If you call it a waste ,then you are a full, now than ever , those houses are needed as many may choose to go back and build back your land, cos their businesses are being destroyed everywhere.

I agree with you. Calling it a waste is totally off putting and she’s Igbo? Perhaps it’s vocabulary issue or naivety, really surprising. Might be waste to you but certainly not a waste to the people who own them and know why they built them. Edit: after watching the video, I don’t know if it is click bait but we should be intentional about the words we use about ourselves. She clearly said in the video it isn’t waste and the title should reflect it. And its nothing to do with the war as people who live abroad still build at home, it’s an Igbo thing to remember where you’re from and most Igbos prefer to retire in the village so makes sense to build a befitting home for yourself

Nice video. However, it has always been traditional for Ibos to build in their homestead (even in pre-colonial times, as evidenced in China Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” first published in the 1950s). The relatively recent political/religious strive and the Civil War may have heightened it, but these are NOT the cause. Tradition and culture is the reason.

Igbos believe in community and in the village different kinds of ceremonies takes place weather the clan meetings, burial, meeting at age grade, family meeting and traditional marriage. And no one wants friends to show and nothing to show or the compound might not contain many people. I think all these gatherings including Xmas, Easter and New yam festival makes mandatory that Igbo ls go visit home many times a year. Some people go home every week depending on distance.

Guys, stop all these needs to explain why someone chooses to build any kind of structure they want on their ancestorial lands. What makes a man a full-fledged man in Igbo culture right from time immemorial are house, wife, and kid. It has nothing to do with civil war. There were few-storey buildings in some Igbo villages before the civil war. Igbos have been identifying with their villages because of cultural heritage - 4 traditional marriage ceremonies are culturally mandated to be performed strictly in the villages of the bridal father's family compound(3 of 4) and (1) in the groom's family compound - inviting families of the bride and members of her father's clans to know where the ancestorial compound of their potential in-laws(groom). This culture predated the colonial era to date. In recent times, more especially in insecurities, some people are having traditional marriages in cities which was a taboo in Igboland, just like burying a fully-fledged Igbo person outside his ancestorial village whether they died in the city or overseas residency. are you aware, that before Igboman builds a house in the city he must build first in his village otherwise people around him would see him as "efulefu". We have moved from thatched huts to zinced huts to modern houses and mansions. Mansions are based on capital capabilities nothing more - it has nothing to do with culture nor civil war. Affordability! Cultural demand is anything that can shelter. one's family. White people/westerners build cottages away from their family's residence according to their taste and financial capacity for vacations, some of them visit the cottages a few times than some Igbos visit their village mansions. Where do you want a rich Igbo man to host his quests, in-laws, family, and others? In the hotels? The average Igbo man visits his village more than 6 times a year, some frequently, almost every weekend for either kindred/village meetings, burials, traditional marriages, yam festival, etc. Depending on how far away they live from the village and their financial capabilities.

You have received a lot of blow-backs about the term "waste" in your title, deservedly. The least you can do now is edit your title and remove the word waste or at least enclose it in inverted commas to indicate that you do not own it. This is yet another indication that Igbo people after years of battering in Nigeria have begun to adopt the lexicon of their traducers in describing themselves. Another example is Igbo people saying Obodo "Oyinbo" to describe overseas instead of decidedly Igbo Obodo Oyibo. Sad. Please note that the village is the centre of the Igbo cultural, political, social life. What you are seeing is a modernisation of that setting in the context of Igbo historical experiences. For example, Igbo people make friends around the world and you wouldn't expect them to invite them to decrepit villages where open defecation is the norm. The same people who criticize Igbo village "waste" can pawn their family heirlooms to fund lavish urban parties. The talk of asokoro, maitama and other such exotic places in the context of Igbo ancestral villages is not good, probably ignorant.
