Located between Austin and San Antonio is a quaint tiny house known as Yellow Rose Cottage. Inspired by her love of restoration and recycled materials, Sherry McKinley decided to lean into the French influence of her vintage and antique finds while decorating the 460 sq ft home. The resulting aesthetic is breathtaking and truly one-of-a-kind, featuring reclaimed windows, a found-stone fireplace, and elegant gold touches throughout. Building this tiny house in the heart of Texas Hill Country took a little over nine months and about $95,000, but the satisfaction from it has been a priceless highlight of retirement.

Man, do I agree! Besides being very bland, none of this stuff is made to last, from the windows/doors, to the furnace. Pretty much garbage! It's sad, frustrating, and ironically, more expensive, which is a real kick in the pants.

I agree, too. I lived in an old house with nothing but windows like that. Loved it. I now live in a very old, small house, but the owners replaced all the windows with the Pella types. Although they're double pane, they're a pain in the neck to lock correctly.

I’m English and we value those old techniques deeply here. You are lucky that in the US you can pick up bargains as many don’t understand or appreciate the craftsmanship. I’m afraid those beautiful sash windows would have cost thousands here in London reclaimed.

Im redoing my kitchen in a 50s retro style, using actual 50s stuff. The goal is to not waste and reuse and do it all for cheap. Habitat for humaity restore has been my friend!

You might consider a SolaTube in the bath. They don't allow heat or cold, like a skylight, but provide a tremendous amount of natural daylight. Some come with a solar night light for evening as well. We've installed three over the years and they are WONDERFUL.

What a beautiful French house!! You did a fantastic job; and what a fun thing to do in retirement:) My husband and I decorate together all the time. One of the most poignant things we did is when we decorated a guest bedroom while he had very serious cancer. We thought he would be going on to glory bc the cancer was very aggressive and he was only given a 3 to 6 months to live, basically palliative treatment until he passed. After many prayers from many people, his cancer changed mid treatment!! A miracle really!! So, now, almost 7 years later, we’re still decorating!! Thanks be to God!!! We’re thinking about a guest house next!! This gives me a lot of inspiration!! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!! God bless!!

I think this is just their retirement project. From a few things she said-it's on their ranch and there may be more than one tiny house. They did a great job-the cottage is beautiful!

Old windows with counterweights are stellar. I was blessed to have those in my apartment as a college student. I wish windows were all made that way still--they operate so smoothly and are so very functional.

It just sounded like maybe the tiny houses you were familiar with had "crawl in bedrooms" vs "walk-ins" and in a way that's exactly the difference. Thanks My tiny house has a basement, attic crawlspace and a "walk-in bedroom. I love it!! Words are a Wonderful Thing!!

The only thing missing is a French cottage garden around the Yellow Rose. Great start with purple flowers in front of the porch. Just need more height with varying hues of lavender to amethyst, coral colors to accent, and of course yellow roses. It would be super fun to design with an arbor, trellis, and textures galore!

@@faithradaQuicken Loans defines a tiny house as 500 sq ft or under. United Tiny Homes defines tiny as 600 sq ft or under. Since this house is 460, it qualifies.

All the windows (except in the basement) were replaced in our 100 year old house by previous owners. I’m bummed. I wish they had left them. They also put siding on the house. If I ever win the lottery, I’m going to remove all of it! This house is adorable!

I live in San Antonio and I live Tiny Homes. My studio apartment is 480 square feet, but this cottage makes my studio look like a shoebox. She did an amazing job with design and space. I really hope she is living her best life.

What an eye for design this woman has! My 1917 built house on Long Island originally had those weight and pulley windows, but they would never stay up unless they were fully opened. They always had to be propped up to stay at whatever height we wanted. We replaced them with double-paned insulated ones.

So much charm & labor of love in this little cottage! We live in a new home in FL with a stainless steel sink.🤮 I've been on the look out for a timeless porcelain sink like the one I grew up with in our NYC apartment that was 70 yrs old without a scratch on it! ❤
