I take you inside an Amish Bent-n-Dent, aka "salvage" store, in Kentucky. Bent-n-dent stores sell discount groceries (usually products that are past their "best by" date or with damaged packaging). In the video I speak with the Amish owner about the store, what he sells, how he gets his products, and how he lights and heats the store. The community here is in Fleming County, KY (Hillsboro area).

I was trying to be slower and steadier with the camera - I think it's better, but this video may still have the too-fast-walkthrough effect for some viewers. After shooting these latest videos, I learned I should get something called a gimbal for better stabilization. Will do that for the next ones I record. Either way, I hope you enjoyed this visit inside a simple, characteristic Amish bent-n-dent grocery store. The older gentleman who owns the place was very friendly and I enjoyed speaking with him. Obviously I kept him out of the footage, which altered a bit how I could film, but he certainly didn't mind sharing about his store. It was a pretty short visit, as he was waiting for a ride to Wal-Mart, as he mentions in the video. You can see the van which came to pick him up in the final outro shot of the farm as I'm driving off. Glad you mentioned the stability because my eyes were crossing watching this. If you could pause for a second or two when you flash past everything no one can focus on anything.

I mostly listened rather than watched because of the dizzying effects of the fast movement. A gimbal would really help steady the camera. I use one that fits my phone and it makes a big difference.

Yea like the Amish I'm lagging behind a bit on the technology :) Someone else told me about the gimbal after I filmed this latest batch, and seems like just the right solution for my next recordings like these 👍

We go to a store like this for all the things we can't grow ourselves. Ours has a giant walk in cooler and big freezer area too and also sells local produce in season.

We have an Amish grocery salvage store in our area of Gallia county, Ohio. I love this store. It has saved me hundreds of dollars on groceries. I pay about a third of what it would cost in a typical grocery store for the same products. The one in my area also sells large boxes of products for anything from $6 to $20 dollars. They also sell many things like Keurig. Aur fryers, toys, trampolines. Bicycles, rugs, cleaning supplies, etc.

I really appreciate how you got the audio normalized so we can hear the shopkeeper very clearly. Great work. Idk if you recorded two audios, one on your cam, and another near the shopkeeper, or if you did post editing to normalize him. Feels like the two different audios, spliced together. Either way, good stuff

Thanks and glad you noticed - I basically did it as simply as I could - it was just one audio from the camera, then I just bumped up the volume on his sections. I thought it might be worth the time in addition to the subtitles, appreciate you letting me know 👍

I love the humor and honesty in this store's name! I knew a "salvage store" in White Plains, NY run by Indian immigrants. There I found DVD's of vintage cartoons for a dollar apiece, and some things I needed in a pinch. The proprietors were such nice people, so I was sad when the store went under.

OMG, we would regularly go to an Amish bent and dent store in the next town over of where I lived in PA as a teen. But this bent and dent store was HUGE, the size of a regular grocery store. Absolutely loved it, my husband and I are going to live full time in a RV and plan on stopping at the same store when we are going through PA.

My MNL is 82 and still dries her clothing, towels, sheets, blankets outside and the fresh, clean smell of them are incredible.🤗 She only cans peaches now. There are amazing. 💕

There is a fantastic Amish market near Princeton NJ - all sorts of fresh meats, fresh baked goods, freshly cooked foods, cheeses, produce, an amazing deli, pickles, jams, and some wooden furniture. And then to see factory made chewy granola bars in an Amish store seems very wrong.

Great video ! Our local Amish "Dented Can Store" has regular wall windows and then some skylights in the ceiling helps a little bit more with the light at the end of the day .. video quality was just fine especially if your used to going in any Amish stores powered by good ole mother nature..lol

Our Amish store does the same thing just windows and ceiling windows. I was in on a rainy day and had to use my cell phone for a light. It was so super dark. Looks just like that place though. Tons of old unmatched China.

This reminds me of “Mr. C’s” where I lived growing up. Outdated cereal for a buck if that, expired seasonings for a quarter. We loved it!

There's a huge Amish "bent & dent" grocery/bakery just south of Munfordville, KY. Always full of "English" shoppers. The bakery goods can't be beat. The Amish ladies that work there aren't overly friendly though. Don't know if it's to keep a distance from the English or maybe because most of the Amish are originally from the north. They may now live in Kentucky, but they haven't yet learned the ways of southern hospitality.

There are several in that large community, if you google Amish bent and dent Holmes County and check the Google map view, but here's one I'm pretty sure I've been in once or twice, it's technically in next-door Wayne County, same community though: Country View Bent-N-Dent 4097 S Kansas Rd, Apple Creek, OH 44606

Yes that's generally how I go about it, actually some people don't mind being in the shot especially if they are not posing and smiling for the camera (considered prideful), and when the topic is about something practical like their business. Another question or topic to do a video on. Do they have china dishes? Many patterns were made in Germany and Bavaria. Do they ever go to the English Flea Markets or Antique Stores? Do they collect any glass? A lot of old glass was made in the Amish States of Pa. Ohio Indiana West Virginia. Do they buy any antique kerosene lamps at the English Antique Stores? Do they like to use pretty china dishes for their table? There was a huge Amish Store in Ohio can’t remember the name lots of kitchen items old fashioned cast iron pots etc. Hopefully you might know what Iam talking about. Wish you could go there!

