In this video, Steve takes a deep dive into the two styles of release or hand action presented over the years by Mike Austin and his scions.
Dubbed 'Classic' and 'Modern', Steve highly recommends you follow the same style that Mike performed during his prime and advocated for over 50 years.
This release will give you more clubhead speed, more distance efficiency, and tons more driver distance from your golf swing.

Steve, I am 68 trying to get some distance back. I stopped playing for about 8 years after 2 herniated disks. Watching the exercise Mr. Austin demonstrates at 5:33 is amazing. This is very similar to something I stumbled on in 1993. I remember practicing the feeling of the club starting down on it's own, letting gravity start the downswing. Once the club started down without me pushing it, I could add power, and everything else would fall into place seemingly automatic, no flipping or pushing it right! Also a feeling of trying to get my right hand as close to my right pants pocket or thigh as possible as I turned into the ball. I was used to shooting maybe 15 over at the time but once I started this I was breaking 80 and within a couple weeks I shot a 75! The 75 was in Lancaster Texas and I was faced with one shot over a full grown oak tree. 145 or more out, normally an 8 or even 7 iron but couldn't get them over so I hit a nine and "turned the pizza box." I got it over and on the green. I spent 3 months with no score worse than 81 or 82 but not knowing how to keep it going the magic left me. I can't wait to get out and apply some of your tips and this exercise in particular. I was a 8 handicap (they made me play to a 5 in the club skins games) at my best hitting drives about 270 with a slight draw. At 68 I am fighting to constantly average over 220. I have never heard anyone touch on that "pendulum" swing before but I used the same term trying to explain the feeling to my son back then. This I think will help a great deal! Sorry the story is almost a book, but I am way excited by this! Thanks!!!!

Excelllent video, Steve. I have seena video where Mike Austin is showing Mike Dunaway how to windl up his R arm. That is pronate or bend his R wrist backwards and allow the R arm to externally rotate. This is reversed on the downswing, fascilitating the flap before the roll. The left hand rotates clockwise . dan advocates similar move with R hand-but his L hand counter rotates (knuckles down)

That takeaway is what the majority of top tour players do. The back of the hand pointing to the ground somewhat on the takeaway really solves a load of swing issues. It changed my swing massively after yrs of rolling the face open on the takeaway a la Hogan which tended to have the club move inside too soon. We all know what develops from there: the dreaded over the top move. Now my plane is solved and the swing downward and thru the ball is from in to out not over the top, which happened for yrs with the inside, roll the face open takeaway. I ended up playing a pull cut for yrs now it's a natural draw. Great video and explanations.

Steve, I have the Austin DVDs and the Shauger DVDs and your summary is perfect. That said, what I had never noticed before and was in your clip, was the “pressing down of the thumbs” at the start of the downswing in conjunction with the turn. Are the pressing down of the thumbs, sort of a throwing motion of the club shaft backwards and down, THE throwing motion so often stated / discussed? From the Austin / Dunaway DVDs seemed to show a different hand action and Shauger had the spinning meatballs visual. Thumbs seem a lot easier... Help?

I just did this at the range. I've been trying to hang onto lag for 15 years. Tonight I'd let my right elbow go high in the backswing then just smacked the crap out of it with my right hand, feeling like I was crossing them over fast. Didn't turn my hips, just swung them under me. The faster and more freely I did it the further and straighter it went. 140PW 250 carry 3 wood. And so easy. Just incredible.

As I tried both method I can tell, both work well. I think it is a matter of personal taste and how much work you wanna put into it. The new Austin move, and by the way there is a video from Mike Austin rules where the master himself says that he is not promoting the roll anymore, is in my opinion easier to learn and execute. And as we are all amateurs I prefer a method which is easier to learn and execute.

