It is incredible that it came to a point where they were about to destroit it long before it ever was shown to the public. Thankfully it didnt happen and we can get the idea of how a produced e31 m8 would have been.

In 1991 the top 14 BMW mechanics were awarded a trip to Germany as the winners,i believe this is the car we saw running on the test track outside of Munich,we were told it was a 12 cylinder developmental engine,it sounded amazing at full song,i shall never forget it,what a trip!

The old generation of BMW engineers and management were people who were not interested in money, but in technology and engineering. Less budget, more creativity, milestones had to be created. It was about revolutionizing the motorsport world. Clear thoughts had to be made about the love of the car. It's different today. Today's generation focuses on maximizing profits.

@@ElectronicHouseFlash Yes, and they’re now one of these “woke” companies that are being forced into (or embracing) the carbon-cap-trade and tax system. Thanks UN, WEF, EU, USA - the whole crew. They want us in micro, or electric cars, while they continue being chauffeured around in limos and private jets.

Being an owner of E31 and an old fan of this model I must admit, only now I've realised M8 prototype has no pop-up headlights! :-O

That's because it needed the space of heavy pop-up lights for air-filters & electronic valves & pipes.. this prototype ditched many other heavy comfort things in it's way for ultimate lighting performance they replaced glass with lexan plastic, dash has way less things, they installed only 2 racing carbon seats and i read somewhere that entire body panels are made from carbon-kevlar not aluminum or steel.. they did try to do carbon-kevlar rims but eventually they just wrapped the inner spokes in carbon.. that engine is an epic masterpiece..

@@einautofan6685 Yes definitely the 3.0 CSL homage! I wish they would have ditched the ugly 4 series altogether and built the homage instead as its own high performance competitor to the 911 etc...

As an owner of an E38 750iL and having driven my friends E31 850i hearing more about the engine and hearing the exhaust note has been a dream of mine. Please share even more details about the engine.

I was lucky enough to experience this car in Monterey California when it came for the Legends of the Autobahn show several years ago. I owned an 850 at the time and it was very cool to be able to check this one out in person. I can confirm it ran and drove at that time (i even posted a video of it)

Saw a couple of 850s back in the day, but didn't know there was also an M8! Thanks guys for this presentation. Those naturally aspirated engines are something else, still.

A true classic that will never die. Compared to great-grandpa, the great grandson ( latest M8) looks like he tried to imitate Bernini and Michelangelo after too much coke (not Cola). I can definitely see one of my fictional characters driving this or the 850 CSI. This definitely needs to be in its own movie.

Even after 30 years, it looks amazing! Do we know why it was not turned into a production car (the article says "fate"...)? How close is the McLaren F1 engine to this M8 engine?

Economic downturn the 90s and E31 sales were lagging, so BMW figured it wasn't going to succeed financially. McLaren F1 S70/2 isn't related to this engine, but is based on the S50 (in turn, the M50) whereas the S70/1 was based on the M20.

I can remember seeing a Series 8 about 30 years ago. A simply stunning dark blue V12 model that both my uncle (RIP) and myself drooled over as we chatted to its owner who had stunningly gorgeous girlfriend/wife whom, to be honest, we barely noticed 8-))... C'est la vie ;-))...

Was ein mega Auto ! Den normalen 850 Kenne ich echt gut aber das ist mit dem hier ja kaum zu verglichen. Die Videos könnten echt 20-30 Minuten Lang sein aber ich bin schon glücklich genug, dass das Auto nach all den Jahren endlich an die Öffentlichkeit gelangt.

Nice and very legendary car. The final alternative was then built by Alpina (B12 5.7 Coupé). Also equiped with a V12 but less output of power. Until today the B12 5.7 Coupé is a true dreamcar for us.

In fact with 640 bhp it would crash almost anything but F40 and some fastest supercars like Diablo - this two also have almost 500 bhp. They say it could acceleration was up to 4 second dead to 60 mph, and top speed close to 200 mph. Even if they decide to put M8 in small production (50-100 cars) back in 1990 with some more equipment, and not that radical for road safety and regulation today this car will be up from 800k to 1 milion euros, and was a best of M-cars ever built, better than M6 E24 / M5 E28 or M3 E30. The 380 bhp 850 CSi will be good prelude as the 635 CSi was for 286 bhp M6.

Magnificent, truly incredible. But the 850csi, is an M by all means. The VIN is WBS and not WBA, so this make it an M, as it was built by Motorsport back then...And the engine plaque is there to prove it. Great channel, huge potentials Guys! Well done!

2:09 Modern bmw engines (from n52 above) do not need a throttle body to accelerate, they only used vanos and valvetronic, the throttle body is only for emergency cases

Super Videos! Die einzige Kritik die ich habe ist, dass die Videos zu kurz sind. Ich würde mir viel mehr Tiefe und mehr Informationen wünschen. Und die Musik könnte auch leiser oder ganz weg, so wirkt alles so stressig und irgendwie überhaupt nicht entspannt. Aber gerne mehr Videos von BMWs an die man nicht wirklich rankommt :)

One of the most epic video I have ever seen in my all life.. Just have some dubts about some datas on linked story on BMW M official website.. -this is not S70/2 but very first S70 engine, S70/1 -640hp sounds impossible with that kind of intake as Mclaren's S70/2 has exactly same torque at same revs (650nm@5600rpm) same comp ratio (11:1) how can you reach 23hp more at same rpm (7500)? Also F1's intake is visibly voted for high revs power instead of M8's plenum sure better for torque..Mclaren also has 24 injectors(!!) i wonder if this has too.. In fact on web you find less optimistic values like 550-560hp(still amazing for the time..) -On video you can clearly see APracing front calipers, i'm pretty sure that are 4 pots but on technical data you read 1 piston fist-type on front brakes.. I'll try to contact M division, I would be happy if they check this