They do have china dishes - I think I touch on this in the "5 Surprising Things in Amish Homes" video. Decorative china is fairly common for the Amish but not used too often. I think I've eaten just once or twice off of it in Amish homes, for special occasions. I wouldn't say they are collectors unless it's something that also has a useful purpose. So they might "collect" something like a dish but not say glass decorative figurines (though there are exceptions). Generally they get their kerosene lamps new from Amish and other supply stores, I don't know of a lot of them going to traditional antique stores but it's possible.

Love these independent "odd lot" stores, wish there were more in my area ~ most open & close in the same year, it seems. A shame because you really can save a bundle on certain staples & necessities. Got hooked on these retailers back in the 1980s when they began to surface everywhere. But now they're more mainstream-commercial than bargain basement. Big Lots should change their name to Spend Lots, lol ;)

@@AmishAmerica If I remember right, the original owner moved to Missouri. He felt like there was too much English influence on his children. I think his wife was from Missouri. I believe his father bought it, but he wasn't able to keep it going. Now it's building supplies. I talked to the original owner many times, even at his house once to meet his family. They were nice folks. I could only wish them well on there decision to move.

They have these shops in Japan called dirty dish shops. you can buy mismatched china, little plates and bowels and everything is just stacked gathering dust but otherwise they are in perfect condition.

I bought one for my son six years ago from Lehman's in Ohio. It is run by the Heat from the woodstore. It works well at moving the hot air around a 20' x 20' or large room. Requires no fuel or electric power.

While there are stirling engine wood stove fans this one appears to be a dc electric motor powered by a thermoelectric module. Also known as a Peltier module. I’ve also heard them called Seabeck devices.

Do you know of any Amish boot makers? I'm looking for all leather tall boots that go over the calf but pants can be tucked into. A tall work boot. I cannot find any mainstream boot manufacturers that make them any longer in the US. Thanks!!

Just curious what order of Amish are they? The blue milk paint door s reminds of Troyer Amish , but they dont usually allow pressurized lamps

These people are from the group known as the Buchanan County (Iowa) affiliation. It's a community based near Hazleton which for a long time was considered one of the plainer ones, but have apparently permitted more technological changes over the years. Their buggies for instance struck me as sth like Swartzentruber buggies when parked, b/c they don't seem to display a triangle when parked, but they do stick one on the side of the buggy when traveling (some of the Nebraska Amish do this as well).

I live in Lancaster County PA. This type of store is prolific in this area. We’ve got one locally, that sells only organic produce and other products, all either expired or close to it. Lots of frozen vacuum packed meats, canned goods,etc. Most of them are Mennonite or Brethren, not Amish. BTW You really sound Philly to me. ❤️

@@AmishAmerica The only BB’s we have here in Lancaster County is in Quarryville, which is 40 minutes south of where I live. The other BB’s locations are 30-60 minutes away in Berks, Lebanon, Cumberland and Chester Counties. Haven’t been in a while, because we have a lot of salvage stores within a few miles of my home. I feel fortunate to have so many discounted grocery outlets available. They’ve been especially great since inflation has affected grocery and gas prices. I’m enjoying your channel. Looking forward to learning more about other areas of the country where Amish folk reside, worship and conduct business!

I was wondering if you could speak on Amish/Mennonite and photography. I have some very old photos (1890s) with the women who all have very distinctive dresses on, almost like a V-shaped apron. I know that the Amish don't like having their photo taken but I have no idea how it was viewed back in the 1890s.

@@AmishAmerica Actually the dry goods business wasn't the one the Millers switched with. It was the department store in the teeny tiny town of Tilton. Its owed and ran by Mrs. Emma. (Super sweet) her daughter schooled a couple of my children.

Gotcha - Tilton! Yes so the one I meant was the current variety store in Tilton, Shetler's I believe, the lady running it gave me directions to Miller's and told me about the switch, but maybe I'm misunderstanding or there was a third business involved

Do Amish farms have any roadside sales of produce or a fruit market or a farmers market? Do Amish farms use the nasty pesticides that the English farms use and fertilizer s or GMO seeds and chemicals? I buy organic I was wondering if any Amish try to grow organically? Thanks! I actually have recorded a video on the "are Amish organic" topic that I still have to produce. But in a nutshell, organic has grown in popularity among Amish in recent years and you can find both individual farmers and co-ops providing organic produce, milk, cheese and so on. However the bulk of the Amish are still conventional farmers. If you're buying, I would just ask or note any language in their signs or materials that say it's organic. The majority of Amish here in Pennsylvania are NOT organic farmers. They rely heavily on herbicides, such as Roundup, to “burnout” fields of weeds, as they primarily practice no-till farming. They’re also use GMO seeds for such things as corn, beans, alfalfa and oats. They do this to produce higher yield and to avoid the use of pesticides. As was mentioned, there are some smaller farms that have joined organic CSA co-ops, as they can then command higher prices for the crops they raise on lower acreage. To answer the question of roadside produce stands and farmers markets, they’re literally everywhere in PA Amish country. I rarely, if ever, see the words “organic” listed on signs at these stands/markets. You want organic Amish-grown produce, meats, etc. in PA, your best bet is to join a co-op.