Holy CRAP Steve!!! 😵😵😵 When I just heard you say that it was suggested to roll your left wrist over going up into the backswing, I almost spit my coffee, lol. I can absolutely attest, this DEFINITELY works in some VERY interesting and unexpected ways. The chain reaction from how this little twist loads and sets your forearms is just to damn cool. Let me be clear, I’m not talking about rolling it over really far as you are showing, but rather just a very slight movement over. Maybe a quarter or half an inch. But don’t feel that you need to hold that all the way through the swing. Only do this little fractional twist while pulling your takeaway. After watching a whole lot of slow motion pro golfer swings, I swear I was seeing them do exactly this slight forward roll/tuck under move within the first three feet of the take back as they were bringing the club back and up onto the backswing. So I worked in/incorporated the feel of exactly that same move into my draw back of the club in my backswing. The results from just that little twist forward of how it actually floated that club up and through the transition to the downswing was incredible. ABSOLUTELY did not expect THAT. What was even more interesting was, as I made my arm drop going into my forward rotation, the ergonomic feel of the club was VERY powerful and when I dropped the hammer and let it whip through the bottom of the swing, not sure how to describe this but, it never felt so effortless to provoke a club to feel like it was going to leave my hands from centrifugal force. Mind you, the only change was twisting my left hand over a bit which made me feel like I needed to reach a little farther out to the perimeter of the swing circle. But what that little twist set up as a next progression of positions in my swing sequence was friggin AWESOME. AND, these actions repeated automatically every time I did that little twist. So as you can probably guess, I drilled that in as a natural attribute of my stock swing and I seriously have never been more consistent with dead straight pure strikes AND mishits. It beautiful. After all the work I put into my swing studying tips and doing drills from you, Pete Cowan, Danny Maude, and the guys from AMG, that last little twist I noticed was the icing on the cake. Your tips and instructions have been absolutely pivotal in achieving my success. How good has my swing become. Let’s put it this way. If my swing was a fish, I would spare no expense in having it stuffed and mounted over my fireplace, for the winter, and carefully take it down readying it for spring, lol. Thanks man!!!👍🏻😎👍🏻

The "flapping" action is just a natural tossing, throwing motion. And personally I think the left hand is just passive. Many call it a flip, well then, every throw, jumpshot, wrist shot, baseball swing etc, would be "flips". I call it a follow thru. The left arm and hand are just guides along for the ride. Excellent video

My name is Mark, the picture is my wife. She is a pianist and I help with her videos. Anyway, watching further, I can say I only needed to consciously try to keep an even rhythm and feel a pause at the top. I tried to keep a mental picture of the non hurried swing of a pendulum on a grandfather clock and would practice that over and over as Mr. Austin was doing. Of course over the ball I would take it back and start down in that fashion but then accelerate though. Still, if I started back with that rhythm and let gravity start the downswing I could add a great deal of force coming into the ball but there was no active work at all to square the club face. That was automatic without any thought or effort.

Nice video Steve. I’m a former hockey player and know for sure that my effort to manipulate a golf swing using the awkward lead wrist flexion has held me back. My natural movement with the stick is to exert loads of outward force with my wrists - but Dan’s method takes that away. The original Austin method in conjunction with a proper body pivot and rotation is so obvious to me the athletic move through and beyond impact. Wrists and forearms have to release - I could hit wrist shots sending a puck at 100 MPH and a full on slap shot with ground forces far faster than that; your video illustrates key differences that personally resonate with me and have convinced me to apply my natural stick instincts which I’ve been holding back for some reason in the golf swing (and I think it’s because all this instruction out there about handle pulling and flexion of the lead wrist)

Question on the toll part in Austin’s skeleton suit video where he says that he squares the blade by turning the forearm bones, are you saying that this is the roll part and also that it happens after impact? If it happens after impact, why was Austin saying that (or seemed like) it needed to happen prior to contact with the ball?

