All insects were collected between July - November in Raleigh, NC, except the bush katydid which was from New Hampshire.

My whole life I've loved two things: math/engineering and arthropods. I thought long and hard before college and chose engineering. (Artist here too) I think human forms are the best for creating monsters, bugs are very alien, but human bodies are so familiar to us that it creates a much more eerie and uncomfortable feeling to recognize something as human-ish but seeing there is something horrificly wrong about it. This is why Slenderman's design and Freddy Krueger's long arms scene work so great. Watch the movie "Before I Wake" and see the scene where a guy hugs his deceased wife as she is remembered by their son. Gives me goosebumps just thinking of it xD Ted Cruz would scare me much much more than any animalistic monster regardless tho. Or Mark Zuckerberg 👀 Bill Gates.... I'll have trouble sleeping tonight...

I know this is a bit random and specific but thank you so much for putting this footage out on the internet! It’s incredibly useful for animators like me to have a reference handy whenever we animate so as to make our work fluid and lifelike, and having video analysis of bugs taking flight is something that would be difficult for most of us to find! I really love bugs especially, so it makes me happy to see this video, knowing I have it as a resource for the movement of bugs :)

But I don't know where to refer him for gaining a more richer and deep knowledge regarding how to better make animation. Is there anything ( any educational sites , apps or academic tools ) you'd suggest for him to look into for obtaining a more thorough knowledge of the subject?

Love this video! The weevils especially are so cute. I'm surprised at how smooth the assassin bug seems to fly. Every time I've seen them fly, they're really loud and not very nimble in the air.

thanks! I gotta figure out how to film more mid-air sequences. I think lift off and mid-air might give different portrayals of these insects, like the assassin bug. The methodical and steady liftoff might be misleading to how it actually gets around once its up there!

@@AntLab maybe you'll need multiple cameras pointed at the most likely trajectory... perhaps a custom-made enclosure to encourage the bugs to fly on a set trajectory with a landing zone at the end (possibly with some tasty treat). just spitballing tho, no idea if this is the best way - just that it's probably gonna be extremely difficult to follow a small insect with a slow-mo camera in macro focus.

It's hard to explain, but when I see a fly take off in real life, it just kind of does it without hesitation. You poke it and it instantly goes in to creative mode 😂 But this video shows how insanely complex they are when taking off, and due to their size, they can do all the movements in a split second, unlike bird that you see visibly jumping and flapping their wings. Flies are just a blur to us, but magnificently complex and beautiful when slowed down to a speed that out eyes can see. Thankyou for uploading such interesting and amazing content!

If it was just air quality then we'd have had giant dragonflies in the 1700s but we didn't. It is curious though why they stopped growing so large...

I love how the marchfly lifts it's forelimbs almost directly laterally as though it's thinking "take me God, I'm ready to ascend!"

It seems to me there is more going on to create lift for the weight of the body to aspect ratio of the wings. Maybe the energy comes from frequency and vibration neutralizing the affect of air density on the weight or so called gravity and the wings are used more like ailerons to control direction especially if you consider a strong side wind.maybe the aeather does exist.

They would have needed a skeleton then to sustain the body and possibly wider/thicker legs proportionally to the main body. Bugs and spiders have a much softer skeleton structure (don't know in english ,we call it "brusk" in Norway) . How gravity works is that you need a proportionally tougher bone and muscle mass the bigger/heavier you are. So the insect type of body would probably not work much. That is why all of them are small

Weevils look like some sci-fi little transformer robots coming up with hidden parts and stuff. It's quite an evolution feat to have such complicated wings that work so well with their peculiar body shape.

Assassin bugs are so cool when watching them eat but the moment it starts to fly, I run in the opposite direction 😂

I love weevils and their long noses (or whatever they're called). That's cool how their wings are folded underneath and when they extend them they're so long.

This is fantastic. I’ve always loved assassin bugs. Used to catch em out in the easement all the time, very cool to see the efficiency of their flight in slow motion.
