A quick tour of the innards of a class 50. Sorry it's a bit brief... it's the first time I've tried to make a video :)

Phwoar! That’s one gorgeous loco, inside and out! The 50s really do deserve the love they get!

I am in diesel heaven!!!!! Thanks for this, it reawakens my childhood train rides. Every summer we traveled to England from Switzerland to see my grandparents in Lyme Regis. We took the train from Woking to Axminster. I loved every minute of that ride .

As a kid who grew up in the early 80's watching and sometimes cabbing class 50's ( riding in the cab as the loco ran around the racecourse special trains at Newbury ) this short video took me back. Thanks for sharing and all the hard work you guys put into keeping the 50's alive. I must visit one day. Cheers. Would love to see longer videos and more insight.

A time of transition. They had air brakes from new, but still had vacuum as well, the last main line passenger class to be so fitted. They were also ETH only, no steam heat, which most previous classes had.

I do like to see the insides of Loco`s and the dials and what they do, so often ignored. Thank you for this.

Nice first attempt at showing the Hoovers insides. Hopefully one day our (Devon Diesel Society) loco D402 will sound as sweet. Brilliant.

They were beautiful things. Used to watch them coming up to New Street - 50010 Monarch was always the one to look out for. Sometimes a double header, they used to say it had a 50-50 chance of getting there ;-)

Yes I remember it well as a Shunter at Penzance, and the Driver starting it on the “rack” sometimes. Can anyone explain what that means ?
@Compasscard5 жыл бұрын
It appears to be more quiet inside than out. Also less oil haze/smoke :)

As a Shunter at Penzance for many years,i can remember Drivers starting 50s "on the rack" does anyone know what that means.
@fiftyfund66808 жыл бұрын
Basically, if the engine is lazy to start, or cold, or sometimes if the batteries aren't too clever, you can give them a bit of a helping hand by pushing on the fuel rack. It forces a bit more fuel into the cylinders.

@@fiftyfund6680 Thanks for replying, if the batteries were too flat, we’d have to drag the Loco out to the shed for repairs.

0:42 what was that very old kind of looking crane wagon standing beside your locomotive?
@fiftyfund66804 жыл бұрын
Not sure. Some piece of pway kit I guess. This was filmed leaving Corfe Castle, so that will belong to Swanage Railway.

You must be incredibly psychologically robust to go into the engine compartment at all. I'd have a panic attack in seconds from claustrophobia.

Why do so many men always have their heads out the passenger car windows in England? Is it because they eat a lot of bangers and cabbage; just wondering.