Flap it and roll it, that is a great swing thought. And the body pivot takes care of the closing of the club face. Thanks. I noticed that, if I don't roll the forearms, the body is stuck and fights the weight transfer. Probably out of self preservation, lol. It’s important to point out that Dan Shauger advocated that rotation of the lead arm happens at the shoulder socket not the forearms. Mike Austin did mention supination and pronation of the forearms but can be seen also in the Dunaway lessons explaining that the primary action of internal and external rotation of the lead arm at the shoulder joint is primary in order to not impede the path of The club head. Dan Shauger also mentions that point in video using Jacob Bowden as his model. The hands alone are not able to consistently control the club face without the use of the rotator muscles of the shoulder joint including the scapula and the pivot of the body. Certainly on short shots the hands are usually more than enough but not on swings where one has a weight shift to increase distance. The reason for this simply comes down to basic anatomy. Bigger and slower muscles control the full length of the body’s limbs whereas smaller muscles control hinge joints. Simply being able to rotate the palm of the hand using your bicep muscle is not a justification for that action being given so much importance other than to minimize it so that it does not interfere with the muscles that actually connect limbs to the torso and already influence the club face themselves in conjunction with the tilt of the body at address. So in conclusion I won’t condemn forearm action to manipulate shot shape as long as one is willing to make the shot shape the goal over max distance. I will however say that this rotation of the club face does nothing to add distance to one’s swing only too many muscles attempting to square the blade. Quite hands are not about no forearm action only minimal to prevent exaggerated use and shot inconsistencies.
@Inmotion70

@@Inmotion70 The following videos all explain what I was explaining in my original post to your modern vs classic release. Which by the way I think your swing is excellent. By no means am I judging you at all so let’s clear that of the table. I’ve watch your very detailed videos from start to finish and relish in your in person lessons from Mike Austin who did actually use more than one hand action in his teachings depending on the time the student was learning from him. Both Austin and Dunaway spoke of pronation of the lead arm during Austinology Tapes and later on in the privacy of Mikes home can be seen discussing the lead wrist Palm flexion and trail wrist pronation to keep the trail elbow on plane without getting stuck as it folds up! (The bowed left wrist at the top!) One thing that is very important to keep in mind about Dan Shauger was in reference to Mike Austin’s compound pivot as it pertains to the twist away wrist action. They had according to Dan in one of his videos a difference of opinion over how the pivot works with the new release that Austin was speaking about. It is of utmost importance that one does not mix Austin’s new release with the modern teachings of the golf swing since the use of the legs today and the weight shift are much different than they were in Mike,s swing and in videos where he taught various pros in his clinics. I don’t know your back ground prior to Mike’s lessons you had so if you already rolled your forearms on the backswing and downswing why would he advise you to change something that he himself did do and explain in various swing videos. He did also teach the opposite in clinics or demonstrations and to me he looked fully confident in his explanation as it was before his stroke using a one iron! In truth as long as what you are doing does not impede the free release( rolling or not) through impact and you are consistent enough to manage your ball around the course while being satisfied with the scores you shoot then keep up the good work. I think you will agree that giving yourself the greatest chance to consistently time your impact sending the ball to your target is really the true measure of your ball striking ability! If you cannot do that then it would be of the greatest importance to get clarification as to why your inconsistent at impact in order to practice the correct body actions to achieve higher quality results. Obviously you are from my observations of your swing videos performing your swing exceptionally! Shauger was an advocate of using as much of Austin’s pivot and hand action that your body allows you to based on age, or physical limitations. Better to use a portion correctly rather than over reach in frustration! So anyway here are the searches for some videos pertaining to our discussion. Please watch them with an open mind like Einstein and Borh had to have in order to appreciate the other’s observations. 1) Mike Dunaway Explains Hans Action. 2) Jaacob Bowden Spin the meatball concept 3) David Duval describing the Austin No Face rotation release 4) David Duval Discusses Hands Release part 1 & 2 5) Jaacob Bowden Video Testimonial of Dan Shauger Golf 6) Mike Austin Riveria Clinic (In this video Mike specifically explains the way he starts the backswing and counter rotates the trial forearm to keep the trail elbow in front of his body rather then get stuck behind him and why!). All while smashing his one iron😊 7) Dan Shauger Release (Jaacob Bowden is used in this demonstration). Notice that Jaacob’s lead shoulder externally rotated post impact allowing the elbow stay under his lead hand preventing the chicken wing that you said happens in your video on Dan Shauger’s counter wrist action takeaway/release. I know Dan said in one of his videos that the lead shoulder must rotates in the socket to keep the club on plane in the follow through but I saw that one several years ago when I was a member on his sight and cannot remember the video title. Most of his KZfaq videos are segments of full ones from his sight I was a member of a few years ago prior to his death. Jaacob had some videos on his Swing Man sight but I am not a member on it any longer either. Anyway I doubt your going to see my point here and that’s totally fine. I will continue to watch your stuff and take from it stuff that I consider essential and not fret over what may not apply to my swing. I prefer a simple single plane swing like Moe Norman’s over the two planes commonly taught today. Max distance isn’t my goal by any means the least complicated and easiest to time with the least practice is. I prefer to practice situational shots as opposed to my full swing since I never truly swing full for any club including the driver! Thanks for your feedback and keep up the great swing😎

