We have subsequently also mud tested a Vietnam era Colt SP1 here:
• Mud Test: Mattel Death...
One of the first InRange videos included a mud test on an M1A (M14) in a modified Troy stock.
Recently we did a similar, yet more controlled, test on an M1 Garand. With not only our videos, we see people stating that the AK47 would have breezed through, along with many requests to perform the same test on the AK.
Well, here it is.
The AK47 mud test, InRange style.
Next week: The AR15.

People who keep commenting "get a Russian AK" should also note that VC's were equipped with Chinese AKs supplied by North Vietnam, just like the taliban are (apart from captured AKs during the Soviet invasion). Russian manufactured AKMs represent a small portion of rifles used.

It's pretty clear they aren't surprised of the results, which, should be pretty obvious. You shouldn't expect a weapon like this, with huge spaces for thick mud to settle, to function reliably. I have both Ar rifles and Ak variants. The Ak was NOT designed to function through this. It;s designed to be forgiving of neglect. I have a very reliable Ak74 but, if anybody asked me to do this to prove it, I'd call them a fool. The fact that some are commenting the way they are demonstrates their lack of understanding on fundamental mechanical principles much less how guns work. I challenge anyone who thinks this is an unfair test, duplicate it with your gun, post the entire video on KZfaq. Go ahead, I'll wait.

I’m so glad that you guys finally dispelled the myth about the infallibility of the AK. Yes, it can get pretty dirty and still fire, but not if you get it fairly muddy, which so many people say you can do and still fire the gun.

Well I've seen an ak get that muddy and still work, and I've seen an ak get that muddy and not work. Every single gun has its story. An individual ar can be more resilient than a best ak, and an individual ak can be better than the best ar. Those things are different with every gun depending on micro production flaws, age of the gun etc.

Лев Чумаков it works the same mechanically. And nobody would do that to a legit Russian AKM because they are cool and nice to have. The AK pattern is reliable when you leave it without a cleaning kit for 20 years and fire 1000s upon 1000s of rounds. Not when you bring it against the elements (sand, mud, etc). That’s for an AR.

A perfect demonstration of the true nature of the legendary AK47: it rarely requires stripping or an armorer to fix a jam, not that it never jams. 99% of problems can be solved by just working the crap out of that bolt. This is one reason the bolt is on the right-side, so you can use your strong arm to force it. Russians figured it was better to have a gun that always fired something than a gun that fired well only most of the time. There is much virtue to this concept in a military weapon. Thanks for helping correct this old misconception!
@stef6490
@stef6490 7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by old misconception?
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 7 жыл бұрын
Stef Literally. It is an old misconception, since at least the 1960s, that the Kalashnikov action is virtually incapable of failure. Karl and Ian had scores of people assuming the Kalashnikov here would fly through this test with no problems. It clearly has serious problems, but as Karl notes, it will continue to function in a manual fashion. This puts it miles ahead of most other military arms they have tested so far. but is far less than what many were claiming would be the case.

Let's do a competition between AK made out of steel plate and old Polish or Soviet AK milled in solid block of steel. One made out of steel block is more reliable, it's all about methods of production. Oh and remeber, you can basicly throw away half of components, use as shitty ammunition as you want and it'll still fire :)

Modern AKs mayby aren't most reliable rifles, but old Soviet still are. I saw myself the difference between AK from 1954 and AKM from 1978. Sergant from my country's army demonstrated that to Canadian troops stationed here. He throw them to mud, stood on them for about 10 minutes. Then he took AKs from mud, ol' AK was shooting without problems, modernised version jammed. This weapon was designed to be used by people with IQ similar to potato, so first version is the most reliable rifle, alongside some Browning's hunting rifles

When I was in the army we were using AKM (folding stock) and after crawling in the sandy mud we were 90% sure it wouldnt chamber rounds properly - all it takes is few grains of sand in the chamber. I guess if we were allowed to crawl with round already chambered it would protect chamber better, but since we couldnt the two things we could do was to cycle the bolt few times to shake sand out of the chamber and it would work if the sand wasnt particularry sticky, or we could wash it in the puddle. BTW, the only way to properly clean the trigger mechanism was to run water thru it, you could spend whole day to clean it with rugs otherwise and the trigger would still by so crunchy it would make you cringe. Anyway, the one thing AK is good about is that everything could be covered in worst shit possible, as long as the chamber and bolt is clean it would fire reliably

The AK isn't branded by "indestructible", and besides, this was a more-than-average test. It doesn't have a dust cover, as it's bolt is basically a dust cover, but overall is cheap, easy to clean and operates within -20 to 50 degrees celsius. Unless you not throw it, but submerge into mud, quicksand or some kind of gooey puddle it'll run just fine.

