“This song is very different to Stairway to Heaven.” Welcome to Led Zeppelin. This song could have easily been titled Whole Lotta Sex. The double neck guitar is a six and a twelve string on one body. It’s used so Jimmy doesn’t have to switch guitars in the middle of a song. Check out Since I’ve Been Loving You from them… or anything really.

Like your reaction. The double guitar is a six string on the bottom and 12 string on the top which produce different tones. Led Zeppelin does a lot of blues type rock songs. This song came out when a quad sound system was trying to hit the market where the sound was broken into 4 track instead of just 2 tracks like in stereo. the middle of the song gives a swirling effect where it seems like its spinning around you which works great off a quad system. I had a friend in high school who had a quad system when this song came out and it worked great. Quad systems never real took off and few artist recorder in quad but you can still get the effect off of headphones even in stereo.

This song was released as the lead track on their 2nd album in dec.1969. It was decades ahead of its time, and shot their popularity into outer space, taking the top world group title from the Beatles, who had held it since 1962. The sounds created in the middle section have been described well enough below, what I didn't see mentioned is that they are creating the sound of a sexual encounter, climaxing (pun intended) with the drum roll and guitar solo!

This was from 1969 from 'Led Zeppelin II' (Led Zeppelin's 2nd album), and before Led Zeppelin debuted in early 1969, there was no such thing as 'heavy rock' or 'heavy metal'... U had guitar-oriented bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience, Vanilla Fudge, and The Who... but music back then was The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, etc... Even Jimmy Page (guitar) was in a band called The Yardbirds until 1968, which is when he put Led Zeppelin together and recorded their debut album. The power behind Led Zeppelin was definitely John Bonham's powerhouse drumming... combined w/ Robert Plant's high vocals... That was what made Zeppelin's first album the first 'heavy rock' record... Jimmy Page (guitar) wanted to harness that power w/ the bass grooves of John Paul Jones and added layers of guitar to make the music heavier... The songs were intense and blues-oriented. Nobody had heard anything like it before, and in 1969, the album rapidly sold and gave Led Zeppelin instant fame. Hoping to capitalize on their live power in concert... Page recorded 'Led Zeppelin II' in 1969 w/ more original songs and added more layers of instruments to make the record a classic... He would experiment in the studio w/ sounds and depth while recording and gave the album a quality that changed music forever. 'Whole lotta love' was released as a single in 1969 and it became a huge hit... 'Led Zeppelin II' went to #1 on the US charts and Led Zeppelin were massive by 1970 after just 2 years as a band. They eventually had to give credit to blues songwriter Willie Dixon for the track... Those 2 Zeppelin records inspired a plethora of bands to play heavy rock music... Deep Purple changed their sound in 1970 to play heavy rock... Black Sabbath also debuted in 1970... There wasn't a band in the 70's (or 80's) who wasn't inspired by Led Zeppelin. They were the originators of what became heavy metal and hard rock music. And this was where it began... Years later, the members of Led Zeppelin rejected the term 'heavy metal'... they wanted to be known for their diverse sound (that included acoustic music) and not just as a 'heavy rock' band 😈

Ha Ha Ha!!!! Inna ... EVERYTIME I hear this song I crack up. When I was in my early 20s, my friend played this song on a CD Juke Box in a diner after we were returning from a concert. This song was playing on everyone's speakers in the restaurant. That part at 4:15 - 4:24 where Robert Plant is going ..."Ah Ah Ah Ah..." and you said, " I am Shocked. What was that?" ... you can imagine the people in the restaurant. Sitting across from our table were two gray haired old ladies. One of them said... "Oh My God! This is soooo vulgar." It's a Gibson twin neck. The top neck is 12 string and the lower is 6 string. It is great for quick switching guitar sounds from section to section in a piece of music. The pickups can be set to different tones as well as the switch in character between 6 and 12 string sounds.

That unique sound is created by Jimmy using a violin bow to drag across the strings of the guitar. Also, the double neck guitar is for when you need two different guitar sounds in the song as both necks are tuned differently. You only play one neck at a time but can switch to the other when needed for a different sound. Also, try the live version of 'Dazed and Confused' to see how Jimmy uses the violin bow. It is amazing.

Look at their 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden. The double-neck guitar has a 12-string on the top and a standard 6-string on the bottom neck. You are listening to "Hard Rock" which is Riff based, consisting of a 3-4 person band, the music has roots in American Blues. Being a sophisticated listener means you have developed a deeper understanding of what it takes to make the sound you're hearing, musicianship etc. One does not just touch a guitar string and out comes what you're hearing. Sensitivity of touch and manipulation, along with carefully selected tube amplifiers and sound effect pedals and boxes are combined and offer an infinite soundscape that must be expertly manipulated to produce what you're listening to. Have a few drinks before listening to this music.

The double neck guitar is a somewhat common instrument with some rock bands. The most seen is produced by the Gibson guitar company. The guitar is comprised of a standard six string guitar on the bottom and a twelve string guitar on the top. The twelve string provides a more smooth sound to its rhythmic sound and with the six string also there it provides the player the ability to perform rhythmic movements and quickly switch to more complex lead guitar arrangements without changing guitars. Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page uses this in several of their songs for example “Stairway to Heaven” and another band known for using one is the Eagles in their “Hotel California” which is another proper house song.

