Fifth of a series of films that looks at the locomotives of the Watercress Line. This is the story of Class 50 - 50027 'Lion'.

Great video, the 50's are my favourite diesel class! One minor niggle though, Laira is pronounced Lair-a, rather than Lie-ra

Another good presentation. A historical issue that might not be well known outside the signal engineering trade is that when they were transferred to the Western Region, they drew attention to some built in problems with signal positioning in some areas, as they were the first loco class on the WR capable of actually running up to 100 mph. They could be a bit ‘hairy’ as it were, with a 12 car load on in some places, such as between Reading & Swindon. There was a lot of (literal) paperwork done on the whole lot on the Main Line, with some bits and pieces with lower restrictions being imposed temporarily until it was sorted out (roughly 90 or 95). It had never been an issue with the new HSTs, as they have much better braking, nor with the 52s and 47s, so the limits were dual ones, like 125/90, or whatever. I can remember doing some work on that in my early years in the 1980s, in Reading.

3:48 just a quick note, THAT is not the HMS Lion you were intending to show. The HMS Lion that 50027 is named for was built in 1910, and had 4x2 13.5 inch guns, whereas the Lion you're showing is from World of Warships, which uses a fictionalised design based on the 1939 HMS Lion proposal that was never finished.

forgive me, but the image at 3:48 is not the Battlecruiser Lion, which is shown correctly in the next image. That is a image from the World of Warships Game, which has a 'HMS Lion' based on the proposed plan for a 'new' Lion Class Battleships which was planned in the late 1930's but delayed by the outbreak of WWII and then cancelled altogether. Great Video though...

Adrian just watching and you beat me to it as you say is of the proposed Lion Class Battleship follow up to KGVs which were never built.

Out of curiosity do you still have your class 47 I remember in early 2011 going on one of your heritage DMU’s with an open viewing window and it broke down and had to be hauled by a class 47 for the day you had around somewhere it was still had GBRF colour scheme and grey livery on it.

47579 is still at The Watercress Line, named ‘James Nightall GC’.

great video, as i understand it these locos suffered from flashovers on the main generator if going over 100mph, so they were cut down to 90mph, 2/, if the clowns at BR had looked after them better they would not have broken down so much, i used to see them at waterloo smoking like a 9f when idling. and looking very sad, thank goodness for mr Fuller for saving LION.

Was the main generator ever retrofitted to an alternator & rectifier to eliminate flashovers ?

@@Martindyna No, the refurbishment didnt include the replacement of the DC main generator with an AC alternator and this was always to dog the class until the end. If BR had instead replaced it with an Alternator, Ive no doubt they would have lasted much longer. At the time they were built, this generator was a fairly small machine but it was running at maximum output so its little wonder that it would be a problem later on, especially when dirt ingress occurred.
