The Amish are exploited by Marxists as an example of socialism. However, the Amish are the antithesis of leftism. Each family is an independent self determining unit, and communities are run democratically, not by some ideological a-holes who want you to give them all your money because they know how to spend it fairer.

@@chrisallum9044 would you prefer the communal hierarchy within Papua New Guinea or Australian Aboriginal tribes, as supportive of socialism? Either of which is not socialism at all. If it was, then neighboring tribes would have seen the benefits of ever large cooperative groups.....but they didn't. They continued to war with each other. Socialism's failure is due to homo sapien sapien's inability to care equally for individuals within groups larger than 30-50, as smaller. And we see that in advanced economies. The larger the group of people govt is responsible for, the less efficient govt is at measuring relative need.

Community economics is the bread and butter of creating wealth among the entire populace. Not necessarily riches, just wealth. This is why people typically pay less for housing in housing coops, get more financial services for less with credit unions, and entire communities working as an economic unit can create wealth from small inputs, such as "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When workers shop local, those business owners spend their money locally, and a self reinforcing cycle continues. Much of America's wealth is being drained into the Hamptons by companies like Walmart, Amazon, Dollar General, etc. This isn't to say that the money can't flow there eventually, it's just that it is not getting time to circulate before ending up there, like an area that receives plenty of rainfall but does not capture it and let it soak in the soil, so the plants remain starved of water despite getting what should be adequate rainfall.

It's more than just "hard work" and "valuing people." The Amish do not abuse credit. They believe in saving until they have enough cash to move forward. Amish people don't cook with ingredients of any higher quality than anyone else as a rule. They shop in bulk at Aldi near me for sugar and flour and eggs and that's what they're baking with. The same stuff you are. Some also smoke heavily and don't take care of their teeth. Some look for any way they can to get around their religious restrictions just like other orthodox groups tend to do. Some are also known to treat their livestock horribly . Seriously, anyone who "loves the Amish lifestyle" is thinking of an idealized version of reality. They're just people. They're no purer or better or harder working than any other group in general. If they didn't have such "quaint" clothing and horse drawn buggies, you'd think of them differently. You'd see they're people plain and simple some of whom are kind and some are not. Ego sum homo vepsertilionem--I have family members who own a chain of restaurants in Lancaster County. Most of their vegetables, eggs, milk, etc. came from Amish farms. I spent a summer working with my family between college years and going to the farms to pick up items the restaurant needed. The Amish I met were kind, hard-working, dedicated to high quality produce and dairy products, loving parents, and intensely curious about why a 21 year old wasn't married with a family and was still in school. In the mid-20th century, the PA Amish won a suit brought by the Commonwealth to require their children to stay in school until age 16. The Amish contended that their children didn't need more than an 8th grade education to run their farms and "cottage" businesses. Today, it is much more common to see Amish girls and boys in high school than it was back then.

non gmo. potatoes are gmo. corn is gmo. bananas extreme gmo strawberries gmo these are all gmo. we started selective breeding things before we even knew about genetics. EVERYTHING is GMO. gmo≠bad. usually just for the bit larger, the tastier, ones with more offspring, ones that grow in that season, that grow in that other season. etc. we started with it so long ago. it isn't unhealthy but with patotoes and bananas especially, since they are all mostly clones of each other, they are vulnerable. because one disease can while them all out. bananas are going extinct. the ones as you know them at least.
@pretacwitter50557 жыл бұрын
Editing this, was to long. Selective breeding to take seeds out of bananas, etc... Fine. Making corn produce it's own insecticide. Making cabbage produce some sort of scorpion venom... Making a banana that has a built in vaccine... How do you selectively breed a scorpion with a cabbage, or corn with bt-toxin??? Those don't sound so great to me.

Pretac Witter They genetically modify them in labs. Inserting characteristics of other fruits/veggies to change their resistance to disease and insects. Nevermind it alters the nutritional value, increases the fruictose (sugar) and then they splice in the Chemicals to ward off insects. Insects pollinate and allow it to grow. The chemicals Kill the insects. That means Natural pollination can't be done. The chemicals that erradicate weeds (unwanted vegetation) also kill the microbes and insects/worms that keep soil healthy and feed the plants. MONSANTO IS CAUSING FOOD SHORTAGES AS A RESULT OF THEIR MEDDELING. They also got laws passed that makes it illegal to grow any seed that hasn't been so treated and if wind pollinates a farmers NON-GMO crops he can be sued or fined for "mislabeling" crops since they are No Longer "pure". Roundup poisons the soil which means you have to use chemical fertilizers. Then the soil is depleted of nutruients. IT's VICIOUS what they've done for GREED.
@pretacwitter50557 жыл бұрын
@The Uncannie1 Oh I know... I was kind of joking around about breeding insects with vegetables to make a point that it isn't natural. Once they start fooling around in the lab to modify/mix/combine I get very suspicious of that. I don't think they know the long term effects of what they are doing... Well they probably do know actually. Now if you have a bunch of strawberry plants and selectively save the seeds from the plants that only produce larger strawberries or whatever trait you want and keep working towards that slowly over the years I'm ok with that.
@niller3437 жыл бұрын
I mean I definitely agree that there needs to be some kind of state control and ethical control with GMO - but GMO is basically used in SO MANY life saving situations. Growing insulin is GMO. Domestication, as you're talking about, is not. While I am no scientist, I certainly do think that (controlled) GMOs will save humanity. We are facing a HUGE food crisis right now alongside enviromental crisis such as mass droughts. With domestication and selective breeding, you're not guaranteed plants with higher yields or a smaller water need. If you use GMO methods you're basically CERTAIN that your desired outcome will also be what your plants will produce. And yes there are certainly fears such as "are we exterminating bees?" or "are we poisoning ourselves?" and the answers are basically no. 1) we have full control over GMO which means that we can be certain there are no carcinogens in our food and 2) the poisons that have been tried and seen as succesful as insecticides are completely harmless to any kind of human - think like alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, nicotine etc. etc. According to my research, the tried out insecticide was actually tailored to the body of the certain kind of pest that was destroying crops - which means even if a person was the same size as the insect, we wouldn't feel the poison since it would go straight through us. So it's good to have some healthy scepticism but GMOs have been tested for many many many years and the results are that there are no short-term or long-term effects of it.
