INSANELY Tall - Norfolk Southern's New River Railway Bridge in Tennessee

The second-tallest railway bridge in the United States is the New River Cantilever Truss Bridge located near the communities of New River and Helenwood, Tennessee. Opened on July 10th, 1963 by the Southern Railway, this massive structure stands 307'5" high with a span of 1,622ft over its namesake waterway. The bridge is located on Norfolk Southern's CNO&TP line which runs between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The railroad itself is owned by the City of Cincinnati via the Cincinnati Southern Railway. High Bridge of Kentucky, also located on the CNO&TP line in Wilmore, is technically the tallest in the United States by only 7 inches. There are other bridges that are higher but they are supported by canyon walls as opposed to the structures themselves.

Ladies and gents , you have just viewed two or more trains crossing the New River Bridge. Great video guys ! I shot here in the early 80's and it was one busy place . Trains even had red cabooses then ! I have walked across this great structure several times. Trains used to run in fleets and using a handheld scanner gave me assurance of not getting caught half way . This place is simply magical. Wish I had a drone back then !! Again great work !!

I think the distinction that is usually made that I've seen is that the High Bridge is the tallest double track railway bridge in the US.

Just wondering as most sources seem to show High Bridge, as reconstructed 1911, to be 308 feet above mean water level of Kentucky River and just as tall (tho one source does show 306) what are Norfolk Southerns official height listings for both bridges?

I've always heard new river was 2 or 3 foot shorter. Been over both of them . new river single track . and I think at first high bridge was single track . it was raised in time it's now double track . They say high brings will expand and contract 36 inches during the seasons . There was some special engineering features to accommodate that I can't explain it but if you was ever under it you'll see some features like you never seen before . there both pretty high . it will make your stomach feel queasy and you pray you dont derail going over either one. I think the speed limit is 40 mph over them if I remember correctly .

That's a huge trestle and nice footage, I have an old NS VHS tape with an in cab ride aboard a GP-60 on a Triple Crown train in the 90s crossing the trestle!🛤🚂👍

I was recently in Tennessee in in June and I caught a CSX DPU train etowah yard Tennessee but I didn't have a chance to see the locomotives in the front only 1 locomotive in the middle Tennessee and the whole southeast has a bunch of dpu trains

Great video! Appreciate the drone views, the sequences were impressive. I have to wonder if the train crews get a little nervous this high off the ground....a derailment would be catastrophic at this height.

Amazing how long that train is. I think this bridge is higher than Lackawanna's Tunkhannock Viaduct.

While not discussed in the comment pinned about misnomers and bridges that technically don't count as the tallest, wouldn't the BNSF rail bridge over the Crooked River in Oregon be taller? By roughly 10-12' of difference?
