I was 6 months old when this was filmed 😜 I just turned 43. Over the last year or so, I’ve had this odd longing to go back in time. Things are so generic, impersonal, unsatisfying these days - maybe I’m a dreamer, I dunno. I think things now just suck. These videos catapult me for 10 minutes to a time when cell phones and social media didn’t exist. Aging sucks - but that’s not why I want to go back. I’d take being 43 in 1980 over 2023 any day. Thanks for sharing these moments in history. By the way - I grew up here in Los Gatos, CA and remember shopping at Safeway as a kid. The clanging of the big metal carts, the chime on the loudspeaker, it all came rushing back! 😊

And the benefits are still pretty good only $15 dollars for medical for your spouse and free for the employee! And they’re still awaiting another raise soon I hear, topping them out at 28.50. So I think it’s still a good job.

This is amazing. It’s like traveling back in time. Love the attention to detail by the film crew, showing things such as the receipt tape printing, the shopping cart return, the products on the shelves, inside shopping carts, etc. In addition to that, I was only one years old when this was filmed but my Dad worked at Safeway at the time. I feel like I am stepping into his world and getting a new perspective on how things were.

My first job was at Safeway in 1986 right out of high school. They actually sent their cashiers to a 5 day expenses paid checkers training seminar back in those days. At the time, the grocers union was strong, and all of the grocery chains had not yet been monopolized as they are now.

@@Cfchild1I know this is old comment but, Yes, and ever since Albertsons bought Safeway, it went bad to worse. I remember a Safeway worker told me he got paid $10/hour, and later his wage increased to $20/hour in *1 year,* but this was back in the early 1990s before it became monopolize in 2008 since Albertsons bought it. Right now Safeway is a $hitty company that pays you in pennies, and they only give you 20 hours to 24 hours a week, and you have to wait 10 years to get a sinority status to get those 40 hours a week you wanted, and so as the time schedules with better benefits. Let's be realistic here, we don't have 10 years, and the only people that gets to have full time shifts are the managers, and team leadership. Favoritism plays a huge role on the company, and now more, and more new workers are leaving because they aren't given the 40 hours a week as they promised with little pay, especially the checkers. That is why tell people to stay away from applying Safeway, and never trust the managers in Safeway, they are nothing more that cold hearted, and pathological liars.

As a kid in the ‘80s, I remember eating a lot of junk food, yet I was still scrawny. I think the difference today is that people don’t get nearly as much exercise as they used to. I remember walking all over the neighborhood with my friends, riding bikes, running around in the back yard….Video games were very rudimentary (I never played them) and we had only a few TV channels, so we were forced to entertain ourselves in more physically active ways. And of course there was no Amazon delivery or even restaurant delivery-I remember it was a big deal when Pizza Hut started delivering, which I think was sometime in the ‘90s. If you wanted to buy a product or food, you had to actually go out and get it.

The reason people could eat bread and sugar in the 40s through early 80s and not become obese or diabetic was because it was NATURAL CANE SUGAR, not the chemical crack they use in everything today known as High Fructose Corn Syrup (HCFS). In addition, the bread back then was healthy NON GENETICALLY MODIFIED GRAINS, NOT SATURATED IN MONSANTOS ROUND UP and they added healthy, metabolism boosting IODINE to the bread back then as well. Today, these evil bastards who are pawns of satan add BROMINE instead of iodine to the mass produced bread products. This "bromine" is the main component in TERMITE POISON!!! This is why everyone is FAT because our bodies store the POISONS IN THE FAT TO PROTECT THE ORGANS!! THIS IS ALL DONE WITH MALICE

Good find. I worked in a grocery store in 83-85 and this is how I remember it. Checkers had to manually input the prices and put codes in for the produce. Union checkers made 11.55/hr in southern california in 1984. You could buy a house back then on that wage if you had a good size down payment. My family and I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area when I was a toddler, just a few years after this video was shot, and I have memories of us doing our grocery shopping while living there at the nearby Safeway. Even though there had been some minor changes to the interior and some new/different products on the store shelves by the time we lived there, and the fashions were a little different, my goodness does this still look a lot like the Safeway we shopped at. I even remember the beautiful huge windows toward the entrance/cashier area and the brown/beige color scheme of the interior of the store being very much like this one. Thank you for the amazing jog down memory lane for me with this video, even if 1980 was a bit before my time.

This is indeed the “social Safeway” on Wisconsin Ave. in Georgetown DC. It’s an affluent neighborhood so people might be somewhat better dressed here. The store here was brand new at the time, having opened in May 1980. I remember my uncle talking about the controversy over the new store which was replacing a 1950s Safeway on the same spot because the locals objected to the large parking lot out front, whereas the old store was directly on the sidewalk. He said (snooty) Georgetownians thought cars were ugly and wanted the car park put in back. Ironically this store was demolished in 2009 and replaced by a new Safeway which is once again located on the sidewalk, this time with a parking garage for the ugly cars.

@tristezzalamentoluciano265 I think that's not 100% true. You assume it was a happier time because of your limited viewpoint or your lack of a wide look into people's lives. Divorces were becoming a common occurrence. Teens felt isolated, and stressed due to having to live up to standards instead of choosing their own path, and that's even before social media became prevalent. No one paid any close attention to the rampant predatory practices of corporations selling products to kids. People interacted for sure, but that's nothing special. Reagan and his administration screwing everyone but the 1%ers over to this very day Idk where the idea of less convenience made for adventures came from, but I think you've been letting too many movies get to your head

People pay attention to predatory practices of corporations today? I think it's gotten much worse. What do you think facebook et al are if not predatory? They have barcode scanners. Was probably a relatively new upgrade. Up though the 70s, many stores still had cashiers who typed in prices manually. Often from memory for speed. As another mentioned, much of the checkout process hasn't changed other than the addition of self-checkout. And less staff. Back then, it was common for two workers on each lane. One ringing and one bagging. And around that time started the question of Paper or Plastic. Now some stores have switched back to paper while others eliminating bags entirely.