@@AmishAmerica Thanks for your reply. It looks like a wonderful co op of organic farmers. I am looking for one such as that in Ohio. There was also a huge Amish store in Ohio that had kitchen goods any sort of interesting gadgets etc that doesn’t depend on electricity. They also sold cast iron pots etc. People traveled from afar to go there. I forgot the name darn it, but it was really nice on the inside I saw some homesteaders do a video on it once. Just thought you might want to do a video there. You might be able to find the place.I bought my 2 collies from the Amish. They showed me all their animals, very interested in us and very kind and genuine. He was a wonderful conversationist. Another question I have…. Do the Amish take vaccines? Are they imposed upon them? I hope not. I hope they will always and forever be able to keep their independence from a secular totalitarian government. The answer to this question might depend upon which state they’re in. Keep up your great work I’ll keep watching and clicking the like button!

@@pyewacket60 I hope they learn and realize the GMO seeds are terribly unhealthy causing sickness in people overtime. The government and Monsanto control over our food has produced a sick society. I was hoping more Amish could avoid the various Cancers by segregating themselves and avoiding toxic substances herbicides and vaccines.

@@prettylady995 Actually, the Amish as a cohort have a cancer rate far below the national average. They tend to be very active due in part to a lifestyle that requires daily physical labor. The Amish are expected to abstain from drugs, alcohol and tobacco, which contribute to many of the cancers prevalent in US society today, and eat a widely diverse diet that incudes lots of fresh vegetables and fruits.

Sounds like that is where this particular church chose to draw the line on batteries. Other churches wouldn't have an issue with rechargeable. It may simply be that they permit batteries, but restrict it to the simpler disposeable variety perhaps simply seeing rechargeable as the more advanced tech. Come back in 10 years and they might be all OK with rechargeable 🙂Change happens even among the Amish, just more slowly

They don't have a TV they didn't know it showed up. And since they are not obese with diabetes by the age of 35. It didn't really affect them

@@peterjones3226 Here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, In the spring of 2020, a COVID-19 wave tore through the Plain community when they resumed church services, infecting an untold number of Amish and Mennonites in Lancaster County. It’s estimated that 90% of Amish households here were affected by COVID-19. They don’t believe in vaccinations of any kind, nor do they wear masks or practice social distancing.

I went to one of these stores many years ago, back in the days when I was using EBT (SNAP). I got some very nice things, but when I finished checking out and started to pay, I was cut off by the cashier, and I was told very harshly that the store "does not take EBT, and get out." I was so humiliated and embarrassed I went to my vehicle and cried. I will never go to one of these again. To this day I can still feel the pain from that judgment.

That was kinda stupid to just assume that Amish people take EBT cards. A lot of Amish stores don't even take credit cards. They only take cash or checks. I think you should've asked before getting to the checkout. Also, did they actually tell you "to get out"? Most Amish people aren't that rude.

@@patrapper7367 , I use EBT/SNAP and I'd never be stupid enough to just assume every store takes them. I always ask if there is no sign that tells you they take them. I even ask them about checks or credit cards because why would you just assume everyone takes them? Again, I very much doubt that the Amish people would tell anyone "to get out"! The person is clearly just being dramatic.

Karen, I'm sorry that happened to you. Things like that are hurtful and uncalled for. Just like its uncalled for to be called stupid or dramatic because you don't know something. Also, there are people in every situation who are butts so realize you did nothing wrong but the cashier did.

Karen, I'm sooo sorry you carry that memory. I have been in similar situations, and the sense of humiliation is so deep! I won't forget! But...you did nothing wrong, and regardless of what some are saying, we don't always think to ask. There are rude people in every group. I would give the Amish stores another chance. God bless you! Their prices are less than half which means they get it for practically nothing. They have the higher-margin. Th ey don't have an electric bill. The store is heated with a wood stove in most cases

@@peterjones3226 I guess you never shop in small grocery stores, so you don’t know the price of item. The big groceries often have advantages to negotiate the price with suppliers because they buy in big quantities.

The other big thing is proximity - Wal-Mart is often only reachable by hiring a non-Amish driver for a special trip every couple weeks or month. The Amish stores are in the community and reachable by buggy, scooter, on foot.
