I am in Puning, Guangdong. This village is known for its staggering Lantern Festival, which is held just after the New Year's Celebration. It is more of a deity parade, where the village worships the deities according to different traditions.
It is one of the most stunning events I have ever been. There were thousands of lanterns, fireworks, people within the parades.
Join me on this intriguing deity parade in Guangdong Province 🎬

Hi Yan 👋🏻 we celebrated this in Malaysia too... the largest one is held at Johor ancient temple Chingay festival - the grandest deities parade in Malaysia . I'm so glad that we kept most of the chinese traditions here 🎉.

Your programming is such a blessing. While I spent eight years living and traveling in China, I now realize that I missed out on some wonderful culturally rich traditions and festivals because I did not know about them. Also, traveling during one of the golden weeks is a horrible experience for me. I do hope that China and other journalistic organizations reward you for your outstanding work.

In my hometown, they celebrated the deity parade more than CNY too.on the 15th,few lucky men were selected to dress up as the deities.they needed to undergo few rituals and needed to fast where they can only eat veggies and no meat few days earlier.let me tell you, these men-deities werent drunk but they werent lucid, sort of being possessed.they will wear heavy fanciful garments, barefoot and have their faces pierced with long thin rod or small knives, sometimes on their cheeks, sometimes their tounges.the procession will be lead by the lion dances from selected house to house.then followed by these deities on foot.there were many palenquins carrying sort of small pagodas by other men.but these deities will be lead by a 'shaman?' and a god of wealth.at the houses they stopped, they will be blessing the house owners and finished it up by walking away from the house through fire or hot coals. Yes,the women werent in the procession and any onlookers needed to stay far behind from the men. When i was a child and being curious, they will scare me when i got too close by saying if the deities saw me,they will kidnap me and carry me away because im a girl and im wearing red.so i ran back home and hide for the rest of the day.

It's quite present in a lot of culture to do some chance based divination but with a lot of "negociation" with the deities, allowing to rethrow the "chance" until you get good results. That said, i thing there is still the perception that if it takes too long, it might be that something isnt quite right (it's still divination after all)

Your videos pull me right in and nothing can distract me. I get so absorbed that the time flies by and Im always a bit sad to see it come to an end. Thank you for letting us live vicariously through you and for showing us so many fascinating and beautiful things.

I have seen photos of similar Lantern festivals, but never seen a video of such an event. I can sense the enthusiasm, and the seriousness of the locals wanting to celebrate this important day. The atmosphere can be Intimidating with so many people holding a club, so many fires, and so many fire crackers bursting. Let's hope for a new tradition to happen in the near future where females have a position in the festival, celebrating such an important day inclusively in the entire village. Thank you for the video, Yan.

Hi Yan! You are on the front row of leading women who depend on your own brain rather than on luck or some illusory power. The world is fast changing and "descendents" have to think fast and make their own choice and should be wise enough to take a path for happy living in the modern world where belief systems are finding no place anymore. It is up to them anyways. Lovely video dear! 😘❤

Very interesting ,The Lantern festival, Madam,I think you had the right idea to go to a quieter spot ,your only a Little lady, I never seen so many people in one time 40,000 people in the village, in my home Town of Biloela Central Qld ,there is only 5000 people in roughly 28,000 square Km ,it was a little frightening for me, I did enjoy the Fire Works & The Lanterns, I found it rather strange that Women werent allowed in the front Row, I thought if the Men didnt have a Mother how would they be Born and wouldnt be able do this, I have seen and old video in one area of China where the Girl child was drowned in the village & only boys were keeped by their Fathers & the Mothers were broken Hearted , It had taken a rather Elderly County Judge to stop this tragic drowning he was a wonderful Man, he had stopped this tradition from happening, He made new laws & helped the people make a better life for the Family, Girl Children were now Kept, These old traditions will change over time for the better, I like the Chinese New Year ,lots of food, & celebrations & loud Fire Crackers & Lantern Thank you Madam for a Great video, Cheers & Best Wishes, Keep Safe, Regards Trevor.W.Bacelli. 1.

Very beautiful to see this! We also have similar festivals in India where gods are carried out of their temples in a parade, and of course there is Diwali as well. I play a game called Genshin Impact through which I came to know about this festival in Game for the first time and now seeing it through your video. Hopefully one day I will be able to visit China and see it in real life. Thanks a lot for the beautiful video!

I am Cantonese by descent. Love and miss the food you showed! Wow! I am amazed at the bon fires of straws in the alleys…seems so dangerous. Any fire accident could easily burn the town! There must be some fire prevention measures in place right?! The lanterns are very nice, and the enthusiasm of the celebrations is impressive indeed! Old China and traditions sure do not die ! Glad for that…but must include women in future celebrations!

Puning may be in Guangdong Province. But the people there are what we Malaysians call Teochew Nang (Chaozhou people). They speak a Minnan dialect; we Hokkians can understand them in Malaysia, as we are exposed to their speech. Besides Hokkian (Hokkien is not so accurately transliterated) is also Minnan. I think they call their place "Pou Ling" in Teochew. We have many Teochew people in Malaysia and Singapore. In Thailand, the majority of the Chinese and their descendants are Teochew. Teochew and Cantonese are not mutually comprehensible. By the way, I love Chaozhou cuisine; they're great.

Hallo! little fairy brave Chinese girl. I was eagerly awaiting your fresh vlog. The new year's lantern festival was amazing. The world, especially the west should acknowledge the freedom Chinese people enjoy celebrating their cultural & religious events. May it be Muslims, Budist or others. Unlike the west, there is no hate or religious phobias amongst them. This thawarts the western colonial mentality propaganda against China. What to talk about Taiwan as part of China, even the border areas in India with chinese linguist names of passes & heights were & are parts of China. I am a great admirer & lover of China. Little brave fairy Chinese keep it up & Keep smiling. An aged well-wisher from friendly Pakistan