Steve, I'm glad you said to some it may just feel like a flap and then the roll happens naturally. Just don't try hold off the roll. I feel like if you get too wrapped up thinking about the roll it's going to happen too early and face gets closed to the arc. Is the trick for max speed to absolutely snap the roll post impact, but to maintain the flap until impact? So from the top the intent would be to flap and snap, but to train that snap to happen post impact?

Steve, I enjoyed your recent collaboration with Eric Cogorno where you demonstrated the upwards, backwards and away from target path of the club head at transition. When you demonstrated the hand action with the speed whoosh on the downswing the club head accelerated 180 degrees, but would this not mean that the club head would be well forward of the hands at impact. Mike Austin clearly shows a neutral wrist, in terms of flexion/extension, at contact. Grateful if you could provide the missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle to reconcile these two actions/positions, as I am slightly confused at the moment. Then I hope that I also will be able to meet you longer and further down the fairway. Keep up the great videos. Many thanks.

Super interesting, did you ever hear Mike Austin describe it in this way or is this something that Dan Shauger came up with?

Steve, have you ever done a video on where Mike Austin gets the club at left arm parallel and how he lifts his arms from there? You can see this in his earlier videos of his swing. He also touches on this in his video with MD. I ask for two reasons, firstly because my interpretation of his initial takeaway seems to be a mixture of what you are discussing all be it that Mike did it more with his hands. Secondly and of more interest to me is how he went from left arm parallel with the club looking inside but is on plane as he describes to lifting the arms and the effect this has on shoulder blades. Hope this makes sense. Love your thoughts on what I believe is the best way to swing a club and after using this method I am at least a club and a half longer with my irons.😃😃👍

An aside to the "flap". The worst analogies perpetrated on the general golfing masses is the hammer and whip analogy. Both require a stalling action to perform. And the stalling will cause a flip. Try throwing anything while you're stalling the arms. The "flap" is executed within the pivot and full swing. Just mho

Interesting. Confusing also. The old method of release is powerful (cross over), but the face is not square for long unless the turn is perfect and not stalled to an early stop. The more modern approach is not as powerful but creates more shaft lean and a de-lofted flight (longer), with the face square for moments longer.

