Francis Buckley is a GRAMMY-winning recording and mixing engineer with a broad range of studio experience with breakout bands, well established chart-toppers, and Hollywood films. Francis started his career working at W.E. Studios in Redondo Beach in 1979. He eventually went on to record and mix Black Flag’s first album, Damaged, while working as chief engineer at Unicorn Records.
In 1981, during his ten-year stand as Director of Recording Services at MCA Music Publishing, he met producer and fellow GRAMMY winner Glen Ballard, with whom he had a fourteen-year partnership. Ballard produced Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill from which "You Oughta Know" comes, and Francis worked with him to mix the album!

I'm almost certain I'll get a lot of hate for this, but I don't think here style has aged that well. That quirk where she lets her voice snap into a hiccup at the end of the line, maybe because it's been copied so much after "pill", comes across as a weird mannerism to me, and the persona behind this song seems pretty vindictive and unpleasant. I mean, songs about rage and rejection are a huge part of torch song and rock history, but this one always gives me the creeps. It's got a "Ima boil your rabbit" character to it.

Just a little correction: the drum loop that Francis is talking about (at 5:32) with the big lawsuit is not this loop but the one used in "You Learn" and, that was not from a Korg keyboard but a Roland Dance expansion card for the Roland JV series. Roland had sampled it from the "Mr. Loverman" song and added it to their card without permission. But again, back then, the sampling laws were kinda blurry.

This line "...great songs already exist, you just become the conduit..." really resonated with me. I can't say that I've ever written a GREAT song, but the songs I'm most proud of have all felt like 'they arrived' -- I didn't create them, I received them.
@digitalbrand5510
@digitalbrand5510 5 жыл бұрын
Chris Greacen gotta agree, so many writers say they dreamt the song or it “wrote itself.” It’s explained differently as a craft to be honed in Nashville when you take a songwriting class, though.
@greacen
@greacen 5 жыл бұрын
@@digitalbrand5510 Ha- I bet that there are a bunch of songwriting schools that push hard on the craft. And to be honest there is something to be said for building discipline in your technique in order to maintain productivity. In my personal experience, I got a LOT of mileage from paying attention to every little idea that arrives and honoring them: get a quick recording, listen to the idea, critique it (what's working, what isn't), then develop it... when I get into the groove and put that into action, I found that more and more often a whole 'fully formed' idea would arrive. It feels like magic and keeps me at it.