This doesn't surprise me at all. If you pack enough crud into any machine it will stop working. The only way to pass this test is to have a rifle that is so sealed off stuff can't enter in the first place. I've seen some mud tests done with the AR15 in other videos and it did quit well. That's because it is a very closed action when it comes to ingress of crud. All this doesn't mean the AK is unreliable or the AR is reliable. what it means is the AK doesn't do well with the mud test. The AK still does a very good job with fouling. It still has large parts that are relatively few. It still eats a wide variety of ammo and doesn't require specialized lubricants, magazines, etc to run at full capacity. This is still an interesting test and I am keen to seen how other rifles fair. I would really like to see some of the old bolt guns get put through their paces. I'm particularly curious to see if the Berthier holds up considering it has an open bottom to let the enbloc magazines fall out.

***** I wouldn't trust that filthy 14 to much. They picked a very good brand of rifle with a gas system 2 inches longer than standard issue. It was used to train recruits and that suggests a very controlled range. They used the best lube they could find and used a lot of it. It actually has been cleaned and parts have broken and been replaced (several extractors for example). The language of the article is hyperbolic claiming it contaminates other things by proximity. Really? I think the author might be overstating things a bit. Oh, also it was cleaned. The author claims it was cleaned "once and only once" at 26,245. Then he goes on to say it was cleaned at 28,905 round point. He's a liar or is using some weasel terms. With that kind of writing I can't trust any of the other findings which is to bad. Unfortunately, I find a lot of this stuff when reading up on the AR15 series. I would much rather hear something like: "This rifle sucked when it was introduced and people died because of defects in the design, production and deployment. The military looked at this and fixed a lot of the immediate issues so it would function. After that it worked well enough but has proven hard to tweak without causing serious issues. As of now it's achieved a good level of performance and will continue to see use in military and civilian circles for years to come."
@danmorgan3685
@danmorgan3685 8 жыл бұрын
Actually I'm less interested in the rifle and more interested in the history. As I mentioned earlier I do believe they have improved greatly over the years but I would like to think our system could have produced a better weapon. The point about the changes in powder are true but since the rifle was produced by a system that used contractors the design should have accounted for that. The FN-FAL has an adjustable gas system to site but one example. Ditching direct gas impingement have having an adjustable gas system could have helped a lot. A bolt handle would have been a nice idea too.
@danmorgan3685
@danmorgan3685 8 жыл бұрын
MavHunter20XX I can see piston systems in AR causing issues. The rifle was built with direct impingement in mind. To me that just shows how deep the flaw in the design actually runs. Also it could indicate some shitty engineering on the part of designers. Both are neither here nor there as we've gone into the realm of near pure opinion. I've been discussing this issue with my much more knowledgeable brother and he pointed out some successful DI rifles. So the problem may be with the AR in particular. Though he felt the issue was more the combination of DI with the 5.56 mm cartridge. The Swedes had a DI rifle in 6.5 Swede that didn't have the same issues for example. Granted 6.5 Swede is a nice cartridge. The adjustable gas system would need a bit of training but that isn't much to ask. Especially if that bit of training offers a real improvement in performance which is yet to be determined with a purely hypothetical AR.

That is in fact a Romanian AK, not a Russian or Yugoslavian AK like what Americans were encountering in Vietnam. Yes, there is a difference between them. The Romanian AK is to Soviet Block weapons what the M-16 is to American weapons, unreliable, poorly engineered, and just plain bad. The AK-47s in Vietnam were impossible to jam. Just ask the Vietnam veterans.

The thing about the AK-47 isn't about convenience, it's about keeping soldiers combat effective with minimal maintenance and training. The gun is meant to be simple, not perfect. It does it's job. You can strip half the gun and it still shoots, not pretty, but it shoots. Kalashnikov would be proud.

The whole 'AK47 can be fired covered in mud' is people not understanding the rep of the AK. The AK's rep has always been that it needs virtually no maintenance or cleaning to work, and is super simple to operate. So you can give it to some untrained militia and they can use it just fine. Another genuinely interesting test would be to leave an AK and an AR on a shelf for 5 years then fire then and see which holds up, see if the AK lives up to its rep.
