Nice video and awesome set up you have there, those calves look REALLY good (health wise). Great to see someone invest that much into their calves, so many get less than half the love and care yours do! Lastly, just wish to say thank you on the calves' behalf for using anaesthesia before using an electric dehorner. That deserves to be a standards benchmark for animal welfare. I wish you all the best for the future! 😃👍

What a great video! There is research that is just being submitted to the Journal of Dairy Science which shows higher weight gains and much better coagulation of milk on calves fed from Milk Bar nipple. The research also shows that the controlled milk flow of the Milk Bar Nipple is the reason farmers can raise mobs of calves with no cross suckling damage. Really interesting reading for sure!

How long do you usually need to keep the calves with their mothers before they are weaned ? Also how long do you usually wait before you AI the cows again ?

One comment in the video I thought was interesting was the drinking from nipple. The calf raiser mentioned feeding from the nipple being more beneficial as compared to feeding from the bucket specifically mentioning the aid of saliva "coagulating" the milk in the digestive tract? Is there university research to go along with that statement?

Babies need to be with their moms drinking their mom's milk, but this is probably the most humane I've seen as far as calf care.

Hi beejls, organic calves do drink their mom's milk (although it might be fed through a bottle or the bucket nipple system in this video). Just thinking back to when my own kids were babies...they drank my milk but sometimes from a bottle. :) Please let us know if you have additional questions!

this is cool and it's nice to see some farmers trying to do things more humanely. conventional factory dairy farming is just horrific... but separating mothers and babies is still a very sad practice. also the calves are being fed milk (via fake nipples) because it has been acknowledged as important and the best thing.. but their mom's make milk for them already..... so this is actually kinda weird.

Thanks for watching our eOrganic video! Just wanted to clarify a few things...some organic dairy farms do choose to separate calves but the calves receive fresh, cow's milk (especially colostrum in the early days). One of the organic dairy processors made a quick video on calf rearing that might be helpful: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7hllqWFyLDXm40.html

Some calves that are allowed to nurse on their mothers will continue to try and nurse other cows even after they are weaned. This damages udders to the point of killing off quarters. Some are even able to nurse on themselves. This doesn't happen if raised by humans. Calves can also spread diseases by nursing on multiple cows. I doubt these calves are kept with the mothers 24/7 as calves can try and drink more milk than they can handle ending up with scours which quickly leads to dehydration and death. Cows in heat (which happens every 16-21 days year round from 6 weeks after cows give birth) can injure or kill calves by trying to mount them. I only have a few cows but I now separate soon after birth. I tried calf sharing the first time and my cow ended up with her teats torn to shreds by her calf. Her daughter is one that has been very difficult to fully wean too. Now that she herself is pregnant she seems to have stopped but I have to keep a close eye on her. My cow also bullied our other cow's calf. So practices that you might label as 'cruel' are actually done for the safety and health of the whole herd.

Are there male calves?
@eOrganic
@eOrganic 10 жыл бұрын
Yup, like all mammals, cows give birth to both males and females.

eOrganic Does your cattle rearing apply only to the female calves? Ie do you also consider the males waste products and sell them to slaughterhouses?
@eOrganic
@eOrganic 9 жыл бұрын
artfuldodger494 Farmers rarely, if ever, consider anything they grow or produce as waste products; frankly organic cattle are way too expensive to waste them. Most male organic dairy cattle are sold for organic beef.

We appreciate as Hindus that you are allowing baby calf to be with mother and feeding them milk, and allowing them in groups. also APPRECIATE GIVING LIDOCAINE BEFORE REMOVING THE HORNES, AS IT WOULD MUCH LESS PAINFUL. ...I have promoted your humane practices in hindu/Indian Community.. do you guys allow male babies to be with cows also? if yes, for how long?

The difference between someone who drinks organic milk and someone who drinks conventional milk is about 30 kgs lol. Commercial milk is the worst stuff for your health. Organic milk all the way!
