In this video, Steve demonstrates the difference between pulling the handle of the driver with the arms into the ball, versus the Austin out throw of the clubhead from the top.
The result will be increased clubhead speed, better impact, and a higher angle of attack!

This is the only thought I warm up with before a round now. Throwing. It's kind of liberating, simple and gets rid of other thoughts. I'm not claiming anything more than the fact that it certainly works for me, and I'm not claiming that it has changed my game; it has simplified it while scores improve during tournament pressure. BTW, this is just a beautiful day here in Ventura County; I think this practice range that Steve is using is in Moorpark, CA. Thanks for the great lesson Mr. Pratt.

I remember that nicklaus statement from his "golf my way" video. However, it is very important to remember that he finished that statement with "as long as you get over to your left side" (for a RH golfer). So if you shift your weight to your left side during the downswing, you can release the club as early as you want in the downswing.

Thank you, thank you! I started doing this style earlier this year after researching golf swing physics and momentum. My ball striking and consistency have gone way up. I've been struggling to explain it to people....they think you are nuts but it really works! Your explanation ties out to my notes of not pulling down with the arms....the body "throws" relaxed arms back behind the ball.

Great information. I've been working on shallowing and swinging from the inside and what I've learned is that you MUST turn your body whether you pull or throw. If you do the pull method slowly, the face will square and it's laser straight! If you don't time it write you will slice or shank. What you need to figure out is which is best for YOU. The less flexible may be better at throwing. Notice Steve said he is practicing throwing at the end of the video. it all takes practice!!

Emphasis also needs to be placed on the turning of the body, as this creates centrifugal force along the shaft as the handle moves around the body rather than towards the ball. This, along with the throw, accelerates the ball even more along the shaft, giving greater clubhead speed.

Throwing/releasing/downhinging (whatever it wants to be called 🤣) is something I wasn’t doing which was causing me not hit the ball effectively. Ever since I came across this motion, I’ve been doing it and have been able to hit balls down range consistently. Thanks to this video I now know how my hands contribute to my swing. I used to use the pull down feel which could easily tip the club and disrupt my swing if I was trying to hit a harder or softer shot. With this out throw feel, I can add power and keep everything on plane. One thing I think should be called out is that proper lower body rotation and sequencing should already be in place to appreciate this move.

Today at range: lefty facing me, about 55 years old, barrel chested, stiff and locked-in address, arms locked and extended with death grip on club. Hitting driver about 150. He admired one of my drives. (I am 74). I explained the out-throw versus his handle-pulling or stiff yank. Didn’t expect he could do anything with it-as I was explaining I was asking myself why I was doing it--but he surprised me and got it right away, as in from the first! Immediately gained 40-60 yards and half the shots were draws. The guy lit up. I could have charged him for the lesson. BTW: I use Hogan’s explanation for the feel of the out-throw: “I feel like I’m taking an arrow out of a quiver.” In other words, the first move of the hands is not down but backward along the target line and even slightly up, the way you would pull an arrow if you had a quiver strapped across your back. Just one inch will get the club catapulting. I also referred him to your videos on out-throw.

I cant agree wth u more. Tried many movemnts. Stopping split second in downswing while throwing is the best by far. With one caveat, the right hand if youre right hander, has to be very relaxed when throwing. The sequence i used is shift lower body lateral to the left, back shoulder facing the target. After this done (this is where split second waiting is over) then throw club away from target and when the club is abt parellel to ground rotate upper body and start straighting the left foot. Tts the feeling i hv. Ball will fly baby draw and far. It works very well evrytime...when rythm n timing is done correctly

Hi Steve. Is there any prerequisite to have to use the Austin Pivot to gain the benefits of the throw motion you are presenting or is this throw relevant for any type of pivot? It is interesting that I have tried to incorporate your hip movement drills into my swing but I cant seem to make it work fluidly without also including the throw motion. Without a conscious throw the move into my left side seems to stall. The throw seems to force the left hip back or at least seems to match it all up as a smooth continuous motion. Interested in your thoughts if they are all linked together and one cant work without the other?

It’s just all interpretation and perspective. Some people think of a pull and throw in different ways that may give different results for each individual person. Not saying this doesn’t work for people, but for me when I think of throwing the club out, I tend to cast outward with a weak heal hit. As opposed for me, thinking of pulling down actually helps me create the speed and then releasing the club into the ball. Then I just make sure my shoulders are properly aligned at impact for an in to out swing. But I do like how you make it apparent that you need to “throw”/release your hands earlier than you think cause I find my problem to be is I let my body and arms get way too far ahead before releasing the club and then I get stuck with face wide open cause I didn’t leave room to release.

Steve, do you feel like the left side of the body is posting and whipping the right side around? It looks like that but not sure that is really happening?

The laws of physics are pretty deterministic :) IN golf the rest is marketing. Let's agree that at impact one has fulled "casted" to make contact. So not casting is not an option. To "cast" too soon loses energy cause it's harder to move a long club fully extended. That is the equivalent of not breaking one's wrists but swinging stiff-wristed. "Casting" too late doesn't allow for the closing of the face - except without some inefficient contortions. One must time the "cast" for the maximum club-head speed at impact. And that is determined by body rotation and strength.

Steve, I think I understand the "throw away" in that it starts immediately with the transition, however, what is the direction of the throw. Should it feel like you're throwing the clubbed and hands to first base, even though your target line is center field? Second, when does the forearm crossover begin in the swing? Before impact, at impact, or at some other point in the downswing? Your videos and teaching of the Austin swing have been eye openers!
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 3 жыл бұрын
FEEL is not universal, so you will have to find your feels as you practice freely throwing the club from the top through impact. The crossover begins just after both arms are fully extended (30 inches after impact).

How does one not flip with this action Steve? I can see how it might work with driver but with a short iron?

Try it in the garden without a ball - if you worry about striking a ball you'll slow down and flick. Just swing as hard as you can, like this, throw as you turn. I guarantee you'll hit the ground harder than you were expecting, in a good way, and once you get your timing, in front of where you thought you were going to.

There are lots of people who play this way (even pros) but it helps to be big and strong like you are. A near tour quality pro, David Knighton, at Southern Woods in Homosassa, Florida plays this way. He is very big and strong. David's swing looks effortless, but be will tell you that near impact he is hitting as hard as humanly possible It just looks easy. David can hit the ball almost 300 yards with his right hand only on the driver. I was not strong enough to use this swing. David once reached a long Par 5 with his broken left arm in a cast hanging in a sling from his neck. He missed the eagle putt..... David tried to quality for the U.S. Open at Bay Hill every year but never made it.
