Karl is fast! 1/4 second transitions and down to .14 seconds between shots! (Yes, I held a shot timer up to the computer).

Remember, the only difference between screwing around and science, is writing it down.

These drills would be good for using an airsoft gun at home to get that motion path and muscle memory down.

From what I can remember about doing 2 gun and 3 gun matches. This came out during the early 1990s after I got out of the Army the first time and started doing the early form of IDPA. I went back into the Army 4 months later and on my off duty time at Ft.Carson the SF guys were doing 2 and 3 gun stuff because either they developed these techniques or went to civilian schools like Thunder Ranch and other tactical schools. This type of training were non existent in infantry units. Doing room clearing with M16A2s. Speed reloading was instructed but never really enforced as a drill because as infantrymen you were taught from Basic and Infantry School to do this by instinct. I did teach my soldiers in my squad back then to do stand up rapid reloads and the use of the large ghost ring sights in the manner of a pistol shooter. My squad was tops during live fire maneuver exercises that my commander had noticed. I then had very interested soldiers going out with me doing IDPA matches on the weekends using my Taurus PT 92 9mm. I still back then had my first carbine which was a Colt CAR-15 with an M16A1 style large ring rear sight. My soldiers in my squad along with guys from the other platoons eventually bought their own personal weapons to compete against other soldiers and civilians in early IDPA style matches. Back then ammo was cheap also. The US Army and Marines started using IDPA style pistol and 2 gun style after the Iraq Invasion to train soldiers and Marines either prior to deployment or in theatre training to have a better gun fighter mentality. Now in the US Army, Marines, and other services are using civilian style IDPA/Law Enforcement competition style shooting incorporated into basic rifle marksmanship training after initial rifle qualification. Thus now it is part of a soldiers or individual rifleman's training requirement.

That's good training. One if the biggest skills you build is the proprioception connection with your trigger, you finger and your body so you learn how much pressure you need to break your shots without too much pressure to pull your rifle off target. Also the movement in sweeping across your targets is a skill much needed in combat rifle shooting. Well done!

Ian... I am a left handed AR shooter (not an operator): 1) ditch the bolt catch lever you have and go back to stock paddle. Your left hand index finger can drop the bolt with a standard paddle (if your fingers are too short, a smaller PG may help). For the charging handle: raptor arms or another brand ambi handle. 3) for the mag catch, get a NORGEN ambi mag catch. 1 and 3 pair well as your left index finger drops the mag... moves an inch and drops the bolt... slick setup. 1 and 2 allow you to lock an ar bolt back without breaking your firing grip (something a right handed cannot do!). Even better the NORGEN mag catch is harder to use the more full the magazine is. Prevents accidental releases and you use the regular mag catch for that (which makes sense since you want to retain the full mag and a left handed using a regular mag catch is essentially forced to grab the mag).

Those creases in Ian's dpms are immaculate.

I bought a timer (the same one) recently. It really make a huge difference, not only in having a metric to go by and adding a bit of pressure, but it also makes it difficult to fool yourself, and that alone makes a big difference.

VTAC comes up with some awesome drills . The VTAC 1-5 is my personal favorite. I do this drill with pistol and Carbine . I make up my own 1-5 with mag changes and malfunctions. Fasted time for me in 4.6 with carbine and 5.4 with pistol .

This is one the most interesting gun videos I've watched. You make concept type rifles and put them to the test.

I have Kyle Lamb's book, echo Karl's comments, highly recommend the book!!! He also has a pistol book, not as good as Green Eyes Black Rifles, but still a worthwhile read. The problem with the pistol book is pistols are harder and more varied so it seems to go in a generalized area. BTW I met Lamb, seems like a really nice dude.

What is slowing Ian down is his grip style with his off hand. Its great for increased accuracy but not so much for reflexive fire.

Perhaps, once you receive your HMG STG, you could perform these drills with that weapon?

Great video. Good drills. I remember a handgun drill in advanced officer training a few years back. I think it was a total of 10 rounds between 3 mags (i.e. 2 reloads) on 3 targets at 5 or 7 yards. The hoped for time was something like 6 seconds? I think (maybe 8). Almost nobody achieved it. I came within a couple of tenths because my P229 and i are old friends. The drill is harder than it sounds. Try it. Lot of good ideas here, and challenging yourself is key

we were taught point shooting in the army, out to 10-15 yards, you just look over the sights. much faster than quasi-aiming

Very good video. Ian could improve his time a bunch if he would work on his first shot, he's waiting for the beep to finish then deciding to shoot, it's much more efficient to listen for the start of the beep and automatically move to the target shooting as soon as the gun gets there.

Good drills but Throwing away magazines is a big military no-no. You can never assume your field resupply will come in magazines (usually just ammo boxes) and most issue mags are trash so odds are you are using your own mags anyways. Some units even have SOPs about tucking in your blouse in outside the wire so if you don't have time to put the empty back in your kit where your fresh one was you can throw it down your shirt until you get a spare moment.

Karl & Ian... I would really like to see you guys apply this technique to an intermediate range using a thermal site on wild hog eradication. I know it's not a match environment, but knocking down the maximum number of multiple moving targets would be interesting as hell!

Does Ian not have an ambi mag release? I have the same affliction and I use the Norgon release on a couple ARs. It fits inside the normal envelope and works quite well. I also have a Knights Armament ambi release, which is larger than normal but I think is a little harder to use

I suspect that mental skills are easier to relearn than purely physical abilities like strength, speed, or endurance.

Just from my experience, Ian could probably control recoil better if he squared up to the target a bit more and biased his weight forward. Also, when transitioning between targets, look at the target first, then let your sights follow. Good luck and I hope your shooting gets faster!

Is a standard box magazine more viable then a drum magazine for general use in a semi automatic rifle? I'm not sure about the D-60 but the Beta C-Mags and other assorted high capacity alternate magazine designs like casket or quad stack magazines usually tend to have a poor history of reliable function.

I shoot a match once that had the 1-5 drill setup as one of the runs. We had been shooting two hits on each target up until then, I'm embarrassed to say how I did.

Ian stands much straighter than Karl. It seemed to make a different in the “half & half” drill, where Ian’s body was being pushed backward over the course of the string and he had to work to stay upright.

The oppression of the right handed can't hold Ian back! I'm glad to see us lefties sticking it to the man!

I am a lefty. and instead of a BAD lever or the like, why not just reach up with your trigger finger and hit the bolt release? If used in conjunction with an ambi-mag release you can be as fast as a righty and have additional benefits when clearing a feedway malfunction (where you have to lock the bolt back as part of the clearing procedure). I have used a BAD lever and found it lacking- I would hit it when stripping a mag/pressing the mag release, sticks and debris would get caught in it, and if you bend it it can cause problems with the bolt locking back. If you feel the need there are modified bolt releases made by Seekins or Badger or Geissele (I haven't played with this one).

Do you think Ian's speed could be improved by squaring off his stance a bit more? Karl is a bit more squared-off and it looks like it's easier for transitions whereas Ian looks a little more bladed (could be just the camera angle). Ian's hips appear to be more strained when finally moving to the target farthest away from him.

What made you guys decide on a fixed buttstock on the WWSD rifles? Also side charging upper receivers have multiple speed advantages that can be used in the battlefield. among the improvements that you have made to modernize the rifle, why do you still use a fixed buttstock and a standard upper?