The double neck guitar is a 12 string & a 6 string and used for Stairway To Heaven (1975). I think the video you are watching for Whole Lotta Love (1969) is a montage of clips ranging from early 1968/9, date of Whole Lotta Love, to 1975/9 performances where Jimmy Page would have been using the double guitar on stage.for some songs. His go to guitar was a Gibson Les Paul single neck 6 string

This preceded "Stairway to Heaven" by a couple years. When "Whole Lotta Love" song came out, the Blues were big, and this song is very 'Mississippi Delta Blues" sounding like Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. By 1971, the year for "Stairway to Heaven", Progressive Rock was big, and the blues was slowly on the way out. Progressive Rock is longer songs, multiple suites and chord changes, and more influenced by Jazz and Classical. "Stairway to Heaven" is Led Zeppelin's version of Progressive Rock.

In case no one has mentioned it, a double-neck guitar has a 6-string neck and a 12-string neck. The 6-string guitar is the typical standard type guitar. The 12-string guitar has 12 strings which basically produces a fuller, sound. I've owned many guitars, but never a 12-string. The guitar company Rickenbacker has had a reputation for making signature-sounding 12-string guitars.

The double guitar was built out of necessity.. there were some versions before but he had his built for Stairway specifically because of of those 12 string changes.. it then lended use to Song Remains abs many other classic tunes.. such a beautiful guitar..

The "double guitar" is a 12 string guitar on top and a 6 strong below. It's a Gibson EDS-1275. In the video made up of a number of performances you also get a quick chance to see Jimmy Page playing a Gibson Les Paul with a bow and you get a couple quick looks at Jimmy's famous Dragon Fender Telecaster (that started out as Jimmy's mirror Telecaster).

The strange electronic sounds in the middle part of Whole Lotta Love are produced using an instrument called a theramin. Played by guitarist Jimmy Page, the theramin had an antenna that controlled the pitch and volume of the tones depending on the distance and height of his hand relative to the antenna. Page can be seen playing the theramin in the live version of Whole Lotta Love from the 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden.

If I ever have to pick a song being the last one I may ever listen to it will be this one. It has everything a rock song needs and more. Paige is brilliant on the guitar and using a violin bow to make unique sounds during the break is fantastic. Plant's vocals are not from this world. Drummer Jon Bonhom plays his drum like a machine gun and John Paul Jones playing the jazz bass is without knowing a real fitting word, "fat". And the lyrics, well, it is obvious what it is about and the music with the lyrics combined is 5.33 minutes of bedroom activity ... with happy end. Listen to the song a few more times and you will never take it from your playlist anymore. It just is that awesome.

Not sure if anyone ever answered your question, but the double-neck guitar actually has a purpose besides looking cool. If you look at the top one, it is a 12-string guitar, which you can see there are 6 tuning pegs on each side of the head at the top of the neck. The bottom one is a regular six-string guitar, with 3 pegs at the head on each side. This allows guitarists to basically have two different guitars on one body that can be used at different times for different sounds.

As I’m sure people have told you the double neck guitar is a Gibson SG double with a 12 string on top and a 6 string on the bottom, they are very heavy back breakers and most people just use effects to get an approximation of a 12 string sound on a 6 string these days but yeah they are cool.

You can see it in snippets in the video compilation playing he's playing the electric guitar with a violin bow... About the guitars, if you look closely in the video, the top arm has 12 strings and the lower arm has the standard 6 string. the 12 string basically has a different sound set. it's easier to carry the one double necked guitar them to wear 2 guitar during the performance...

Led Zeppelin was one of the most musically talented bands in history. This music is my generations music. These songs were #1 when I was graduating high school. Zeppelin can play Stairway to Heaven, a mellow deep song, with incredible lyrics and poetry, and the next sone is this, Whole lotta Love, which sounds completely different. Most bands can’t do that, most bands sounds all sound relatively similar. The crazy sounds you hear in this song, are sounds of Jimmy Page playing those sounds on his guitar. No one else could ever play those things! He’s a master of the guitar, a true legend. (I’m a guitarist so know about Page) Jimmy Page even played his guitar in these songs using a bow for a violin! No one before or after has ever done these things like he did which created these sounds you hear. The guitar with 2 necks, is a Gibson SG double neck, one neck has 6 strings, the other neck has 12 strings, and he tuned the strings in different unique ways, then used violin bow and even drum sticks to play his guitar. Amazing, crazy, unique sounds. And we have to remember Robert Plant singer, wow, and the other band members all fantastic musicians. They were so very versatile, they could completely change their sound from one song to the next, sounding like a different band! Amazing. You MUST invest the time to go through their albums and listen to their music. And while the music is awesome, far surpassing anything today, bigger and even better than the sound, was their stage presence when you saw them live. It was like they were “fake” . Hahaha. What I mean is “Bigger than life”. Dripping with charisma. All any of us could think at the time was “they’re not normal people.” “They’re Led Zeppelin”!

"Stairway To Heaven" was a BALLAD, what later was a routine by Heavy-Metal-Bands. But LED ZEPPELIN also were THE FOUNDER of the new Music-Genre called "Hardrock" or "Heavy Metal"... Without them...

Hello Inna!!! Led Zeppelin's work is so, how to call it, wide; because it is not pigeonholed in a specific genre. It can be psychedelic, the thickest blues, or something really hard rock. In fact, the Led Zeppelin III album has many acoustic themes. I recommend that you react to "Since I've Been Loving You". Greetings from Argentina
