that pedestrian at high speed. I was recently nearly hit from behind by a speeding cyclist when I stepped to one side. I was on a footpath in the middle of the countryside. Fortunately he missed me, but it was scary.
@skatingdoctor5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Fortunately you have not been hurt... You know, here, in reality, it's not high speed. I'm skating in low traffic areas or pedestrian areas. I'm between 20 and 35 kmh (12-22 mph). I raced in inline downhill world championship. Nice speed is 60kmh (37mph). High speed is more than 80kmh (50mph). And the pedestrian was watching me go down and we had eye contact. I know these streets like if I'm on a racetrack: did them more than 100 times. And at 52yo, I skate like a wise rider. 20-25 years ago, we were riding by night from the top of the city (750m = 2500ft) to the lake (370m = 1200) in 12 minutes at a mean speed of... 60 kmh (37.5mph).! OK, we had full protection gear, but I can tell you THAT was dangerous (especially for us) !
@MrSafetysafety3 ай бұрын
It's good that you are a good skater. Thankfully you seem to be always able to control your speed. However in reality, there must be a situation you couldn't control. That's the moment your irresponsibility toward pedestrian is revealed to your local around.

@@MrSafetysafety It's good indeed, Mr Safetysafety 😉. And in reality, I'm also a medical doctor specialized in... traffic safety! So the the Hippocratic oath forbids me from harming anyone. You must realize that the wide angle Insta360 camera alters the distances and believe me or not, but I assure you I don't let more than 0,1% to bad luck, where bad luck would be an earth quake opening the road in front of me and letting me ride into these people on the sidewalk...

@@skatingdoctor Being a doctor doesn't contribute to preventing accident in the first place by any means. Whatever oath you have, not a single one on earth is authorised to harm anyone unless under legitimate reason. I realise that you were keeping distance with anything around you. Why.? Don't protect your head.
@skatingdoctor5 ай бұрын
First, you can see a couple of vids where I have my helmets 😉 So why no helmet here? Because I'm free to choose. Because here, I don't ride faster than 35kmh (22mph) and only in low traffic areas (you can see 20 or 30 writen on the road: these are km/h). Because I'm old (52yo). Because statistics in Switzerland show that no one got severely injured (or died) at the head as he or she was not wearing a helmet while inline skating downhill over the past 30 years (and I'm working as a medical doctor in... traffic safety!). Because here I'm riding at 50% or less of my capability, taking zero risk (I did races in inline downhill world championship, reaching speeds > 80 kmh = 50 mph). Because I know these streets like a race track (did this downhill > 100 times). So when I take risks, I put my TSG Downhill helmet, or my Bell Sanction helmet. Full face helmets only, because other helmet only protect you half of your head. So I can tell you: when I don't wear my helmet, I'm wise. When I have my helmet, I take risks and that's not so wise at 52yo! BUT... I never forget the gloves. Because you can be severely injured to your hands. It's not deadly, but it can be really serious 😉

Sure. But you can see on other vids that I have a beautiful TSG Downhill helmet and a Bell Sanction with (too expensive but so great) Oakley goggles. I know it's impossible to understand for people who don't do inline downhill freeride. But in reality, the risks are different from bikes, MTB... When you ride slowly like here in low traffic areas or on sidewalks, the risks if you fall isn't for your head, but for your hands and knees/hips/elbows. That's why I wear gloves 100% of the time when I ride AND I don't take even one chance of a fall. I'm like on a racetrack in these streets in Lausanne, knowing every inch of the road. So when I ride at 50% of my capability the risk of a fatal crash is 0.01 (I raced in world DH championship, now 52yo). OK, I can't imagine that a plane or a crane crash on me, but I anticipate even cars and bikes and people driving/walking through a red light. So I can tell you I take risks when I wear the helmet, not when I don't wear it😉. But despite this lack of helmet, I hope you appreciated the skills. That's my goal to show nice footage of inline skating downhill
