I’m venturing into rural Senegal in order to meet one of the largest ethnic groups in Senegal - the Fulani people. When I’m told that the village chief would like to meet me, I can’t help but feel nervous. Tourists aren’t common in the village and, as with the rest of West Africa, cameras are often not welcome in Senegal.
In this travel vlog we dive deep into Fulani culture, learning about their daily lives and how the modern world is changing their traditional ways forever.

I must say it's so fascinating to see what village life is like and to get an appreciation for the life and all that I have here in Canada - and sometimes take for granted. I love the vibrant colours and patterns of the clothes on women in the village. That must have been so cool to meet the chief - but yes probably overwhelming feeling. Very cool to learn about their culture there.

I agree that learning about other cultures is so interesting and changes how we view the world. There is so much emphasis on community in Senegal and it's forced me to look at how much community there is in my life and to improve relationships with family and friends.

This people might seem poor but in fact they’re the richest, because they still speak their language (and don’t insert loan words here and there). Same thing used to happen to Turks, back when the Ottoman elite refused to speak “the language of the poor” preferring to speak Arabic and Persian instead. So, the word “Turk” meant a simple minded, poor person whereas “Osman” meant educated, noble and rich. And only in 1920s they realised that all that time it had been those poor people who preserved the real Turkish language that is spoken till this day and makes them proud of it. Maybe, African governments will also stop chasing western phenomena and let Africa keep moving its own way - the way of an African man who doesn’t have to learn French or English in order to get a job or leave their homeland to move overseas.

To me Africa is always my home and its true coz human civilization started from Africa.. but i feel so sad and unhappy whenever ppl from other races look down and behave racist towards these Africans... I love how the video was made and you have really showed the culture of Senegal and venturing into a different kind of adventure. I feel like I was watching a documentary in National Geographic. Continue doing this kind of videos going the off-beaten path and just really exploring and experiencing the culture. It would be super cool to meet the chief of the village, it is like you are meeting the Queen of some sort :)

It does look nice, doesn't it? 😊 There were lots of new houses within the village (the rectangular ones made with cement with aluminium roofs) which were a lot better than the previous houses. I think one of the reasons that the mosque looks so good in comparison is because it has been rendered and painted. Building new houses can take a while and sometimes it can take years before a house is rendered like this. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts!

There isn't sufficient waste disposal infrastructure in place throughout the country. Unlike where you or I live, many villages here don't have waste collection services so many people in rural areas have limited options on what to do with waste. I witnessed a lot of waste getting burnt as well which also isn't good. Thank you for watching! I travelled with a very knowledgeable local guide who knew pretty much everyone and so felt safe for my trip 😁

@@EllaMcKendrick Thank you for your reply, but be honest. The garbage is everywhere because they are sloppy. Otherwise, explain why the garbage is EVERYWHERE as opposed to piled in only one spot. Again, nevermind reality. You have ideology and a narrative. Be careful. Many "tourists" have been hurt by travelling where they should not go.