Steve - sorry another observation. Mike talks about using his thumbs to impart force on the handle to throw the club head so it catches up to his body. That hand action advocated by Mike is more of a chopping motion while turning your body. Well, you are right about one major thing. Everyone is confused about the release. And Dan Shauger confused a lot of people with his ideas. However, I’ve been looking at every clip and every instruction there is of the Austins swing for the last 15 years. Both of himself and of Dunaway. Everyone that tries to understand the smaller parts of the swing (the release in particular) seem to miss things and everyone say that he really did this or that and he said one thing but did another. He got old and so on. That I just don’t agree with. What I did early on was to not look at secondary sources. Dunaway and Shauger was still very much active som 15 years ago. But not even Mike Dunaway seem to translate everything even if I believe he was the one who had the best grasp of it other than Austin himself. Instead I concentrated after a year two only on what Austin himself say and what his swing looked like in reality. What his swing really looked like is hard as you basicly get a blur if you try to caption stills from it. Here is my take. 1. He never rolled his forearms in any of the swings I have seen. I have looked at frame by fram in almost all the low res movies there are (I have some higher quality on DVD). His whole arm rolles a tiny bit. And it rolles as a result of his shoulder turn as his arms follow the turn. His hands and wrist don’t turn independently. Just because Shauger was wrong (counter roll etc) doesn’t mean Austin actually rolled his forearms. He didn’t. And one way you know he didn’t is that you can look at where his clubface is pointing at the top of the swing. It always faces the sky. Atleast from the age of about 50 and onwards. And the reason for that is that he didn’t roll the club in the backswing. I do the exakt same thing. Too bad I can’t post images/videos here. Austin definitly slaps the ball in a similar way like Shauger said. You can see an extreme bend in Austins left hand in the impact zone. After that the left arm went a bit out and the back of the hand raise toward the sky. After a while momentum takes over. The left arm break and the left arm rotates in the shoulder joint. Forearms doesn’t rotate at all and there is no chicken wing. The arm rotates a bit in the socket joint on its way towards the sky. This is later than you show in your own swing. Your swing seem to go more around you than Austins swing. And at the top of your swing the toe of the club points much more downward. And you don’t have the slap position of left hand prior impact. Many of your positions are very Austin like, but those just aren’t. 2. The confusion other than everyone that tries to have their own interpretations is mostly down to that old black and white movie you show in you video above. I agree. In that video he does indeed show more of a classic roll over release. I don’t know why he showed it that way in that particular video because its not how he did it. Maybe it was because he wanted to simplyfy for the audience and not bring in new concepts like his own version of the release. Or maybe it was at such an early point in his teachings that he simply didn’t want to reveal his ”secret slap”. He has claimed in later videos that he kept it a secret. One other thing. I like your little research on the biography of Mike. I have done some myself that I’ll maybe put up some day. A bunch of old articles on him. All the way from the late 1930’s. And yes, he was 59 in 1974, not 64. It even says he was 59 in the articles from the time of his record drive. I also found his borta certificate and things from the navy and there was something about a plane crash.

It’s great to watch your swings, Steve. They are clearer than words! Considering the hand action through impact is interesting. It is just natural, completely unforced. Impact is just prior to the bottom of the arc. All the forces created by the double pivot are aligned NATURALLY at this point. The centripetal force causes the arms to max out their extension, which returns the club face to square. As I see it, at this ‘moment’ the hands behave as one unit in the chain reaction. As the vertical line of balance through the heel and hip is passed continued torso rotation absorbs the excess energy. (Which Mike calls ‘dumping’ the club over the shoulder.) My efforts at present are focussed on getting the upper and lower torso to move as one. Old habits die hard, I guess!

To me Dan’s interpretation is an unnatural move Austin’s is way more simple to accomplish. Steve, I slowed this down in hudl app and noticed that you do not flap or shallow club but you do roll almost immediately after impact. A big key to your impact vs amateurs is your head stays back and your hips move forward then right shoulder goes down.

In my opinion the framerate of this video is not high enough to really assess the hand action during and immediately after impact. I think in the takeaway in Steve´s (very rhythmic and sound) swing the clubface is neutral to slightly closed, but surely not open. It seems to me there is more flipping action then rolling-over action in impact, but I´m not sure.

Actually Steve, I was referring to the release and not the backswing as you refer to in your reply below. See 11:50 mark in video. I am saying Dan's release does not result in a chicken wing as seen in his videos because he does roll the forearms after impact and does not try to hold on to the squaring of the release of the wrists as you demonstrate earlier in your video. Therefore, you can hit the ball far with Dan's method without resulting in the dreaded chicken wing. Mike actually corrects Mike Dunnaway in one of his videos on the rolling of the arms and the need to keep it square through impact, which is professing Dan's method. I will post the link and mark of the video in a reply to this post.

Good luck doing this once you reach 50 unless you are a freak athlete. Maybe this is why 98% of golfers don't hit it any farther today than they did 15 years ago. hi Steve, In one of Mike's video he clearly said that the left thumb has to reach the radius of the left hand circle before it turn over. He explained that if you slap the left back hand you will short cutting the circle and will top the ball. To me it makes lot of sense to do that because the club head circle will be the same right after impact or even a little bit wider. I see Mike club head travel so close to the ground after he hit the ball. He would take like 8 inches thin divot.
